Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the relationship between race/ethnicity and body image in a low socioeconomic group of urban adolescent boys and girls. To date, most studies on body image have studied higher SES Caucasian women and adolescent girls. Although more literature has begun to examine race/ethnicity as a factor in body image satisfaction, few have focused specifically on the impact of race/ethnicity in a low-income urban population. This study is part of a larger longitudinal study designed to examine the relationship between stress and depression in urban adolescents. The data used for this dissertation was archival and was collected during the first year of the Stress and Coping project. Data was drawn from five socio-economically disadvantaged schools in the inner city of Chicago. Measures such as the Youth Self Report (YSR) Anxious, Depressed subtest, and the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were used to assess clinical depressive symptoms and body image concerns. The participants were selected from Chicago public schools that have seventy-five percent or more students from low income families. A total of 454 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders participated in this study. Because there was a disproportionate amount of African-Americans in this sample, 150 African-Americans were randomly drawn from the sample and compared to 115 Asian-Americans, 141 Hispanics, and 48 Caucasians. Thus the sample was reduced and N = 454. A 2 x 4 {gender x race) factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to measure whether race/ethnicity in combination with gender and body image impact depression in adolescents. Results revealed a significant main effect for gender and for race. Results illustrated that females in this sample reported higher body image dissatisfaction and higher depressive symptoms compared to males. Results revealed that race/ethnicity is related to body image dissatisfaction but the combination of race/ethnicity and gender does not impact depressive symptoms. Thus this study finds that a relationship exists between race/ethnicity gender and body image dissatisfaction but there is not a relationship between race/ethnicity and depression in adolescents

Book excerpt: "Body Image: Psychological Predictors, Social Influences and Gender Differences opens with a presentation of results of a study on sport-active and sport-inactive adolescents, their perception of body image and their associated eating habits and sport participation motives. Following this, the authors examined the association between feminist beliefs, empowerment, and positive body image through an online sample of 302 British women. Additionally, the authors examine adolescent boys' body image and its relationship to their subjective well-being, as well as the effect of the parent-adolescent relationship on body image and their subjective well-being. The penultimate chapter discusses research findings regarding body image issues in men of color. Risk factors associated with body dissatisfaction in men of color are explored, including a discussion of cultural and race-related factors that may impact the development of body image issues. The "allocentric lock" model of eating disorders is explored in the concluding chapter, providing a rich conceptual framework for elucidating the source of body image disturbance and factors causing patients with eating disorders to be locked in a body that they detest"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between self-esteem and body image has been well-established such that low levels of self-esteem have been found to be associated with body image concerns. The authors review previous research on the link between low self-esteem and body image concerns and then discuss more recent research concerning the importance of contingent self-esteem in this connection. The next chapter provides a discussion on the commonness of body dissatisfaction among contemporary Western young women and suggests re-embodiment as a means of transforming this experience. Chapter 3 explores the relationship between appearance satisfaction emotional overeating, experiences of racism and BMI among Black and African American women. Ethnic identity plays an important role in the self-concept related to feelings and attitudes. Chapter 4 explores the ethnic differences in self-esteem and body image among adolescents, as well as the need to address ethnicity in prevention programs. The remaining chapters of the book focus on body image in adolescent pregnancy; magazine image influence, extraversion and body image in college males; sociocultural factors, body image factors and self-esteem on school-age males and females, the perception of self-image in older people and how it changes throughout life; an examination of how the way woman perceive themselves influences the psychosexual impact on quality of life; and finally, how people can improve or develop a healthier investment in appearance.

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book excerpt: This core textbook provides students with comprehensive coverage of African American psychology as a field. Each chapter integrates African and American influences on the psychology of African Americans, thereby illustrating how contemporary values, beliefs, and behaviors are derived from African culture translated by the cultural socialization experiences of African Americans in this country. The literature and research are referenced and discussed from the perspective of African culture (mostly West African) during the period of enslavement, at other critical periods in this country (e.g., early 20th century, civil rights era), and through the present. Chapters provide a review of the research literature, with a focus on applications for contemporary living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book equips readers with the knowledge required to improve diagnosis and treatment and to implement integrated prevention programs in patients with eating and weight disorders. It does so by providing a comprehensive, up-to-date review of research findings and theoretical assumptions concerning the interface and interactions between body image and such disorders as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, other specified feeding and eating disorders, orthorexia nervosa, overweight, and obesity. After consideration of issues of definition and classification, the opening part of the book examines the concept of body image from a variety of viewpoints. A series of chapters are then devoted to the assessment of the multidimensional construct “body image”, to dysmorphophobia/body dysmorphic disorder, and to muscle dysmorphia. The third part discusses body image in people suffering from different eating disorders and/or overweight or obesity, and two final chapters focus on body image in the integrated prevention of eating disorders and obesity, and cultural differences regarding body image. The book will be of interest to all health professionals who work in the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, eating disorders, obesity, body image, adolescence, public health, and prevention.
