Book excerpt: This volume comprises the second part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023. The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. The first volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. This volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.

Book excerpt: A class of finite element methods, the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods (DGM), has been under rapid development recently and has found its use very quickly in such diverse applications as aeroacoustics, semi-conductor device simula tion, turbomachinery, turbulent flows, materials processing, MHD and plasma simulations, and image processing. While there has been a lot of interest from mathematicians, physicists and engineers in DGM, only scattered information is available and there has been no prior effort in organizing and publishing the existing volume of knowledge on this subject. In May 24-26, 1999 we organized in Newport (Rhode Island, USA), the first international symposium on DGM with equal emphasis on the theory, numerical implementation, and applications. Eighteen invited speakers, lead ers in the field, and thirty-two contributors presented various aspects and addressed open issues on DGM. In this volume we include forty-nine papers presented in the Symposium as well as a survey paper written by the organiz ers. All papers were peer-reviewed. A summary of these papers is included in the survey paper, which also provides a historical perspective of the evolution of DGM and its relation to other numerical methods. We hope this volume will become a major reference in this topic. It is intended for students and researchers who work in theory and application of numerical solution of convection dominated partial differential equations. The papers were written with the assumption that the reader has some knowledge of classical finite elements and finite volume methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a new numerical technique: the eXtended Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) Method, to efficiently solve problems including moving boundaries and interfaces. It aims to outperform available methods and improve the results by inheriting favored properties of Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) together with an explicit interface definition. X-HDG combines the Hybridizable HDG method with an eXtended Finite Element (X-FEM) philosophy, with a level set description of the interface, to form an hp convergent, high order unfitted numerical method. HDG outperforms other Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for problems involving self-adjoint operators, due to its hybridization and superconvergence properties. The hybridization process drastically reduces the number of degrees of freedom in the discrete problem, similarly to static condensation in the context of high-order Continuous Galerkin (CG). On other hand, HDG is based on a mixed formulation that, differently to CG or other DG methods, is stable even when all variables (primal unknowns and derivatives) are approximated with polynomials of the same degree k. As a result, convergence of order k+1 in the L2 norm is proved not only for the primal unknown, but also for its derivatives. Therefore, a simple element-by-element postprocess of the derivatives leads to a superconvergent approximation of the primal variables, with convergence of order k+2 in the L2 norm. X-HDG inherits these favored properties of HDG in front of CG and DG methods; moreover, thanks to the level set description of interfaces, costly remeshing is avoided when dealing with moving interfaces. This work demonstrates that X-HDG keeps the optimal and superconvergence of HDG with no need of mesh fitting to the interface. In Chapters 2 and 3, the X-HDG method is derived and implemented to solve the steady-state Laplace equation on a domain where the interface separates a single material from the void and where the interface separates two different materials. The accuracy and the convergence of X-HDG is tested over examples with manufactured solutions and it is shown that X-HDG outperforms the previous proposals by demonstrating high order optimum and super convergence, together with reduced system size thanks to its hybrid nature, without mesh fitting. In Chapters 4 and 5, the X-HDG method is derived and implemented to solve Stokes interface problem for void and bimaterial interfaces. With X-HDG, high order convergence is demonstrated over unfitted meshes for incompressible flow problems. X-HDG for moving interfaces is studied in Chapter 6. A transient Laplace problem is considered, where the time dependent term is discretized using the backward Euler method. A collapsing circle example together with two-phase Stefan problem are analyzed in numerical examples section. It is demonstrated that X-HDG offers high-order optimal convergence for time-dependent problems. Moreover, with Stefan problem, using a polynomial degree k, a more accurate approximation of interface position is demonstrated against X-FEM, thanks to k+1 convergent gradient approximation of X-HDG. Yet again, results obtained by previous proposals are improved.

Book excerpt: Computational simulations contain discretizations of both a physical domain and a mathematical model. In this dissertation, an overset mesh framework is used to discretize the physical domain, and the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element method is used to discretize the mathematical model. It is proposed that using an overset mesh framework for the HDG method enables stable solutions to be computed for complex geometries and dynamic meshes. Overset mesh methods are chosen because they are efficient at decomposing geometrically complex domains. The HDG method was chosen because it provides solutions that are arbitrarily high-order accurate, reduces the size of the global discrete problem, and has the ability to solve elliptic, parabolic, and/or hyperbolic problems with a unified form of discretization. An overset mesh method can utilize an inherent property of the HDG method, the decomposition of the solution into global (face) and local (volume) parts. The global solution exists only on the cell boundaries; while, the local solution exists in the interior of each cell and is decoupled between neighboring cells. This decomposition introduces face-volume coupling in the weak form for degrees of freedom on cell boundaries, which is used as the foundation for the overset communication between subdomains.Ultimately, the goal of this work is to simulate full-scale hydrodynamic and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. To achieve these simulations, the necessary building blocks must first be verified and validated in the overset-HDG framework. The building blocks demonstrated in this dissertation are steady convection-diffusion, linear elasticostatics, and pseudo-compressible Navier-Stokes in both Eulerian and arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian frames. Computational simulations are performed to demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of the overset-HDG algorithm.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents numerical methods for solving transient wave equations (i.e. in time domain). More precisely, it provides an overview of continuous and discontinuous finite element methods for these equations, including their implementation in physical models, an extensive description of 2D and 3D elements with different shapes, such as prisms or pyramids, an analysis of the accuracy of the methods and the study of the Maxwell’s system and the important problem of its spurious free approximations. After recalling the classical models, i.e. acoustics, linear elastodynamics and electromagnetism and their variational formulations, the authors present a wide variety of finite elements of different shapes useful for the numerical resolution of wave equations. Then, they focus on the construction of efficient continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods and study their accuracy by plane wave techniques and a priori error estimates. A chapter is devoted to the Maxwell’s system and the important problem of its spurious-free approximations. Treatment of unbounded domains by Absorbing Boundary Conditions (ABC) and Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) is described and analyzed in a separate chapter. The two last chapters deal with time approximation including local time-stepping and with the study of some complex models, i.e. acoustics in flow, gravity waves and vibrating thin plates. Throughout, emphasis is put on the accuracy and computational efficiency of the methods, with attention brought to their practical aspects. This monograph also covers in details the theoretical foundations and numerical analysis of these methods. As a result, this monograph will be of interest to practitioners, researchers, engineers and graduate students involved in the numerical simulationof waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that the accuracy and efficiency of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations is heavily influenced by the quality of the mesh upon which the solution is computed. Unfortunately, the computational tools available for assessing mesh quality remain rather limited. This report describes a methodology for rigorously investigating the interaction between a flow solver and a variety of mesh configurations for the purposes of deducing which mesh properties produce the best results from the solver. The techniques described herein permit a more detailed exploration of what constitutes a quality mesh in the context of a given solver and a desired flow regime. In the present work, these newly developed tools are used to investigate mesh quality as it pertains to a high-order accurate discontinuous Galerkin solver when it is used to compute inviscid and high-Reynolds number flows in domains possessing smoothly curving boundaries. For this purpose, two flow models have been generated and used to conduct parametric studies of mesh configurations involving curved elements. The results of these studies allow us to make some observations regarding mesh quality when using the discontinuous Galerkin method to solve these types of problems. Briefly, we have found that for inviscid problems, the mesh elements used to resolve curved boundaries should be at least third order accurate. For viscous problems, the domain boundaries must be approximated by mesh elements that are of the same order as the polynomial approximation of the solution if the theoretical order of accuracy of the scheme is to be maintained. Increasing the accuracy of the boundary elements to at least one order higher than the solution approximation typically results in a noticeable improvement in the computed error norms. It is also noted that C1-continuity of the mesh is not required at element interfaces along the boundary.

The last decade has seen a renewed interest in mesh generation and adaptation by the computational engineering community, due to the challenges introduced by complex industrial problems.Another common challenge is the need to handle complex geometries. Nowadays, it is becoming obvious that geometry should be persistent throughout the whole simulation process. Several methodologies that can carry the geometric information throughout the simulation stage are available, but due to the novelty of these methods, the generation of suitable meshes for these techniques is still the main obstacle for the industrial uptake of this technology. This book will cover different aspects of mesh generation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on cutting-edge mesh generation techniques for advanced discretisation methods and complex geometries.

This science brings forward unique challenges, many of which are, at the moment, beyond the theoretical techniques available. Developmental biology, due to its complexity, has lagged somewhat behind its sister disciplines (such as molecular biology and population biology) in making use of quantitative modeling to further biological understanding. This volume comprises work that is among the best developmental modeling available and we feel it will do much to remedy this situation. This book is aimed at all those with an interest in the interdisciplinary field of computer and mathematical modeling of multi-cellular and developmental systems. It is also a goal of the Editors to attract more developmental biologists to consider integrating modeling components into their research. Most importantly, this book is intended to serve as a portal into this research area for younger scientists – especially graduate students and post-docs, from both biological and quantitative backgrounds.* Articles written by leading exponents in the field* Provides techniques to address multiscale modeling* Coverage includes a wide spectrum of modeling approaches* Includes descriptions of the most recent advances in the field
