Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hip-hop icon Chuck D presents a gorgeously illustrated Pilates exercise program for people of all ages, including the over-forty crowd LEGENDARY HIP-HOP ARTIST CHUCK D has been touring the world for four decades, since his band Public Enemy put out their first album in 1987. Now, at age sixty-three, Chuck is frequently asked how he still manages to put on such high-energy performances so many years later. His response is simple: he practices Pilates, a form of exercise and body conditioning that has become increasingly popular over the last decade. Chuck’s appreciation for Pilates took a major leap in 2016 when he was setting out on a rigorous tour schedule with a powerful and energetic new band called Prophets of Rage (a supergroup including members of Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine). Over the next four years, the group would perform to more than two million people across the globe. As Chuck admits, he simply could not have delivered on such a massive level without his practice of Pilates. In this volume, Chuck and his Pilates guru, Kathy Lopez, present the “RAPilates” program of more than thirty mat-based exercises for people of all ages and experiences. The exercises are beautifully illustrated in the inimitable style that Chuck has demonstrated in his previous books of visual art, including STEWdio and Summer of Hamn. Like those two books, RAPilates is published on Chuck’s Enemy Books imprint, which is hosted by Akashic Books.

Book excerpt: My story is a familiar one. I was a high school athlete, but sometime during my adult life I started to decline physically. It started with hypothyroidism, allergies and depression in my 20s and 30s. By my 40s, my allergies progressed to asthma. I frequently got colds, had trouble sleeping and gained 15 pounds I couldn't get rid of. Quite frankly, I felt like my body was falling into a downward spiral that I feared would end badly. Experts told me what to eat and how to exercise, but no matter what I did, my body seemed to break down more. That's when I set out to find new ways to improve my health. I took classes, studied my own body, and experimented with elimination diets and exercise. Eventually, I recognized the subtle ways my body was telling me what it needed that I was ignoring. The smarter and more diligent I became about responding to my body's cues, the better the results...the bigger the transformation. Now in my 50s, I'm in the best health and shape of my life! Family and friends who hadn't seen me in a while immediately noticed a difference and wanted to know what I was doing. That's when I formalized my method which I call Integrative Body Conditioning...with an emphasis of finding what works for you! This book is presented in four sections, each focusing on one aspect of Integrative Body Conditioning, and one short section at the end that ties all the information together. The first section (Irritant Elimination) addresses the primary reasons the body weakens and gets sick. Consisting of four chapters, it covers the environmental, biological, physical and psychological factors that cause inflammation in the body and explains how, if left untreated, they can sabotage your health and fitness efforts. The second section (Nutrient Replacement) is also made up of four chapters. It describes the importance of figuring out which foods rejuvenate and rebuild your body (while fixing any nutrient deficiencies) and how to create a meal plan that ensures you're getting enough of the "good stuff" every day. The third section (Weightlifting and Conditioning) covers the importance of continually leveling up and individualizing your strength training plan. The key is targeting exercises that build and maintain whole body muscle strength in the shortest amount of time. Starting lists of exercises and conditioning workouts are provided. The fourth and final section (Becoming a Body Whisperer) describes how to take the concepts learned from the first three sections to achieve your best body potential. It includes a brief explanation on how I practice the method on a daily basis, as well as the single most important habit you need to embrace to build and maintain a strong body for life. I've also included homework at the end of each section to help readers make the most of the material. Don't skip the homework. If you really want to "get it," you're going to need to witness and experience everything that's happening in your body. Hence, I strongly recommend you start a health journal. Not only will it help you keep track of the homework, it will help illuminate the subtle ways your body reacts to different food, exercise and lifestyle choices, as well as the cues its providing to help re-balance it. Finally, if you're looking for a "quick fix," this book probably isn't for you. This method is all about finding out how your body works and what it needs Each person's journey is different, but by practicing this method, you won't just learn how your body works, you'll have the key that unlocks your ability to create a slender, healthy, strong and glowing body for the rest of your life!"

Book excerpt: An innovative and easy-to-use application of Pilates principles to the training, conditioning, and rehabilitation of horses. This highly illustrated how-to manual provides a clear guide to new ways of thinking about how to prevent injury in the horse, and when injuries do happen, to help the horse's body recover in a mindful and safe way. As a Pilates teacher for humans, horsewoman and eventer Laura Reiman has seen first-hand how consistent, quality exercise can ward off strain and injury, as well as heal. When her young horse was diagnosed with extreme back pain and a neurological disease, she turned to her knowledge of Pilates--the method she'd used to ease back pain in human clients for years--for help. She began to find ways to "bridge the gap" between the horse's mind and body to help increase his body awareness and core engagement. The result is a cohesive series of original exercises that can be taken in parts or as a whole and seamlessly incorporated into an existing training program to be a: Preventive tool to increase the horse's strength, balance, mobility, and stability. Framework for a new program to help ease a horse back into work following an injury or time off. Readers will find chapters dedicated to: Observation-Basic anatomy and how to "know" your horse's body and movement. Stretching-Including incentive, supported static hold, and dynamic mobilization stretches. Core work-Such as the cat stretch and bridging. In-hand strengthening work-With exercises like criss-cross and ground pole progressions. Exercises on the longe line-Transitions, bending, and spiraling. Lessons under saddle-Gymnastics, hillwork, basic dressage, and tips for a successful warm-up. Alternative bodywork-Temperature therapy, massage, stability pads, bands, and more. Pilates for Horses is an ideal instructional guide for all riders and trainers looking to build and maintain a solid foundation of strength and comfort for their horses.

Book excerpt: Here is a valuable book intended to help those occupational therapists working in mental health settings to refine their critical thinking about the group activities they select and the protocols they design. Experts focus on practicing sound clinical reasoning and clinical decision making to ensure careful assessment of which activities, structured in what fashion, are appropriate for particular populations. They also address the topic of providing services that are relevant, practical, have already delineated goals and objectives, produce outcome data, and can be replicated across settings. Group Protocols: A Psychosocial Compendium offers readers a systematic approach to the assessment and design of group protocols, plus a wide variety of sample protocols from which treatment strategies may be drawn. Because this volume represents a style of thinking rather than a singular theoretical frame of reference, it will be useful to any occupational therapist for whom groups are an essential aspect of professional practice.
