Book Synopsis The Awakening Body by : Reginald A. Ray
Download or read book The Awakening Body written by Reginald A. Ray and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A senior Buddhist teacher offers fundamental body-based meditation practices that prove enlightenment is as close to you as your own body Many of us experience life through so many conceptual filters that we never recognize the freedom and joy that are inherent in us—and are in fact the essence of who we are. We can grow old not realizing that one of the most powerful tools to escape the painful knots we tie ourselves in is, literally, at our fingertips: our body. With The Awakening Body, Reggie Ray cracks open the shell of the mind-body dichotomy and presents six fundamental body-based practices that connect us back to who we really are. These practices cut through the mental fabrications through which we experience our world and lead us directly to the richness of living a fully present, embodied human life. This book includes a link to free downloads of recorded guided practices.
Download or read book The Body Artist written by Don DeLillo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-04-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning novel by the bestselling National Book Award–winning author of White Noise and Underworld. Since the publication of his first novel Americana, Don DeLillo has lived in the skin of our times. He has found a voice for the forgotten souls who haunt the fringes of our culture and for its larger-than-life, real-life figures. His language is defiantly, radiantly American. In The Body Artist his spare, seductive twelfth novel, he inhabits the muted world of Lauren Hartke, an artist whose work defies the limits of the body. Lauren is living on a lonely coast, in a rambling rented house, where she encounters a strange, ageless man, a man with uncanny knowledge of her own life. Together they begin a journey into the wilderness of time, love and human perception. The Body Artist is a haunting, beautiful and profoundly moving novel from one of the finest writers of our time.

Book Synopsis Embodying Modernity by : Daniel Silva
Download or read book Embodying Modernity written by Daniel Silva and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embodying Modernity examines the current boom of fitness culture in Brazil in the context of the white patriarchal notions of race, gender, and sexuality through which fitness practice, commodities, and cultural products traffic. The book traces the imperial meanings and orders of power conveyed through “fit” bodies and their different configurations of muscularity, beauty, strength, and health within mainstream visual media and national and global public spheres. Drawing from a wide range of Brazilian visual media sources including fitness magazines, television programs, film, and social media, Daniel F. Silva theorizes concepts and renderings of modern corporality, its racialized and gendered underpinnings, and its complex relationship to white patriarchal power and capital. This study works to define the ubiquitous parameters of fitness culture and argues that its growth is part of a longer collective nationalist project of modernity tied to whiteness, capitalist ideals, and historical exceptionalism.

Book Synopsis Media and the Rhetoric of Body Perfection by : Dr Deborah Harris-Moore
Download or read book Media and the Rhetoric of Body Perfection written by Dr Deborah Harris-Moore and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of the so-called ‘obesity epidemic’, Media and the Rhetoric of Body Perfection critically examines the discourses of physical perfection that pervade Western societies, shedding new light on the rhetorical forces behind body anxieties and extreme methods of weight loss and beautification. Drawing on rich interview material with cosmetic surgery patients and offering fresh analyses of various texts from popular culture, including internationally-screened reality-television shows including The Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover and The Swan as well as entertainment programs and documentaries, this book examines the ways in which Western media capitalize on body anxiety by presenting physical perfection as a moral imperative, while advertising quick and effective transformation methods to erase physical imperfections. With attention to contemporary lines of resistance to standards of thinness and attempts to redefine conceptions of beauty, Media and the Rhetoric of Body Perfection will appeal to scholars and students of popular culture, television, media and cultural studies, as well as the sociology of the body, feminist thought, body transformation and cosmetic surgery.
Book Synopsis A History of My Brief Body by : Billy-Ray Belcourt
Download or read book A History of My Brief Body written by Billy-Ray Belcourt and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy-Ray Belcourt's collection of personal essays opens with a tender letter to his kokum and memories of his early life in the hamlet of Joussard, Alberta, and on the Driftpile Cree Nation. From there, it expands to encompass the big and broken world around him, in all its complexity and contradictions: a legacy of colonial violence and the joy that flourishes in spite of it, first loves and first loves lost, sexual exploration and intimacy, and the act of writing as a survival instinct and a way to grieve. What emerges is not only a profound meditation on memory, gender, anger, shame and ecstasy, but also the outline of a way forward. With startling honesty, and in a voice distinctly and assuredly his own, Belcourt situates his life experiences within a constellation of seminal queer texts, among which this book is sure to earn its place. Eye-opening, intensely emotional and excessively quotable, A History of My Brief Body demonstrates over and over again the power of words to both devastate and console us.

Book Synopsis An Unexplained Death by : Mikita Brottman
Download or read book An Unexplained Death written by Mikita Brottman and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Unexplained Death is an obsessive investigation into a mysterious death at the Belvedere—a once-grand hotel—and a poignant, gripping meditation on suicide and voyeurism “The poster is new. I notice it right away, taped to a utility pole. Beneath the word ‘Missing,’ printed in a bold, high-impact font, are two sepia-toned photographs of a man dressed in a bow tie and tux.” Most people would keep walking. Maybe they’d pay a bit closer attention to the local news that evening. Mikita Brottman spent ten years sifting through the details of the missing man’s life and disappearance, and his purported suicide by jumping from the roof of her own apartment building, the Belvedere. As Brottman delves into the murky circumstances surrounding Rey Rivera’s death—which begins to look more and more like a murder—she contemplates the nature of and motives behind suicide, and uncovers a haunting pattern of guests at the Belvedere, when it was still a historic hotel, taking their own lives on the premises. Finally, she fearlessly takes us to the edge of her own morbid curiosity and asks us to consider our own darker impulses and obsessions.

Book Synopsis Here, and Here by : Vasilis Papageorgiou
Download or read book Here, and Here written by Vasilis Papageorgiou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important to the essays here is the possibility of using logos without the negative, restricting and violent aspects of logos. In this respect I speak about affirmation and about tragic awareness rather than about the tragic itself or tragic conflict, as I read texts of a literary democracy that is already here, texts by Don DeLillo, Tomas Tranströmer, John Ashbery and Thanasis Valtinos, or see arrangements by Lo Snöfall. Indeed it is all about arrangements, about knowing how to affirm and doing it rather than using language and its codes in order to transcribe, however accurate this might be. Arrangements say yes, since they do not raise any absolute boundaries. The arrangement is a logos without logos: it is a cosmos, where affirming is a tragically aware cosmetics. Cosmos is neither the world nor any ordering or embellishment of this world, but an openness as the incalculable accumulation of arrangements that say yes in their awareness that they do not amount to an ontology.

Book excerpt: Iliad, my main character who suffers from amnesia after being shot by a pervert, is now pursued by another. Toerch is his name a man who will go to any extreme to get his way and his sights are on Iliad. So far she' managed to best him at every encounter they've had. But with every set-back, he's found new ways of retaliating. The last incident was especially hurtful for Iliad because the man shot two of her friends. One of them was Diana's brother, a policeman from California visiting her. The other was Trixie, a friend, who in the ensuing death struggle managed to put them both in the river. The raging waters separate the struggling duo and Toerch is picked up by Mahogany, an acquaintance of his. She takes him to the nearest hospital, but when he realizes she's done, getting out of there becomes a priority. He devices a clever plan and with her help, he's gone long before the law discover his whereabouts. Every officer in Athens wants to get their hands on Toerch, as does Iliad.
