Book Synopsis The Girl in the Blue Beret by : Bobbie Ann Mason
Download or read book The Girl in the Blue Beret written by Bobbie Ann Mason and published by Random House Incorporated. This book was released on 2011 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the wartime experiences of her late father-in-law, award-winning author Bobbie Ann Mason has written an unforgettable novel about an American World War II pilot shot down in Occupied Europe. When Marshall Stone returns to his crash site decades later, he finds himself drawn back in time to the brave people who helped him escape from the Nazis. He especially recalls one intrepid girl guide who risked her life to help him--the girl in the blue beret. At twenty-three, Marshall Stone was a U.S. flyboy stationed in England. Headstrong and cocksure, he had nine exhilarating bombing raids under his belt when enemy fighters forced his B-17 to crash-land in a Belgian field near the border of France. The memories of what happened next--the frantic moments right after the fiery crash, the guilt of leaving his wounded crewmates and fleeing into the woods to escape German troops, the terror of being alone in a foreign country--all come rushing back when Marshall sets foot on that Belgian field again. Marshall was saved only by the kindness of ordinary citizens who, as part of the Resistance, moved downed Allied airmen through clandestine, often outrageous routes (over the Pyrenees to Spain) to get them back to their bases in England. Even though Marshall shared a close bond with several of the Resistance members who risked their lives for him, after the war he did not look back. But now he wants to find them again--to thank them and renew their ties. Most of all, Marshall wants to find the courageous woman who guided him through Paris. She was a mere teenager at the time, one link in the underground line to freedom. Marshall's search becomes a wrenching odyssey of discovery that threatens to break his heart--and also sets him on a new course for the rest of his life. In his journey, he finds astonishing revelations about the people he knew during the war--none more electrifying and inspiring than the story of the girl in the blue beret. Intimate and haunting, The Girl in the Blue Beret is a beautiful and affecting story of love and courage, war and redemption, and the startling promise of second chances.

The young sweethearts married in New York City in 1949. Life was wonderful; they felt they had the perfect family when Reggie was born. Little did they know that their life was about to be torn apart. This is a story of their love, the Korean war, heroism and new love found. The Korean War, 1950 to 1953, the Forgotten War, 33,665 U.S. Armed Forces members were KIA, 92,134 were wounded and 8,176 are still MIA. One million seven hundred and eighty nine thousand Americans served in the Korean War. We must not forget their sacrifice. Mike O "Brien a young New York City man served his country. His young wife received his Medal of Honor posthumously. SGreater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13) No one had done more to win victory, than Mike O "Brien had. Those whose lives he saved will never forget his self-sacrificing heroic actions. Mike told his wife, if anything ever happened to him, she must get on with her life. Little did she know one of the men, saved by Mike, would be the man, she would eventually marry? Please read some of the random sample paragraphs:Early one morning her worse fears materialized when she received that dreaded telegram from the War Department. The Commanding Officer of Pine Camp and the pastor delivered it. It stated, Corporal Mike O "Brien had been KIA, killed in action in Korea. He had died in the Battle of Bloody Ridge. For valor above and beyond the call of duty; he had received the recommendation for the Medal of Honor. "Corporal O "Brien refused to leave his wounded comrades, including the commanding officer Captain Jake Smith, during the Battle of Bloody Ridge on September 5, 1951. When darkness set in the survivors attempted to withdraw to US lines. Corporal O "Brien carried the wounded Captain to safety. He then made a second trip beyond the safety of US lines to rescue Corporal Dempsey the second wounded man stranded in no mans land.Upon getting to the safety of American lines, additional enemy troops attacked. Corporal Mike O "Brien sacrificed his life by using his own body to shield the three wounded men lying in the fox hole by throwing himself on a live enemy hand grenade, that had been thrown into the fox hole by enemy soldiers. "They went back into the room. Jake said to his parents, SPatricia and I have something to tell you. , and then they told his parents how they felt. Jake then said, SPatricia has agreed to marry me as soon as I "m on my feet. Both of his parents, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed happiness to have Jake on the mend, a new daughter, and a grandson. Mrs. Smith said, SThis is the best Christmas of my life! Reggie left his fire truck, went to his mom; at the same time, he stared excitedly at Jake asking, SWill Jake be my Daddy? His mother told him yes. He clapped his hands, hugged his mom, while she took him over to Jake for a hug. When Patricia set him down on the floor, he looked up at Mrs. Smith with a big smile and said, SMy Christmas is even better than yours. Last night before you put me to bed I prayed for a Daddy! Her instrument ratings allowed her to fly at night. She often spoke about the first time that she took Reg flying at night. SWe left the airport just after sunset and had light cloud cover at 3,000 feet to a height of 5,000 feet. Once we entered the clouds, it was difficult for Reg to orient himself, because he had lost sight of the ground lights. I told Reg that this time we would climb higher and higher until we found the stars hiding above the clouds. SMom, Mom it "s so beautiful, we are almost at heavens gates. I held his hand and told him that he was absolutely right. It was our moment, one that neither of us would ever forget.

Book Synopsis The Great Promise by : Frederick L. Coxen
Download or read book The Great Promise written by Frederick L. Coxen and published by Frederick L Coxen. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick L. Coxen's life was changed when he stumbled upon his late grandfather's journal from World War I. Coxen did more than just transcribe the worn, weathered diary and annotate it with maps and a historical narrative to create this volume. He devoted years attempting to fulfill the terms of a pact his grandfather had made with three fellow soldiers in the summer of 1914-an unkept pledge that, to his dying day, haunted the elder Coxen. The Great Promise is thus a primary source, a history, and a personal quest. Coxen's grandfather (also named Frederick Coxen) was called to the colors to serve in the Royal Field Artillery. He was among the first British soldiers to land in France at the start of The Great War, and he fought in every major engagement until being gassed in 1915. The journal covers his first year at the front almost day by day. His reports, observations, emotional asides, musings, and even occasional jokes lure the reader into a fascinating, detailed, and very human time capsule. To assist those unfamiliar with the period, the younger Coxen intersperses his grandfather's entries with short but clear passages explaining the commanders, maneuvers, and terminology of the First World War. His simple, clean maps show the routes his ancestor trod and the towns he fought over. These help set the stage for his grandfather's wonderful and rarely hurried prose. There are episodes of unconscionable horror, such as the crucifixion of captured soldiers (by both sides) and reflections on the deaths of friends and enemies alike. Upon seeing one man fall, for example, the elder Coxen writes, "I wondered if this means the breaking of a woman's heart, or had he little children?" There are also warm moments, such as when soldiers share their already meager rations with starving refugee children, and bits of very British pluck, notably of how "nothing short of an earthquake would make us miss our tea time." The journal entries allow the reader to follow one of many green young men as he matures within months into a war-weary veteran. While his ancestor's words and experiences are the true stars of the text, there is a second story here, one told almost as an afterthought in the last twenty pages of an already slim book. The elder Coxen and three comrades made a pact that if any of them fell, the survivors would visit the deceased soldier's family, relate the story of his passing, and offer comfort. Coxen saw all three of his mates die, even holding one of them in his arms as he expired. Yet, he never made good on his part of the bargain. As he laments in an entry made in another journal in 1945, when living in America and writing during a second war, those old comrades continued to haunt Coxen's dreams, asking if he would ever fulfill that great promise. How his grandson sought to made good on Coxen's word, and the detective efforts he undertook to find the descendants of those dead soldiers, is a short but engrossing and very moving story, and one well told by the author in his final chapter.Mark McLaughlin (Clarion Reviews)

Book excerpt: A “truly enjoyable” journey through one man’s Jewish American experience by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Marjorie Morningstar (Newsday). Israel David Goodkind is a minor bureaucrat in the Nixon White House, killing time in the office by writing the story of four generations of his large, sprawling Russian Jewish immigrant family. As he recounts his brief stint in show business, his torrid affair with a showgirl, and his encounters with a hassled and distracted President Nixon, Goodkind also witnesses historical events firsthand—the Watergate scandal, the Yom Kippur War—and eventually finds his way back to his Jewish faith. Combining Pulitzer Prize winner Herman Wouk’s wildly comic streak with his deep respect for religious tradition, Inside, Outside is both an individual’s story and “a social comedy of Jewish-American life reaching from New York to Jerusalem and spanning much of the 20th century” (Publishers Weekly). “Extremely funny.” —The Wall Street Journal “Wouk reaffirms his position as one of the nation’s eminent storytellers.” —Newsday “Wouk’s most significant work since The Caine Mutiny.” —Chicago Tribune “Generously stuffed with zestfully old-fashioned humor and sentiment.” —Kirkus Reviews
