Book excerpt: Dear Fellow Boater: I know I spent too much my first year as a boat owner. Most of it went to marine stores and boat yards. Like you, I quickly discovered how much it costs to keep a boat in good running order. And how expensive many of the upgrades and "toys" I wanted were. Staring at a stack of receipts, I decided there had to be a cheaper way to maintain and upgrade a boat, without sacrificing safety. It took four more years of boat ownership, but I gradually developed strategies to save money on almost every purchase related to the boat.
