Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'On the Wallaby, The Diary of a Queensland Swagman' is an adventure novel written in first-person perspective by Edward Sorenson. This is a plain bush yarn, relating in a humorous vein the experiences and adventures of a young man, who, finding himself stranded in Brisbane, where he knew no one, shouldered his swag and struck out into the bush to look for a job. His track from Breakfast Creek to beyond the Maranoa River, may be traced on the map, for he deals only with real places—and real people—and what he goes through is what the majority of swag men go through. Always an optimist, he sees the humor of the situations, and his narrative is embellished with details of bushcraft, and with the yarns and the fun of campfire and track.

In one week, Scott Stoll lost his job, his best friend, his girlfriend and his confidence. Disillusioned with society, full of angst, a lost and wandering soul with nothing left to lose, Stoll asked himself a question: "If I only have one life, one chance, if I could do anything, what would I do?"His answer resulted in a 4 year and 25,742 mile odyssey around the world by bicycle, seeking answers to the great mysteries of life, vowing to find happiness or die trying. The quest wasn't easy. He was imprisoned, held hostage, mugged, run over, suspected of terrorism, accused of espionage, trampled, diseased, heartbroken-he nearly died a dozen times. But more importantly, in the most unlikely places, Scott also discovered the wonders of the world, kindness among strangers, the meaning of life, peace, love and-Yes!-happiness.Re-live and re-imagine an archetypal journey around the world on a bicycle as a man stumbles through moments of pure survival and moments of pure enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Encounters in Translated Children's Literature offers a detailed and innovative model of analysis for examining the complexities of translating children's literature and sheds light on the interpretive choices at work in moving texts from one culture to another. The core of the study addresses the issue of how images of a nation, locale or country are constructed in translated children's literature, with the translation of Australian children's fiction into French serving as a case study. Issues examined include the selection of books for translation, the relationship between children's books and the national and international publishing industry, the packaging of translations and the importance of titles, blurbs and covers, the linguistic and stylistic features specific to translating for children, intertextual references, the function of the translation in the target culture, didactic and pedagogical aims, euphemistic language and explicitation, and literariness in translated texts. The findings of the case study suggest that the most common constructs of Australia in French translations reveal a preponderance of traditional Eurocentric signifiers that identify Australia with the outback, the antipodes, the exotic, the wild, the unknown, the void, the end of the world, the young and innocent nation, and the Far West. Contemporary signifiers that construct Australia as urban, multicultural, Aboriginal, worldly and inharmonious are seriously under-represented. The study also shows that French translations are conventional, conservative and didactic, showing preference for an exotic rather than local specificity, with systematic manipulation of Australian referents betraying a perception of Australia as antipodean rural exoticism. The significance of the study lies in underscoring the manner in which a given culture is constructed in another cultural milieu, especially through translated children's literature.

At first, she thought she would be facing it without her beloved companion, Blue, the Australian cattle dog who had become her soul mate in the Outback. Soon enough, everyone realised that Sandra and Blue simply couldn't live without each other. And Blue joined his mistress for a brand-new life in Europe. Now that he was a city dog, Blue quickly learnt some handy new skills, like shopping for groceries for the family and doing household chores. But in the face of sudden tragedy, his survival skills from the Outback days kick in, and Blue embarks on a long and lonely adventure to reunite with his beloved Sandra. Will he make it back to her alive?
