Book excerpt: Catcher Gus Triandos dubbed the Philadelphia Phillies' 1964 season "the year of the blue snow"a rare thing that happens once in a great while. The Phillies were having a spectacular season in which everything was going right. They held a 6 1/2 game lead at the conclusion of play on September 20. With just 12 games to play, they seemingly had it made. But the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals never gave up, and when the Phillies lost ten consecutive games, it became a thrilling pennant race for Cardinals and Reds fans, but a horrific collapse for Phillies fanatics. But wait a minute. When it was seemingly too late, the Phillies finally won a game—and the first-place Cardinals lost two games to the lowly New York Mets, so on the last day of the season there was the distinct possibility of a three-way tie for first place. It would have been a first in baseball history. On the final day of the season, the Phillies beat the Reds handily, 10-0. All eyes and ears were fixed on the Mets-Cardinals game. Could the Mets knock off the first-place Cardinals for a third straight game? The Mets carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but finally succumbed, 11-5. But what a season for Phillies fans. Jim Bunning had thrown the first perfect game in the last 84 years of NL history. The hero of the 1964 All-Star Game was the team's right fielder Johnny Callison, who brought the National League victory with the third walk-off home run in the history of the All-Star Game. The team also boasted the electrifying NL Rookie of the Year - the team's slugging third baseman Richie Allen (later called Dick Allen). St. Louis won the pennant, and went on to beat the Yankees in the World Series. But in Philadelphia, the '64 campaign left an ache that lasted for years. The 1964 Phillies not only "lost" the pennant but, following 1964, they got steadily worse. This book sheds light on the facts for the reader to determine answers to lingering questions they may still have about the Phillies team in the 1964 season—but any book about a team is really about the players. A collaborative effort by 37 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), this work offers life stories of all the players and others (managers, coaches, owners, and broadcasters) associated with this star-crossed team, as well as essays of analysis and historical recaps. Book excerpt: From The New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for Sale comes the moving and powerful story of a small town after a devastating avalanche, and the life changing effects it has on the people who live there Whiter Than Snow opens in 1920, on a spring afternoon in Swandyke, a small town near Colorado's Tenmile Range. Just moments after four o'clock, a large split of snow separates from Jubilee Mountain high above the tiny hamlet and hurtles down the rocky slope, enveloping everything in its path including nine young children who are walking home from school. But only four children survive. Whiter Than Snow takes you into the lives of each of these families: There's Lucy and Dolly Patch—two sisters, long estranged by a shocking betrayal. Joe Cobb, Swandyke's only black resident, whose love for his daughter Jane forces him to flee Alabama. There's Grace Foote, who hides secrets and scandal that belies her genteel façade. And Minder Evans, a civil war veteran who considers his cowardice his greatest sin. Finally, there's Essie Snowball, born Esther Schnable to conservative Jewish parents, but who now works as a prostitute and hides her child's parentage from all the world. Ultimately, each story serves as an allegory to the greater theme of the novel by echoing that fate, chance, and perhaps even divine providence, are all woven into the fabric of everyday life. And it's through each character's defining moment in his or her past that the reader understands how each child has become its parent's purpose for living. In the end, it's a novel of forgiveness, redemption, survival, faith and family.

Book excerpt: Finally the time to end an intense day of work, full of annoyances has arrived. An actual marathon to complete my part in the gearbox that is the company in which I work, a company where it is impossible to stop without damaging the rest. I was collecting some papers from my office when I heard the familiar sound that the computer makes when I receive a new email. At those hours, I usually don’t check them as I prefer to be fresh when I see them, and today had been an exhausting day. I’ll see it tomorrow when I come back. Generally, I don’t read them until the next morning, I don’t even do it at home with the intention of separating my professional and personal life. Translator: Aline Nicolai PUBLISHER: TEKTIME

Book excerpt: Combining on–the–slopes experience with off–trail research, author Charlie English follows in the footsteps of the Romantic poets across the Alps, learns how to build igloos with the Inuit on Baffin Island, examines snow–patches in the Cairngorms to detect signs of global warming, and tests his mettle on some of the most perilous peaks on Earth. Along the way, he meets up with a flurry of fellow enthusiasts, from avalanche survivors and resort operators to climate scientists and champion skiers. English is obsessed with snow, and has collected for our enjoyment an amazing array of not–so–random facts about the hexagonal substance that fills the human imagination with wonder. In this "snow handbook," he describes how snow is created, how to build an igloo, how avalanches occur, and (more importantly) how to survive an avalanche. His glossary is filled with snow terms that will delight, such as "coulior," "hoarfrost," "firn," and "sastrugi." Fresh and fun and infused with the adrenaline of adventure, The Snow Tourist is a fascinating account of one man's pilgrimage through the world's blanketed fields, ice–capped rooftops, cozy igloos, and snow–covered mountain peaks.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time there was a mirror. . . . So begins this dark, unusual retelling of the story of Snow White by the writer reviewers have called "the Angela Carter of the fantasy field"—a whole novel based on a beloved story, turning it into a dark and sensual drama full of myth and magic. Arpazia is the aging queen who paces the halls of a warlord's palace. Cold as winter, she has only one passion—for the mysterious hunter who courts the outlawed old gods of the woodland. Coira is the princess raised in the shadow of her mother's hatred. Avoided by both her parents and half forgotten by her father's court, she grows into womanhood alone . . . until the mirror speaks, and blood is spilled, and the forest claims her. The tragic myth of the goddess Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, stolen by the king of the underworld, is woven together with the tale of Snow White to create a powerful story of mothers and daughters and the blood that binds them together, for good or ill. Black queen. White maid. Royal huntsman. Seven little folk who live in the forest. Come inside, sit by the fire, and listen to this fairy tale as you've never heard it told before. Once upon a time there was a mirror, and a girl as white as snow. . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
