The young folks were paired off courting in the wagons or walking or sitting under the shade of the trees, while the women were in groups exchanging such ideas as they possessed and sampling one another's snuff. Their gossip, however, ran little on two things often discussed by women--dress and slander, for be it said to their credit their was little social sin among them and what there was was little talked about, and they were opposed in thought and habit to the modern notions of dress. Their talk ran on their homes, their domestic duties, their children, their pigs, and their chickens. In their simple way they talked about these things, now and then bringing in something about the great outside world and some things of which they had heard as existing there. But a great deal of the time they did not talk at all, but sat or stood looking at one another. A big, brawny brother arose with a hymn book in his hand, and whiskers on his chin. He drawled out a hymn with a nasal whine it is impossible to describe or illustrate. When he had finished reading a few lines he raised the tune and the others followed at different distances behind while the song went on with its doleful drag. The prayer was long drawled out in the same sing-song manner and was very disconnected. Then Brother Beasley arose to preach. He adjusted his glasses with great care and taking the old pulpit Bible he looked long and carefully for his text, beginning at the first of the book and going through to the last while the people waited calmly and patiently for the beginning'.
