Book excerpt: “Ranks with Vonnegut’s best and goes one step beyond . . . joyous, soaring fiction.”—The Atlanta Journal and Constitution Broad humor and bitter irony collide in this fictional autobiography of Rabo Karabekian, who, at age seventy-one, wants to be left alone on his Long Island estate with the secret he has locked inside his potato barn. But then a voluptuous young widow badgers Rabo into telling his life story—and Vonnegut in turn tells us the plain, heart-hammering truth about man’s careless fancy to create or destroy what he loves. Praise for Bluebeard “Vonnegut is at his edifying best.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “The quicksilver mind of Vonnegut is at it again. . . . He displays all his talents—satire, irony, ridicule, slapstick, and even a shaggy dog story of epic proportions.”—The Cincinnati Post “[Kurt Vonnegut is] a voice you can trust to keep poking holes in the social fabric.”—San Francisco Chronicle “It has the qualities of classic Bosch and Slaughterhouse Vonnegut. . . . Bluebeard is uncommonly feisty.”—USA Today “Is Bluebeard good? Yes! . . . This is vintage Vonnegut—good wine from his best grapes.”—The Detroit News “A joyride . . . Vonnegut is more fascinated and puzzled than angered by the human stupidities and contradictions he discerns so keenly. So hop in his rumble seat. As you whiz along, what you observe may provide some new perspectives.”—Kansas City Star

Book excerpt: The Story of Bluebeard is taken from the Perrault original, and illustrated with pictures and ornaments by Joseph Southall. The tale of ‘Bluebeard’ has stood the test of time; enchanting readers with its other-worldly combination of horror and fairy-tale-endings. The text is accompanied and surrounded by the wonderful black-and-white illustrations of Joseph Southall (1861 – 1944) who was heavily associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement; one of the last outposts of romanticism in the visual arts. Book Synopsis An Edmund Dulac Treasury by : Edmund Dulac
Download or read book An Edmund Dulac Treasury written by Edmund Dulac and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in tales both ancient and modern, these vibrant images date from the early twentieth century's Golden Age of Illustration. Edmund Dulac, a prominent artist of the period, created them for books published between 1905 and 1928. Their moods range from the shadowy foreboding of Jane Eyre to the venturesome spirits of Treasure Island and the lighthearted fantasies of A Fairy Garland. Other featured titles include Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Arabian Nights, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. French-born Edmund Dulac arrived in London in 1904, when new advances in the printing process kindled a rage for picture books. Dulac's imaginative powers and technical skills assured the popularity of his book illustrations, many of which were sold separately as fine art paintings. After World War I, when the appetite for deluxe volumes waned, the artist turned his talents in many new directions, including portraiture, theatrical costume and set design, newspaper caricature, and stamp design. This retrospective of his early works is the only such anthology available, offering a singular tribute to an artist from a halcyon era of art inspired by literature.

Book Synopsis The Sleeping Beauty and Other Tales by : Charles Perrault
Download or read book The Sleeping Beauty and Other Tales written by Charles Perrault and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes five famous tales by Charles Perrault illustrated by Walter Crane (40 colour illustrations): Little Red Riding Hood; The Master Cat, or Puss in Boots; Blue Beard; The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods; and Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper. Walter Crane was a prominent book illustrator of the 19th century. In cooperation with Edmund Evans, he designed picture books printed in colour, which became the most popular children's books at the time thanks to their high level of craftsmanship and low price. Crane's style shows the influence of the art of the Renaissance and Japanese prints (ukiyo-e). He designed his books according to the belief that "children, like the ancient Egyptians, appear to see most things in profile and like definite statements in design. They prefer well-defined forms and bright, frank colour. They don't want to bother about three dimensions. They can accept symbolic representations. They themselves employ drawing ... as a kind of picture-writing and eagerly follow a pictured story." Crane's work set the standards of taste in the Victorian children's book industry and earned him a reputation as 'the father of the illustrated children's book'.
