Book excerpt: Either by choice or by circumstance, we all encounter times of starting over. Seasons of hardships, abundance, seeking, and struggle all have a purpose because growth demands change. Dare to Bloom urges us to be both vulnerable and resilient in new seasons of life as we boldly position ourselves for what God has for us next. Serial entrepreneur and author, Zim Flores (neè Ugochukwu), reveals the challenges she's faced and how even her failures have helped shape her sense of purpose. Her parents had big plans for her life. The daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Zim Flores was uprooted from her community as a young girl, marking the beginning of her quest for true identity. Though she experienced unprecedented worldly success as a teenager and young adult, Zim declares that even when we feel pressured by the world around us, our true identity is never at risk. In Dare to Bloom, Zim offers practical and hard-won truths about: How to reclaim your true identity How to surrender your desired outcomes to God How to move forward after broken friendships How to find comfort during your darkest hours How to navigate new beginnings with hope for whatever is next How to joyfully participate in your own story--even when you don't know what the future holds Dare to Bloom is a powerful gift for readers in times of transition or struggle who need a reminder that their true identity never changes. It empowers those who feel stuck in their current circumstances to follow God obediently into the unknown, finding joy in each new beginning. Inside you'll find: Breathtaking photography from Zim's travels Thoughtful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter Zimisms--wisdom-filled phrases from the author When everything changes around us, it can be easy to think that we're only as good as our last success. Though our identities are challenged day by day, Dare to Bloom encourages us to reclaim our identity in God, who is unchanging through it all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking and empowering book that will inspire leaders to take a fresh look at a new coalescence between work and life. In Work-Life Bloom: How to Nurture a Team That Flourishes, award-winning author Dan Pontefract takes a fresh look at integrating our professional and personal lives. Just as a flower needs the right mix of sunlight, water, and nutrients to grow and thrive, team members need the right mix of work-life factors to create a fulfilling and harmonious existence. Through primary global research, interviews, and personal experience, Pontefract delves into the current state of work and life, offering practical solutions for leaders and organizations to create environments where teams can flourish. Pontefract argues that there really is no such thing as work-life balance: our rigid attempts to achieve it don't reflect current realities, and are in fact leading us to further burnout, stress, and unhappiness. Instead, he encourages a more holistic approach, promoting the idea of "blooming" in both work and life. Pontefract stresses that for people to succeed, they must reach fulfillment through the integration of work and the personal aspects of life. After all, people bring their work into their lives and their lives into their work; an improved integration is necessary. Pontefract introduces six key work factors — trust, belonging, feeling valued, purpose, strategy, and norms —and six life factors —relationships, skills, well-being, meaning, agency, and respect — essential for creating an integrated work-life ecosystem that genuinely blooms. The 12 factors contain practical solutions and strategies for leaders who want to nurture Work-Life Bloom environments for their team members, and achieve this mindset for themselves. With a unique approach and vivid writing, Work-Life Bloom is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their impact as a leader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yankee temperament seems to be resultant of forces between shrewd bargaining and a genius for faith. Faith kept bargaining from becoming sordid, and bargaining kept faith from becoming gullible. You can’t help admiring these men. They were Puritans with a Mission Street education. They could deal with Scrooge to his disadvantage, and commune with Fenelon to his edification; yet neither function violated the other. Henry Parsons Crowell was a Yankee from Cleveland. You will never measure the sagacity with which he reared great enterprises, or the devotion to his walk with God until you take time to look at his forebears—the Yankees from Connecticut. The constant aplomb of Mr. Crowell indicates a Broadcloth Background. Among his forebears were American pioneers, judges, Yale students, army officers, early business and professional men. Added thereto were years of contacts with captains of industry, inventors, and artisans from Brooklyn to Saskatoon. The most formative of all factors, however, was the unfeigned faith he had from a child. The family altars of his forebears, the Crowells and the Parsons, glow like air-beacons across the night clear back to Colonial Days. In his own time, Mr. Crowell’s fellowships were with the outstanding of all denominations: men committed to evangelical fervor, Trinitarian faith, and sound doctrine. All of the foregoing help explain his quiet power, sure touch, and unbroken equanimity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Line Rescue: Improvised Responses to Katrina and Rita chronicles the brave and creative acts through which Gulf Coast people rescued their neighbors during the chaotic aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ordinary citizens joined in with whatever resources they had. Unlike many of the official responders, vernacular rescuers found ways around paralysis produced by a breakdown in communications and infrastructure. They were able to dispel unfounded fears produced by erroneous or questionable reporting. The essays, personal narratives, media reports, and field studies presented here all have to do with effective and often ingenious answers that emerged from the people themselves. Their solutions are remarkably different from the hamstrung government response, and their perspectives are a tonic to sensationalized media coverage. The first part of the collection deals with Gulf Coast rescuers from outside stricken communities: those who, safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, marshaled their resources to help their fellow citizens. It includes some analysis and scholarly approaches, but it also includes direct responses and firsthand field reports. The second part features the words of hurricane survivors displaced from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities to Houston, Texas. In many cases, the “victims” themselves were the first responders, rescuing family, friends, and strangers. All of the stories, whether from the “outside” or “inside” responders, reveal a shared history of close-knit community bonds and survival skills sharpened by hard times. This book is about what went right in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita—in spite of all that went so wrong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of Ko Hyeong-Ryeol are mostly inspired by the landscapes and cityscapes of Korea, occasionally echoing journeys to other lands. The poet allows his memories and imagination free reign so that his poems escape from the limits of naturalistic description and invite the reader to sense both the interrelatedness and the impermanence of all things. Many poems are reflections of the Buddhist sense of unreality, the discontinuity of time and matter. Ko Hyeong-ryeol grew up in the shadow of Mount Seorak, a wild, rocky mountain in the East of Korea, and many poems return to it. These translations make his work available in English for the first time.
