Grounded with an injured wing, Cody wants Tessa to leave while they still can. But most of their friends and family are missing. He wants to do the right thing and save them all…but it’s too late… Jared had led the army into the mountain. Only to find they were looking to annihilate all vamps, not just the bad ones. The pressure is on – to save friends, family, each other – only the enemy is just as determined that no one survives. Vampire in Conflict The blood farm is gone. Those behind it have either died, been caught, or are on the run. Time to return to the real world. Only normal life isn’t quite what Tessa expected. Good thing, because there is no ‘normal’ anymore. She’s different. Her family is different. Her friends are different. The world around her is different. Trying to find her place is not easy. She wants nothing more than to be a normal teenager and join Cody and his friends on a Friday night out. Cody wants the trouble to be over so he can get back to living the life he used to with one major addition – Tessa. Only Ian and Jewel aren’t healing well, Rhia is acting out of character, and Jared keeps tripping over dead bodies. Then there’s David, who’ll do anything to help Jewel… even something he knows he shouldn’t do. Book excerpt: This text collates and examines the jurisprudence that currently exists in respect of blood-tied genetic connection, arguing that the right to identity often rests upon the ability to identify biological ancestors, which in turn requires an absence of adult-centric veto norms. It looks firstly to the nature and purpose of the blood-tie as a unique item of birthright heritage, whose socio-cultural value perhaps lies mainly in preventing, or perhaps engendering, a feared or revered sense of ‘otherness.’ It then traces the evolution of the various policies on ‘telling’ and accessing truth, tying these to the diverse body of psychological theories on the need for unbroken attachments and the harms of being origin deprived. The ‘law’ of the blood-tie comprises of several overlapping and sometimes conflicting strands: the international law provisions and UNCRC Country Reports on the child’s right to identity, recent Strasbourg case law, and domestic case law from a number of jurisdictions on issues such as legal parentage, vetoes on post-adoption contact, court-delegated decision-making, overturned placements and the best interests of the relinquished child. The text also suggests a means of preventing the discriminatory effects of denied ancestry, calling upon domestic jurists, legislators, policy-makers and parents to be mindful of the long-term effects of genetic ‘kinlessness’ upon origin deprived persons, especially where they have been tasked with protecting this vulnerable section of the population.

Book excerpt: The television series Buffy and Angel revolve around radical conceptions of family. Indeed, their coherence depends on the establishment of nontraditional families that admit vampires, demons, witches, werewolves, and other bizarre characters without censuring them for their peculiarities. This work argues that what makes these characters enduring and engaging is their critical family connections--for their most involved struggles occur not within the graveyard, but around the dinner table, just as the most challenging adversarial forces that they must face are not demons or vampires but the stuff of everyday life. What does "family" encompass within these two series? How does it relate to concepts of gender, sexuality, power and the supernatural as they emerge from the shows' complex narratives? This book explores such questions. It also examines the "chosen family" (an idea marketed specifically by successful programs such as Friends and Sex in the City within the past ten years), juxtaposing it against various images of the fractured biological family displayed in both Buffy and Angel. Through eight chapters addressing various family-related aspects within both shows, this work plots the trajectory of this unstable notion of family, even as it is transformed, remediated, and rendered unrecognizable from a "family values" perspective by the unique and supernatural relationships that proliferate in Buffy and Angel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist critics place a premium on the "real" stories told by the victimized and the oppressed. Haunting Violations offers a corrective to such uncritical acceptance of the "real" in confessional, testimonial, and ethnographic narratives. Through close readings of a wide variety of texts, contributors argue that depictions of the "real" are inherently performative, crafted within the limits and in the interests of specific personal, political, or social projects. Haunting Violations explores the inseparability of discourse and politics in quasi-autobiographical works such as I, Rigoberta Menchú and When Heaven and Earth Changed Places. Contributors consider how the Sri Lankan Mother's Front movement exploits the sanctity of the maternal and how multiple political purposes on both sides bleed through government "documentary" photographs of Japanese-American concentration camp internees. This volume also investigates how South Asian feminists use the authority of their personal experience to critique the film Mississippi Masala and how realist narratives, such as Janet Campbell Hale's autobiographical Bloodlines, Margie Strosser's documentary film Rape Stories, and Shekur Kapur's film Bandit Queen, reexamine how assumptions about power and trauma are embedded in the promise of the real.

Book excerpt: What if the myths about vampires had a real origin? Legacy (blood Bond, #1) Ivan could not have known that one day the strange family inheritance would knock at his door and that, what he believed to be his grandfather's ravings, contained a bond beyond blood, beyond family, beyond time. What to do with a legacy in the form of an ancestor more than 3,000 years old? Velkan woke up in a new century, in a new society, with a new family, but with the same bloodlust, an instinct that kept him alive since he was born and that even Van Helsing could not defeat. Tired of seeing how all his life they had killed and desecrated the bodies of his family because of his nature, tired of the struggles for his protection, unable to see himself loved and fed up of being called a monster, strigoi, vampire or dracul, he decided to put an end to his existence, without getting it. When Velkan and Ivan meet, something more than the inherited family bond is created between them and they begin to trust each other. Velkan will tell you about his time in history by telling you about the age of metals in which he was born, about Vlad III, the Impaler, and will show you what really happened in London in the years of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Will Velkan finally be able to find his place? Can he stop them from thinking he's a vampire? An original and different revision of the legends of vampires, the folklore that exists about them and archaeology, a twist on the myth that will surprise you.
