Book Synopsis A Blazing Vengeance by : Robert Fisher
Download or read book A Blazing Vengeance written by Robert Fisher and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The man sat in his comfortable armchair with a glass of his favorite liquor in his left hand. His attempt at a smile was unsuccessful. Instead his face was contorted into a grotesque mask of hatred. It had taken years of meticulous preparation before finalizing his plan of vengeance. His highly intelligent brain had considered every conceivable contingency. It was perfect. Nothing could possibly go wrong. And now he had finally acquired all the tools necessary to begin. He gloated over the delicious thoughts of the many possible ways to torture before slowly killing the two men who caused this unquenchable fire within him. Their deaths would be tied to the annihilation of millions in the country he blamed for his past humiliationAmerica. He let loose a throaty gale of laughter. His body shuddered with the force of this emotion. Obviously, he was incapable of recognizing that his exceptional mind was on a razors edge between utter brilliance and insanity. For who in their right mind would massacre millions of innocent people no matter what the perceived provocation? His eyes bulged, and spittle dripped from his mouth as he attempted to widen his smug smile at the idea of finally killing his two foes. But this only increased the hideous facade of his face. H e raised his right hand and, with his forefinger, pressed an imaginary start button. Now youre mine! he screamed into the night.
Book Synopsis Early Modern Liveness by : Danielle Rosvally
Download or read book Early Modern Liveness written by Danielle Rosvally and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for early modern theatre to be 'live'? How have audiences over time experienced a sense of 'liveness'? This collection extends discussions of liveness to works from the 16th and 17th centuries, both in their initial incarnations and contemporary adaptations. Drawing on theatre and performance studies, as well as media theory, this volume uses the concept of liveness to consider how early modern theatre – including non-Western and non-traditional performance – employs embodiment, materiality, temporality and perception to impress on its audience a sensation of presence. The volume's contributors adopt varying approaches and cover a range of topics from material and textual studies, to early modern rehearsal methods, to digital and VR theatre, to the legacy of Shakespearean performance in global theatrical repertoires. This collection uses both early modern and contemporary performance practices to challenge our understanding of live performance. Productions and adaptions discussed include the Royal Shakespeare Company's Dream (2021), CREW's Hands on Hamlet (2017), Kit Monkman's Macbeth (2018), Arslanköy Theatre Company's Kraliçe Lear (2019), and a season of productions by the Original Practice Shakespeare Festival. Early Modern Liveness looks beyond theatrical events as primary sites of interpretive authority and examines the intimate and ephemeral experience of encountering early modern theatre in its diverse manifestations.
Download or read book Civil Vengeance written by Emily L. King and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is revenge, and what purpose does it serve? On the early modern English stage, depictions of violence and carnage—the duel between Hamlet and Laertes that leaves nearly everyone dead or the ghastly meal of human remains served at the end of Titus Andronicus—emphasize arresting acts of revenge that upset the social order. Yet the subsequent critical focus on a narrow selection of often bloody "revenge plays" has overshadowed subtler and less spectacular modes of vengeance present in early modern culture. In Civil Vengeance, Emily L. King offers a new way of understanding early modern revenge in relation to civility and community. Rather than relegating vengeance to the social periphery, she uncovers how facets of society—church, law, and education—relied on the dynamic of retribution to augment their power such that revenge emerges as an extension of civility. To revise the lineage of revenge literature in early modern England, King rereads familiar revenge tragedies (including Marston's Antonio's Revenge and Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy) alongside a new archive that includes conduct manuals, legal and political documents, and sermons. Shifting attention from episodic revenge to quotidian forms, Civil Vengeance provides new insights into the manner by which retaliation informs identity formation, interpersonal relationships, and the construction of the social body.

Download or read book Van Loon written by Cornelis Van Minnen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon his death, Hendrik van Loon was described in The Times obituary as 'one of the most engaging products of the marriage between Holland and the United States'. One of FDR's true and closest friends, van Loon emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States at age 20, in 1902. Working as a historian, journalist, illustrator, and radio commentator, van Loon immersed himself in American cultural life from the 1920s through the '40s, until his death three months before D-Day. Van Loon's professional relationships and friendships with such distinguished persons as Sinclair Lewis, Van Wyck Brooks, H. L. Mencken, Albert Einstein, Herbert Hoover, and Fiorello La Guardia bolster his place as a celebrity of his times. This biography is an exciting and nuanced portrait of a man deeply involved in American cultural life in the first half of the twentieth century.
