Book excerpt: It was evident that the passive pressures which developed on the sides played the dominant role in providing resistance. It has been found that in static tests some of the surface load is carried by arching through the soil. In the dynamic tests the inertial forces of the soil above the arch were found to be important. The inertial load overcame the soil shear resistance so that a load approximately equal to the surface load acted on the structure. A model analysis of the system and subsequent comparison of the deflections from the small-structure tests and the Operation Plumbbob Structure 3.3 tests indicate that modeling of deflections is possible.

Book excerpt: The objective of the study was to investigate and verify model-to-prototype scaling relations for blast loaded buried arches that respond both elastically and inelastically. Four geometrically similar, semicircular aluminum alloy arches with 4-, 8-, 12-, and 36-inch diameters were buried in dense dry sand and subjected to air-blast-induced loads on the surface. The tests were conducted at the Large Blast Load Generator located at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The results of two series of tests, each consisting of 3 repeated shots, ranging from 70 to 300 psi, are presented. Within the range of parameters investigated, the scaling of the dependent variables were adequately verified. These variables included acceleration, velocity, displacement, thrust, and bending moment. (Author).

Book excerpt: Static and dynamic tests have been performed to study the behavior of small buried arches. The objective was to gain information which will serve as a guide in developing design methods for underground structures. This report describes the static tests, the prime purposes of which were: (1) to obtain information on the behavior of a statically loaded soil-arch system, and (2) to provide data for comparison with that from a similar system subjected to blast loading. The test configuration consisted of two conterminous semicircular arches each 30 inches in diameter buried in dry sand with 6 inches of cover over the crown. The arches were identical except for differing footing widths. The entire system was contained by the NCEL atomic blast simulator pit, which is 9 feet by 10 feet in plan and 12 feet deep. Static loads up to 25 psi were applied to the surface of the sand as various measurements were being made. The test results show that the expected decrease in footing deflection with increase in footing width was accompanied by an increase of maximum moment in the arch. (Author).

Book excerpt: An approximate method is developed for predicting the deflections of the footings of a buried arch subjected to a blast wave traveling along the surface. Results from the theory are compared with measured values from Operation Plumbbob Structure 3.3a. The influence of the dominant parameters is discussed. It is shown that duration of loading is exceedingly important in governing the magnitude of footing deflections. The theory is presented in a form suitable for use in the design office. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of analysis for buried arches with footings was developed to predict their response to a nuclear airblast overpressure. The method of analysis was formulated by considering the arch ring as a discrete model consisting of a finite number of nodes (flexible joints) connected by rigid bars initially of equal length. The results of laboratory and field tests on 1/4.5- and 1/2-scale models, respectively, of an arch structure are compared with predictions made using the analysis. Arch internal loads, footing motions, and free-field motions are compared with those predicted by the analysis and compare favorably. The analytical technique was used to predict the response of the prototype structure to a 140-psi air overpressure loading resulting from the detonation of 10-kt, 100-kt, and 1-Mt weapons, to a 100-psi air overpressure for a 1-Mt weapon, and to the Operation Prairie Flat (500-ton TNT) 140-psi overpressure and the predicted response was compared with that assumed in designing the structure. The method of analysis developed is recommended whenever a significant cost savings can be realized because a number of structures are to be constructed or when local soil conditions make design by cruder methods uncertain. Book excerpt: This research was performed to obtain information on the behavior of shallow-buried cylinders subjected to static and blast loads in support of the task objective of gaining knowledge to provide guidelines for developing design methods for underground protective structures. It was especially desired to obtain data on the time and space variations of deflection, thrust, and moment under the two types of loading for purposes of making a comparison. The results show that the net arching across a flexible shallow-buried cylinder is small and that the maximum moment occurs at the bottom of the cylinder. Differences in response to static and blast loading are relatively small except for the crown, which deflects about twice as much under blast loading as under corresponding static loading. An analogy with the simple spring-mass system is drawn to explain this behavior. Information obtained on the influence of placing a low- strength isolating material in the soil over a cylinder indicates that such an expedient is of questionable benefit.

Pipeline, conduits and culverts carry the services on which our economies depend and the strength and resilience of such structures is of vital importance. Larger underground construction is becoming more common in cities and towns, and in defence installations. This book brings t

Book excerpt: The investigation reported herein was undertaken to develop an approach to modeling displacements of surface and shallow-buried footings on dry sand subject to high-intensity, single-pulse loads. A hypothetical shallow-bured structure with an isolated footing loaded by airblast overpressure produced by detonation of a nuclear weapon was assumed for design of load pulses on nine model footings used: footing widths of 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 in. and depth-of-burial to footing width ratios of 0, 0.5, and 1.0. The principles of similitude were used to scale length, force, and time in the models. The models were placed in mobile test bins of uniform, fine, dry sand (90 percent relative density) and subjected to dynamic and static loading. Nondimensional load-displacement relations dependent only on depth-of-burial ratio were developed relating maximum displacement to peak dynamic load, footing width, and soil shear strength gradient. When the dynamic response of the footings in the form of reaction-displacement curves was compared with static response, an increase in initial stiffness and ultimate strength was observed for dynamic loading. However, these dynamic increases were greatest when the static shear strength was lowest, i.e. footings on the surface, and were least for footings buried at a depth equal to its width where the static overburden produced a substantial increase in shear strength. Book excerpt: A study was made of the effectiveness of the surrounding soil in restraining the lateral movement of shallow-buried arches subjected to blast overpres ures from a nuclear explosion. The theory is developed for parabolic arches with circular or barrel arches included as a special case. It can be pplied equally well to arches oriented with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to or parallel to the direction of travel of the blast wave. The arch is considered to be buried near the surface of a semi-infinite soil mass. The depth of cover over the crown is limited to one-half of the arch span. The twohinged rather than the fixed arch is selected as representing more closely the shallow-buried rch structures used in full-scale nuclear tests to date. While these structures were not actually pinned at the arch abutments, their behavior under blast loading appears to resemble more closely the pinned th n the fixed case. he principal variables studied in the numerical examples include: (1) depth of cover, (2) overpressure loading, (3) arch material, and (4) arch span.
