Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 43: January-June, 1838 Sir, she said, we had better wait until we reach the office; for really I could not understand the man. He says that my mistress is detained Upon some charge but w/zat, I could not at all make out. He was a man that 'knew something of you, sir, I believe, and he wished to be civil, and kept saying, Oh! I dare say it will turn out nothing at all, many such charges are made idly and carelessly, and some maliciously.' But what charges?' I cried, and then he wanted to speak privately to you. But I told him that of all persons he must not speak to you, if he had any thing painful to tell; for that you were too much disturbed already, and had been for some hours, out of anxiety and terror about my mistress, to bear much more. So, when he heard that, he was less willing to speak freely than before. He might prove wrong, he said; he might give offence; things might turn out far otherwise than ao cording to first appearances; for his part, he could not believe any thing amiss of so sweet a lady. And after all it would be better to wait till we reached the office. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 93: February, 1863 Knowing how little reliance can be placed at any time upon the information published in American newspapers, I was very anxious, if possible, to get to the South and judge for myself as to the condi tion of its people, the strength Of its government, and the Organisa tion of its armies. I had often, during the last year, tried to con jecture what Richmond was like, and felt quite curious to know how the public and private business of the Government was carried on. I confess I entertained a wholesome dread Of being taken prisoner by the Yankees in my endeavour to get through their lines, having per sonally learnt from others who had had the misfortune to come under the displeasure Of local military autocrats, how disagreeable they were in the habit Of making a pri son residence - in many instances, indeed, evincing a barbarity of conduct disgraceful to any nation claiming English descent. But the desire of knowledge, or the promptings of curiosity, as the case may be, determined me upon run ning all risks, and making my way into the forbidden land of Dixey. O'hara and Bateman vanished one day from the last outpost of quasi-civilisa tion, having given out that they were off up-country in search of big game - which was a fact. Their little expedition slipped into the forest, and the wilder ness swallowed it. When once they had pushed out into the unknown interior they were gone past power of recall, were lost as completely as a needle in a ten-acre hay-field; and they breathed more freely because. They had escaped from the narrow zone wherein the law of the white man runs, and need guide themselves for the future merely by the dictates of their own rudimentary notions Of right and wrong. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rhythm and Will in Victorian Poetry, first published in 1999, Matthew Campbell explores the work of four Victorian poets - Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins and Hardy - as they show a consistent and innovative concern with questions of human agency and will. The Victorians saw the virtues attendant upon a strong will as central to themselves and to their culture, and Victorian poetry strove to find an aesthetic form to represent this sense of the human will. Through close study of the metre, rhyme and rhythm of a wide range of poems - including monologue, lyric and elegy - Campbell reveals how closely technical questions of poetics are related, in the work of these poets, to issues of psychology, ethics and social change. He goes on to discuss more general questions of poetics, and the implications of the achievement of the Victorian poets in a wider context, from Milton through Romanticism and into contemporary critical debate.
