Book excerpt: Discussions and research related to the salience of Black male student needs and development in relation to their general success and well?being is well?documented in many fields. Indeed, many studies have found that healthy masculine identity development is associated with a number of positive outcomes for males in general, including Black males. In school counseling literature, however, this discussion has been relatively absent—particularly regarding those students living in urban contexts. Indeed, research devoted to the study of Black males in the school counseling literature focuses almost exclusively on race and issues associated with its social construction with only cursory, if any, attention given to their masculine identity development as a function of living in urban communities and attending urban schools. Based on this lack of information, it is probably a safe assumption that intentional, systematic, culturally relevant efforts to assist Black males in developing healthy achievement and masculine identities based on their unique personal, social, academic experiences and future career goals are not being applied by school counselors concerned with meeting students’ needs. School counselors are in a unique position, nonetheless, to lend their considerable expertise—insights, training and skills—to improving life outcomes among Black males—a population who are consistently in positions of risk according to a number of quality of life indicators. Without knowledge and awareness of Black males’ masculine identity development in urban areas, coupled with the requisite skills to influence the myriad factors that enhance and impede healthy development in such environments, they are missing out on tremendous opportunities which other professions appear to understand and, quite frankly, seem to take more seriously. As such, this book proposes to accomplish two specific goals: 1. Highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends. 2. Encourage school counselors to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender. The first rationale for this book, then, is to highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends (e.g., standards?based accountability practices) in urban environments. However, I recognize the role of school counselors has never been fully integrated into educational reform programs. As such, their positions are often unregulated and determined by people in positions of power who do not understand their training, job?specific standards and, thus, potential impact on the lives of Black male students. As a result, their vast potential to develop strong interventions designed to address the myriad racial and masculine factors that serve to enhance and impede Black males’ academic achievement is often unrealized. Therefore, the second reason for this special issue is to include the scholarship of professional school counselors and counselor educators with policy change in mind. Scholars will be invited to contribute manuscripts that explore race, masculinity and academic achievement in relation to the role of school counselors. This is designed to encourage school counselors and counselor educators to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender.

There was 155 total master's level student counselors surveyed using the Diagnostic and Prognostic Rating form and the Perceived Wellness Survey with one removed due to only completing the demographic information. Participants were asked to answer questions about case information and photo attached to each survey which were randomly assigned to one of 4 digitally manipulated photos of an African American male. This study sought to determine the degree colorism influences, if at all, Masters' level counseling students' clinical judgment of a client case example's mental health and wellness. Using a one-way ANOVA, researchers analyzed scores from all instruments finding no significant differences in counseling students' clinical judgment on mental health and wellness across four skin tones. Future research should explore other methods to represent the general population including qualitative methods, advanced digital manipulation of photographs, and using actual people instead of photographs to enhance further studies involving colorism.

Wood & Harris (2014) Five Domains Conceptual Framework is a holistic framework developed to address unbalanced retention and educational outcomes for African American male college students in a community college setting. This research study seeks shed light on the importance of (e.g., Pre-College, College Achievement, and Post-College Success) united with higher education institutions responsibilities (e.g., faculty engagement, college campus climate, and campus academic and social resources) to improve retention and academic outcomes for African American male college students.

Book excerpt: According to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (2012), college degree attainment among African American males is only 16%, as compared to 20% for African American females, and 32% for Caucasian males. A great deal of research and emphasis has been placed on the struggles, challenges and shortcomings relative to African American male educational attainment. However, more work needs to be done to determine the factors that contribute to their academic success.The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the factors that contributed to the academic success of African American male college students that participated in the Baldwin Wallace University Scholars program (BW Scholars). For this program, cohorts of African American male students are selected during summers before ninth grade. Those scholars receive mentoring, academic enrichment and career readiness opportunities throughout their high school years in preparation for some sort of post-secondary enrollment. The aim of the program is to give the scholars the support that they need to graduate from high school. When a scholar applies to Baldwin Wallace for undergraduate studies and is accepted, he is given a full scholarship to the university. Through one-on-one interviews, eight African American male scholars participated in this study. The results revealed their unique perceptions of academic success, and their attitudes, behaviors, and skills that were necessary for program completion. Despite their attendance in troubled urban high schools, the participants of this study benefitted from encouragement among family and friends, were careful in choosing friends, displayed good time management skills, and had a strong work ethic, all of which were important for their degree completion. Ultimately, the aim of this study is that the insights shared by the participants further inform university instructional programs that are designed to serve African American male college students.

Book excerpt: Research on Black males has continuously been approached from a monolithic perspective that indicates their plight of attendance and achievement in college. This nation has witnessed this decade of declining enrollment of Black males attending and achieving in college. The decreasing number has been apparent and paints a dismal reality for educational institutions, leaders, and students; particularly Black males. While this reality is continuously disturbing and draws immediate attention, successful Black male college students are achieving at a high altitude. Educational institutions and leaders are challenged to help increase Black male student attendance and achievement in college and universities. This challenge begins with switching the focus of what deters Black males from attending and achieving in college to what encourages them by approaching them from a success and not the common deficit model. The purpose of this study was to analyze successful Black male college students' perceptions of their educational environments and the role of educational leaders. Participants were assessed on their perceptions of high school and college environments as well as their perceptions of high school and college educational leaders. A grounded theory approach was used to describe these perceptions. The participants included 21 non-intercollegiate undergraduate Black males, between the ages of 18-25, attending southwestern university (SWU). The data was based on the participants' responses from 21 semi-structured interview questions derived by the researcher. The data revealed four major themes which included (1 positive perceptions of the high school and college educational environments; (2 negative perceptions of the high school and college educational environments; (3 positive perceptions of the educational leaders in high school and college; and finally, (4 negative perceptions of educational leaders in high school and college. The findings exhibited the importance approaching Black males from a non-monolithic perspective. These Black male college students shared different experiences and perceived educational environments and leaders from various perspectives. The findings also showed the importance of focusing towards the success of Black males. The findings did reveal negative perceptions and experiences, yet this study gave credence to the importance of providing balance between positive and negative experiences of Black males.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this Research Topic is to determine the conditions that place students at risk of school failure, identifying student and context variables. In spite of the fact that there is currently little doubt about how one learns and how to teach, in some countries of the “developed world,” there is still there is a high rate of school failure. Although the term “school failure” is a very complex construct, insofar as its causes, consequences, and development, from the field of educational psychology, the construct “student engagement” has recently gained special interest in an attempt to deal with the serious problem of school failure. School engagement builds on the anatomy of the students’ involvement in school and describes their feelings, behaviors, and thoughts about their school experiences. So, engagement is an important component of students’ school experience, with a close relationship to achievement and school failure. Children who self-set academic goals, attend school regularly and on time, behave well in class, complete their homework, and study at home are likely to interact adequately with the school social and physical environments and perform well in school. In contrast, children who miss school are more likely to display disruptive behaviors in class, miss homework frequently, exhibit violent behaviors on the playground, fail subjects, be retained and, if the behaviors persist, quit school. Moreover, engagement should also be considered as an important school outcome, eliciting more or less supportive reactions from educators. For example, children who display school-engaged behaviors are likely to receive motivational and instructional support from their teachers. The opposite may also be true. But what makes student engage more or less? The relevant literature indicates that personal variables (e.g., sensory, motor, neurodevelopmental, cognitive, motivational, emotional, behavior problems, learning difficulties, addictions), social and/or cultural variables (e.g., negative family conditions, child abuse, cultural deprivation, ethnic conditions, immigration), or school variables (e.g., coexistence at school, bullying, cyberbullying) may concurrently hinder engagement, preventing the student from acquiring the learnings in the same conditions as the rest of the classmates.
