Singers and musicians are gathered for a weekend course in folk music at the impressive neo-Gothic country mansion Follymead. Most come only to sing or to listen, but one or two have nonmusical scores to settle. When brilliantly talented Liri Palmer sings “Black, black, black is the colour of my true-love’s heart,” she clearly has a message for someone in the audience. And as passions run high, there is murder brewing at Follymead. Among the music students are Dominic Felse and his girlfriend, Theodosia. When not one, but two, members of the group go missing from the hall, Dominic calls upon his father, Detective Inspector George Felse, to help him solve this most perplexing mystery. Black Is the Colour of My True Love’s Heart is the 6th book in the Felse Investigations, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: In book three of the Curse Workers series, “the perfect end to this gem of a trilogy” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), trust is a priceless commodity and the lines between right and wrong become dangerously blurred. Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the government is the right choice, even though he’s been raised to believe they are the enemy of all curse workers. But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and all new secrets coming to light, what’s right and what’s wrong become increasingly hard to tell apart. When the Feds ask him to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he starts to wonder if they really are the good guys, or if it’s all a con. And if it is, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—on love. Love is dangerous and trust is priceless in Holly Black’s “powerful, edgy, dark” fantasy series (Publishers Weekly).

However, when a child is not given the opportunity to experience the world as any normal adult, the results and the damages it brings can be devastating. Having no proper guidance and love, Aaron, was a child who explored his world, discovered his family, and lived through physical and sexual abuse in a small village. He grew older never to understand the meaning of love, his rights to free will, and his rights to get an education. He was denied everything that was possible under the sun. The world was unkind to Aaron as he searched diligently and effortlessly within himself to find the answers that would right his many wrongs and put an end to his tireless struggles. It seemed everywhere that Aaron turned there was a road block that prevented him from moving forward in his life. Throughout his childhood, Aaron could not understand what he has done to deserve and live through his painful experiences suffering fear, ridicule from strangers and neglect from his own family. Aaron would eventually get older to remember and reflect on all the experiences that occurred in his past. Though these experiences have shaped him into the person he is today, he has dealt with it accordingly by suppressing all the pain and burying it deep within his soul. Still impacted by the roadblocks and malice he encountered through his stay in the village, Aaron has used his experiences as motivation to improve his condition in life. He has become a survivor of death, slavery and abuse but in the end he will never stop to exceed peoples expectations of a child who at one point didnt have a way of being successful in this world. The evil in many peoples hearts has caused tremendous damage to this young childs self esteem but his fight, passion and focus to become someone has embedded a desire in himself to overcome all odds and have a name in this world that will never be forgotten. Book excerpt: Expressed through poetry, essays, and short stories, Voices from a Black Heart Speak examines deep-seated beliefs, perspectives, and emotional feelings derived from the cultural development of black people in the United States. We live in a world where television tells us what to want, how we want to live, and what we want to do. We live in a world where fear of the unknown is to be feared and that's considered normal. It may be considered normal and acceptable, but it's totally irrational as our entire lives and world is based on the unknown. We slide through life on a hope and wish that our lives work out as we planned them. If we look at the major earthquake in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004 that created a Tsunami or Great Wave that killed over 100,000 people and destroyed towns, cities and property in the billions in Asia, we can realize the truth of the fact is that we live our lives in the unknown from moment to moment. The one thing that sustains us is our faith as we journey through life.

Book excerpt: A Black Heart tells the gripping story of a young girl's development from childhood into womanhood. The book opens with the traumatic loss of the heroine Miriam's father, which leaves her at the mercy of an emotionally unstable mother. As Miriam grows older, she grapples with questions of sexuality and spirituality and the tension between them. She struggles to reconcile her practice with her Christian beliefs. The novel is set in apartheid South Africa when racism and oppression were at their height. Not only does this intensify the conflict between mother and daughter, it also creates new problems for the heroine. As the title suggests, Miriam with her white background relates differently from most of her peers to her colleagues and students "across the colour line". While her choices have far-reaching and potentially devastating consequences, ultimately she triumphs when she holds firm to her own convictions. Told in Miriam's voice, this novel is a compelling and sensitive portrayal of a woman's coming of age, particularly in terms of her own sexuality and her growing awareness of social injustices. Despair gives way to hope as the political climate changes, and Miriam's own circumstances give rise to a new beginning. "A quintessentially South African novel" Russell Kaschula, professor of African languages Rhodes University, South Africa

Book excerpt: “Of all the various acts of inequity throughout time, none was more severe than the submission forced upon the indigenous peoples of the earth by their earthly demi-god counterparts. Robbing these peoples of their God given cultural and traditional knowledge of survival, void of cultural references and alienated from their traditional survival techniques and skills, the indigenous peoples had no other choice than to accept the ways of the earthly demi-gods, which was modernity and that came with many social disadvantages, worst of all, they would become second and third class citizens in a racially divided and dystopic world. The standard procedure was the implementation of acts that were intended to impart the greatest degree of fear, the fear of death and the fear of dying; whatever methods the noble savages thought would break the barbarian savages into submission. All manner of unthinkable acts of atrocity were employed against the indigenous peoples, because the objectives of the earthly demi-gods had to be met, which was to expropriate the lands and natural resources from these savages, these ‘uncivilized’ people.” The work of Niggers Sing Redemption Songs: Reggae, The heart-beat of a people takes aim at reaffirming the psyche and glory of the Black self as of utter importance in our efforts to make our world a better place. The unconscionable disregard for the glory of the Black self and by refusing to use it, has successfully stripped away Black humanity from the Black indigenous peoples’ collective consciousness; overall leading to a ‘niggerization’ process done for the benefits of the barbaric and ignobly self-acclaimed earthly demi-gods. The Black peoples of the world must bring back the ‘Black’ love of self and all things Black, that is your redemption and then, real life will be given to you. Additionally, what was most evidently conspicuous and surprising was a revelation that had emerged from the research of this study. The study has discovered evidences, which would indicate that because of social biases, for example, racial prejudices, and out-right arrogance, coupled with miss-education and deprecated mindsets, the attitudes of many Jamaican historians, the down trodden sectors of the Jamaican society were undermined and were not given meaningful historical documentations. The academics did not document, accurately, the accounts of Afro-Jamaican culture, for instance, the Rastafarians input into the cultural history of Jamaica. Although many academics of the time were themselves Afro- Jamaican, non-sympathizers to the Rasta movement, and, in most cases, just a generation or two removed from slavery, they were non-commiserated towards their people’s history and struggles. So much so, that they did not consider the documentation of their Afro-Jamaican culture as a priority, and as such, a deficit in proper documentation of historical material exists today. This becomes quite evident in the footnotes, where due to the lack of material, there is a redundancy in reference materials Therefore, in order to add further depth to the stock of the genre of Black Liberation Literature, this work advances a redemptive process which is aimed, primarily, at every individual that has been niggerized by White supremacy and their racist systems. Therein, that each nigger would cultivate an awareness that would be congruent with his/her Black redemption, as is outlined in this literary work. Thus, that he/her would be empowered sufficiently, to rise above the White supremacist world that had ungratefully grafted him/ her and had restrained him/her to oppressive states of meaningless existences. Black people must rise above their common bound, the social degradation of niggerization, a social construct of the White racist demi-gods and to accept the fundamental merits and opportunities that a Black redemption would have provided, which is, the reconstructed Black self, with all its social advantages, because White America will not change and they will not change for the sake of niggers or will they accept niggers as Whites. Sorry, but no skin bleaching formula will change Blacks into White. The Black experience is not the undoing of the White racist demi-gods; instead, it is the doings of the reconstructed niggers towards the redemption, freedom, of Black individuals.

Book excerpt: Black Heart is a provocative and polemical critique of African American literary studies at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Through a series of sharp and insightful essays on a wide range of critical thinkers, Phillip M. Richards traces what he sees as an erosion of moral reflection in African American literary culture - a process that has left contemporary black academic criticism socially, politically, and culturally hollow. Exploring the work of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Michael Dyson, Karla Holloway and others, Black Heart sets forth the rhetorical strategies of present-day African American critical writing, and probes the ethical dimensions of its institutional life in the academy, the media, and the public sphere. Richards undertakes to recover the procedures by which cultural and moral value may be recovered for black literary culture and to establish the possibilities for a new humanism in African American writing and literary culture.
