Through poetry, narratives, and journal entries, her cancer battle is authentically, and sarcastically, relayed. Experiences involving humor, devastation, blunt testimony, and ultimate hope anchored in her faith, bring this memoir to life. This memoir was written in hopes of reaching the one soul who needs this memoir to assist in his or her own cancer journey.

Book excerpt: Bittersweet Blessings is a book about the sweet experiences and bitter losses of life with God while moving 28 times, attending 17 different schools, and working in 32 positions in the fields of nursing and ministry. Flexibility, like the stretching of a rubber band is not a natural or static human condition, yet like the rubber band, flexibility is gained in change. So, Bittersweet Blessings is about holding on to desires and carrying burdens to God. It is about woundedness and healing and about grief and hope. Bittersweet Blessings is about experiencing the relationships and events of life through an eternal perspective.

Book excerpt: "Hello, my dear, take a seat," were the kind words spoken by the doctor. His quiet manner exuded a self-assurance and efficiency, and his office radiated the warmth of a cheerfully decorated Christmas Eve. "Kathy, I have the results of your tests here. They indicate that you have MDS-Myelodysplasia Syndrome 5q-." "What does this mean, doctor?" "In layman's terms you have a rare form of leukemia, a blood cancer," he said. And so began my journey to Far Horizons.

Book excerpt: The relationship of myth to literature has largely been overshadowed in contemporary theory by perspectives of a linguistic or sociological orientation and by relativist, sometimes negatory, stances on all searches for meaning. This book attempts to show that myth criticism and critical theories of more recent provenance are not irreconcilable. While taking into consideration some of the more influential tenets of structuralist, post-structuralist, Marxist and feminist theory, it applies a post-Jungian ('archetypal') approach to illustrating the perennial nature of a particular myth (the Fall of Man) in two main traditions (Mesopotamian and Christian) and in the contemporary novel in English. The discussions of five major novels by William Golding, Patrick White, Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie, and Wilson Harris not only serve to expand the mythological insights achieved in the first part of the book; they also suggest the incommensurability of imaginal, novelistic life with mythology's age-old intuitions about the human condition. Myth criticism emerges from this book as an irreplaceable vantage-point from which man's lapsarian predicament can be scrutinized synchronically as archaic wisdom, contemporary anxiety, and post-colonial commitment to the building of a new human city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about abortion, but more specifically, about abortions sought due to a poor prenatal diagnosis or due to serious maternal health complications. This book contains 46 personal stories, each one from a woman who decided to interrupt a much-wanted and oftentimes much-planned pregnancy. There is very little societal support for parents who make this decision, which leaves most parents to deal with their sadness and grief alone. The purpose of the book is to share our stories in the hopes of helping other parents who have undergone a similar loss to feel less alone, less isolated, and less stigmatized. We hope to give a voice to all who have suffered a similar loss and to show that there are situations in which abortion is the most moral option. Although the focus of the book is to provide support to those who will make or have made a similar decision, we don't cast judgment on those who choose abortion for other reasons or those who choose to carry a pregnancy to term despite a poor prenatal diagnosis. We support all parents in choosing the path that is best for them. We support ALL choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why am I here? Why is the church here? Do we still have a place in the world? What is our purpose? In an age when formerly great churches struggle to survive, baptismal pools are dry and altars empty, and the church is aging, seemingly indifferent to the next generation, we are tempted to believe we have no purpose. We are tempted to give up on living the meaningful, countercultural lives to which Christ has called us, and to give in to a world that encourages us to go with the flow. How will we respond? In his letter to the Philippians, Paul gives advice that is invaluable to the twenty-first century church. The Philippians were assembled in the middle of a corrupt, sensual society, fighting against the norms of the world around them. They were God’s representatives in a secular society, and they maintained a singular focus, vision, and purpose. In The Power of Purpose, Pastor Michael Catt walks us through this letter to the Philippians, exploring how God is still calling His church, even in the rapidly changing world of the 21 st century, to be his representatives. He is calling us to maintain a singular focus and vision. He is calling us to the power of purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wife and medical professional reflects on the loss of her husband in a series of reflections that reveal the emotional stages of grief and healing. Although grief and loss are universal human conditions, the idea of losing those we love is still greatly feared, largely undiscussed, and certainly not prepared for. It is no wonder people feel alone and isolated in their feelings and thoughts when loss comes to them. Longtime nurse and Red Cross volunteer Susan Beth Hassmiller is no stranger to death. Not only has she experienced the suffering of death alongside her patients, but she was blindsided by the physical and emotional toll of loss in her personal life when her husband was fatally injured in an accident. Resetting is written in a daily diary format in which Susan opens a very private window to the actual feelings and thoughts she lived through during her grief process. Raw and gripping, Resetting reveals a profound understanding of the human experience of death. By sharing her perspective as a wife, widow and medical professional, Susan helps those who going through grief gain a new perspective and a greater understanding of death, while also offering ideas on how to help those who are experiencing bereavement—from words to say to providing support.

Book excerpt: My daughter Trisha left this world due to a reckless driver just one month short of her eighteenth birthday. Confusion, rage, anger, and denial became my new world. I felt alone, as if I were free falling for years. But my words are a sanctuary. My desire is to bring awareness to other parents who have lost children. My message is to convey to bereaved parents that they are not alone on this journey and their feelings are not only acceptable, but also normal. I hope to provide a forum in which those who suffer as I have can compare their feelings along with mine, can share in the same emotions I have, as we try to learn the best way to continue moving along in a world that for us can never be the same. I have had many obstacles interfere with the grieving process as I share my story, pain and anguish as therapy and solace to others.
