At first, Alex is blissfully happy. Sure, Cole seems a little jealous of her relationship with her close friend Zack, but what guy would want his girlfriend spending all her time with another boy? As the months pass, though, Alex can no longer ignore Cole's small put-downs, pinches, or increasingly violent threats. As Alex struggles to come to terms with the sweet boyfriend she fell in love with and the boyfriend whose "love" she no longer recognizes, she is forced to choose -- between her "true love" and herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a brilliant new talent, comes a sharp and sensual novel set in a decaying and unromanticized Philippines. In the little city of Donostia, bad news travels fast. So when 16-year-old Naia is found in an illicit pornography video, the tight-knit community is outraged. They want answers. The finger of blame soon points to Narita, Naia’s absentee mother, for putting career ahead of duty. Now Narita is back from Manila and must face her past and the memories of a life she fled. In search of the answers to her daughter's scandal, she follows a trail of evidence to reveal a web of family secrets, corruption, prejudice and the barriers of social class. At its heart, Sweet Haven is a story of a family buffeted by an ailing and intransigent nation, of the simple and bitter ways by which a family falls apart, and the brave leaps they can take to put themselves back together. Sharp-witted, keenly observant, with a passion for the rich tragic-comedy of life, Lakambini Sitoy takes on the everyday complacencies that can shatter a life – or save it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal anthropological work on the paradoxical relationship between human consciousness and the environment This book asks an age-old question about the relationship between human consciousness and the environment: How do we think about our own thoughts and actions? How can we transcend the exigencies of daily life? How can we achieve sufficient distance from our own everyday realities to think and act more sustainably? To address these questions, Michael R. Dove draws on the results of decades of research in South and Southeast Asia on how local cultures have circumvented the “curse of consciousness”—the paradox that we cannot completely comprehend the ecosystem of which we are part. He distills from his ethnographic, ecological, and historical research three principles: perspectivism (seeing oneself from outside oneself), metamorphosis (becoming something that one is not), and mimesis (copying something that one is not), which help a society to transcend the hubris and myopia of everyday existence and achieve greater insight into its ecosystem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Civil War's toll mounted, an antiquated medical system faced a deluge of sick and wounded soldiers. In response, the United States created a national care system primarily funded and regulated by the federal government. When New Haven, Connecticut, was chosen as the site for a new military hospital, Pliny Adams Jewett, next in line to become chief of surgery at Yale, sacrificed his private practice and eventually his future in New Haven to serve as chief of staff of the new thousand-bed Knight U.S. General Hospital. The "War Governor," William Buckingham, personally financed hospital construction while supporting needy soldiers and their families. He appointed state agents to scour battlefields and hospitals to ensure his state's soldiers got the best care while encouraging their transfer to the hospital in New Haven. This history of the hospital's construction and operation during the war discusses the state of medicine at the time as well as the administrative side of providing care to sick and wounded soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightfully witty, provocative book, literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that not having read a book need not be an impediment to having an interesting conversation about it. (In fact, he says, in certain situations reading the book is the worst thing you could do.) Using examples from such writers as Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and Umberto Eco, he describes the varieties of "non-reading"-from books that you've never heard of to books that you've read and forgotten-and offers advice on how to turn a sticky social situation into an occasion for creative brilliance. Practical, funny, and thought-provoking, How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read-which became a favorite of readers everywhere in the hardcover edition-is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them.

Book excerpt: A BITTER HEART begins with tea and sympathy in the aftermath of tragedy. As with the author's BETWEEN BOY AND MAN, readers find themselves falling through a cracked social veneer into the characters' turbulent inner lives. Students Rob and Kate, and her mother, find love and trust replaced by guilt and resentment. The moral predicaments that follow are set principally in a superbly realised Manchester. Tension builds as we read to discover what fateful - and fatal- decisions are made. Assumed values are tested to breaking point. Who will most suffer the pain of moral isolation? A BITTER HEART is a story of great drive and serious interest, an engrossing and page turning read that leaves one afterwards still reflecting on its rich pattern of meaning.

But watching her friends find love reminds her of the man who left her behind. Romance isn’t worth the pain; she’ll stick with business. Then she discovers Marcus Bank, her wealthiest client, is supporting criminal activity. Sam drops them immediately and loses her income, her community’s support, and everything she fought so hard to build. Even worse, the only person who can help her is the man who abandoned her. A man conflicted Trevor Mills sails the world with the US Navy, haunted by the memory of the woman he had to leave behind. A life-changing injury drives him from the service into a new desk job with the FBI in the DC area. The city’s noise, traffic and people are a constant reminder that he lost the perfect life and love. Then the FBI needs an undercover agent in Marcus, Montana, forcing Trevor to return and face the woman he’d never stopped loving. Sam hates him, but needs to bring the criminals threatening their town to justice. As the danger intensifies, Sam and Trevor can’t deny their attraction. Will confronting their painful past help Sam and Trevor survive the present and build a future together, or tear them apart forever?
