Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1877 edition. Excerpt: ... nor would the Law of God be, as I have observed, the adequate rule of the Conscience, if any thing else should oblige in any other way than by its influence), yet they differ in themselves not only in species, by reason of the diversity of the matter, but in degree likewise, as to the power of obliging. Some of these are. constantly binding, and either receive their obligation from the power of another (such are Human Laws, the commands of Parents, Masters, and the like); or their obligation arises from the free choice of the will, as vows, oaths, contracts, promises, &c. Others oblige only by accident, and cursorily as it were, as the exigence of time, place, and other circumstances require. Of this nature is the law, or reason, of avoiding scandal or offence. 3. The method I propose requires that I should begin with the first class of these things, namely, with Human Laws. And what I have to say on the extent of their obligatory power may properly be reduced to these two questions, --First, Whether Human Laws oblige the Conscience? Secondly, How far they are obligatory! The determination of most of the particular cases will fall chiefly under the last inquiry, and, God willing, shall be explained in the course of these Prelections. At present I shall dwell only upon the first, namely, Whether Human Laws oblige the Conscience? The subject of this question will give us little trouble. The Lex of the Latins (whether it was called so from legendo, i. e. from choosing in an active sense, as Cicero supposed, because a lawgiver should make choice of what he judges most useful for the community; or, as others will have it, from legendo in a passive acceptation, because laws, as soon as they were made, were engraved in tables of brass, or...

It includes entries on philosophers, problems, terms, historical periods, subjects and the cultural context of Renaissance Philosophy. Furthermore, it covers Latin, Arabic, Jewish, Byzantine and vernacular philosophy, and includes entries on the cross-fertilization of these philosophical traditions. A unique feature of this encyclopedia is that it does not aim to define what Renaissance philosophy is, rather simply to cover the philosophy of the period between 1300 and 1650.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rev. Vigo Auguste Demant (1893-1983) was a significant theologian and social commentator of the first half of the twentieth century. This book contains his up-until-now unpublished Gifford Lectures, in which Demant provides cultural analysis as he attempts to address why humanity struggles so much with modernity and living in the contemporary world. The lectures have additional notes and commentary to make them comprehensible, since not all of them are complete. The first chapters set Demant in his context and the final section provides assessment of both his ideas and his impact. Although Demant died in 1983, his ideas continue to prove influential to thinkers and theologians today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging volume advances our understanding of law and empire in the early modern world. Distinguished contributors expose new dimensions of legal pluralism in the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Ottoman empires. In-depth analyses probe such topics as the shifting legal privileges of corporations, the intertwining of religious and legal thought, and the effects of clashing legal authorities on sovereignty and subjecthood. Case studies show how a variety of individuals engage with the law and shape the contours of imperial rule. The volume reaches from Peru to New Zealand to Europe to capture the varieties and continuities of legal pluralism and to probe the analytic power of the concept of legal pluralism in the comparative study of empires. For legal scholars, social scientists, and historians, Legal Pluralism and Empires, 1500-1850 maps new approaches to the study of empires and the global history of law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Origins of Anglican Moral Theology Peter H. Sedgwick shows how Anglican moral theology has a distinctive ethos, drawing on Scripture, Augustine, the medieval theologians (Abelard, Aquinas and Scotus), and the great theologians of the Reformation, such as Luther and Calvin. A series of studies of Tyndale, Perkins, Hooker, Sanderson and Taylor shows the flourishing of this discipline from 1530 to 1670. Anglican moral theology has a coherence which enables it to engage in dialogue with other Christian theological traditions and to present a deeply pastoral but intellectually rigorous theological position. This book is unique because the origins of Anglican moral theology have never been studied in depth before.
