This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this series of books the authors have transcribed all of the articles they have found in the Alcona County Review (Harrisville, Michigan) covering births, marriages, divorces, bigamies, and deaths. In almost all cases the transcriptions include every word in the articles. Articles leading up to an event (such as marriage application and bridal party) as well as the event itself (description of the wedding) are included when found. The Review began publication in April 1877, and this volume contains the articles found in the issues from January 1910 through December 1919. Also included are several articles from the Alcona County Herald for this period. Many articles were missing information that would be of interest to the genealogist or local historian, such as the name of a newborn child, a mother's maiden name, or the cemetery in which an individual was interred. The authors have attempted to locate that information and have included it outside the text box containing the transcription of the article. Also included is an index of all of the principals in the articles, including as many maiden names as the authors could find.

Book excerpt: For much of the nineteenth century, the nervous system was a medical mystery, inspiring scientific studies and exciting great public interest. Because of this widespread fascination, the nerves came to explain the means by which mind and body related to each other. By the 1830s, the nervous system helped Americans express the consequences on the body, and for society, of major historical changes. Literary writers, including Nathaniel Hawthorne and Harriet Beecher Stowe, used the nerves as a metaphor to re-imagine the role of the self amidst political, social and religious tumults, including debates about slavery and the revivals of the Second Great Awakening. Representing the 'romance' of the nervous system and its cultural impact thoughtfully and, at times, critically, the fictional experiments of this century helped construct and explore a neurological vision of the body and mind. Murison explains the impact of neurological medicine on nineteenth-century literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.

Book excerpt: What could an omnipresent and seemingly omnipotent entity want with a humble pot-healer? Or with the dozens of other odd creatures it has lured to Plowman's Planet? And if the Glimmung is a god, are its ends positive or malign? Combining quixotic adventure, spine-chilling horror, and deliriously paranoid theology, Galactic Pot-Healer is a uniquely Dickian voyage to alternate worlds of the imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains marriage and death notices abstracted from microfilm copies of newspapers available at the New York State Library. Information has been abstracted from the Havana Journal (1853-1887), the Watkins Democrat (1878-1900), the Watkins Express (1871-1900), and the Watkins Review (1896-1900). These newspapers were all published in Schuyler County, New York, but they include many notices for people living in the nearby counties of Seneca, Cayuga, Yates, Tompkins, Tioga, Chemung, and Steuben, as well as for people who moved out of state. Vital records were recorded by the Town Clerk in New York State beginning in 1885, however not all marriages and deaths were recorded until 1906 when it became mandatory. This book also contains difficult-to-find vital records that pre-date 1885. A surname index adds to the value of this work. J3173HB - $26.00
