Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on traumatic birth injuries, predominantly of the skull and brain, as well as hemorrhagic and ischemic disorders of cerebral circulation in fetuses and newborns, providing information on each condition’s classification, incidence, etiology and pathogenesis, pathomorphology, clinic, diagnostics, prognosis, and complications. It discusses the configuration (molding) of the head, venous congestion, displacements of cranial bones, ruptures of the cerebellar tentorium during labor, and the compression of the skull and brain damage caused by obstetric operations and asynclitic insertion of the head, while also describing the importance of the periosteal stagnation of the skull to assess the delivery and explanation of tentorium tears. Intracranial hemorrhages are considered in detail, taking into account the role of the traumatic factor in their occurrence and hypoxic-ischemic brain lesions (periventricular leukomalacia, selective neuronal necrosis, multicystic encephalomalacia, etc.). Lastly, it offers the world’s first explanation of why tentorium tears occur most frequently in the left half, providing an original classification of damaged tentoria, subarachnoid and intraventricular hemorrhages, and the degree of configuration of the head in childbirth. Given the depth and breadth of its coverage, the book offers an essential resource for neonatologists, obstetricians-gynecologists, perinatologists, pediatric neurologists, pathologists, pediatricians, forensic experts and neuroimaging professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central nervous system trauma, which encompasses stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, head injury, and spinal cord injury, is a leading cause of death in developed countries. In the search for underlying mechanisms, membrane involvement has been the common link. This fourth volume in the Membrane-Linked Diseases series is therefore dedicated to research on CNS trauma. Focusing on the mechanism of membrane damage, Central Nervous System Trauma: Research Techniques presents a variety of experimental techniques to study the mechanism of CNS trauma. Animal and tissue culture models provide the bulk of the research findings in this area. Possible pharmacological interventions are analyzed. This volume offers numerous illustrative examples, including full color figures. This book serves as a valuable resource for students and researchers, assisting in the comprehension of current trends in CNS trauma and helping to stimulate the discovery of new research areas.

Book excerpt: Witness the dramatic unfolding of the human form in all its potential. Join John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M., as he takes you from the union of sperm and egg through the development of the complex circuitry that makes up the human brain. You'll learn about birth, growth, function and dysfunction, and how all these aspects influence physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For easy reference, he also maps out the central nervous system and the functions of all its parts. You'll discover problems that can alter brain and spinal cord development in each of the first eight weeks of pregnancy, and then monthly right through delivery. A Brain Is Born details some of the insults and injuries that can affect the newborn and commonsense ways to avoid them. Perhaps most importantly, he provides an outline of simple physical tests that can help determine the status of a baby's nervous system, including a step-by-step process for treating potential problems through the use of CranioSacral Therapy and related therapeutic approaches. This breakthrough book empowers parents with knowledge to help them make practical decisions concerning the health of their children.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that the functionally significant body of knowledge for a given medical specialty changes radically every 8 years. New specialties and "sub-specialization" are occurring at approximately an equal rate. Historically, established journals have not been able either to absorb this increase in publishable material or to extend their readership to the new specialists. International and national meetings, symposia and seminars, workshops and newsletters, successfully bring to the attention of physi cians within developing specialties what is occurring, but generally only in demonstration form without providing historical perspective, patho anatomical correlates, or extensive discussion. Page and time limitations oblige the authors to present only the essence of their material. Pediatric neurosurgery is an example of a specialty that has developed during the past 15 years and over this period, neurosurgeons have ob tained special training in pediatric neurosurgery and then dedicated them selves primarily to its practice. Centers, Chairs, and educational pro grams have been established as groups of neurosurgeons in different countries throughout the world organized themselves respectively into national and international societies for pediatric neurosurgery. These events were both preceded and followed by specialized courses, national and international journals, and ever-increasing clinical and investigative studies into all aspects of surgically treatable diseases of the child's ner vous system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of sudden or unexplained death of children represents a unique medical and forensic area of study. Children have unique anatomic and functional characteristics that must be recognized and understood by the medical investigator. Further complicating this process is the fact that the anatomic structure, composition and function of various organs and organ systems in the pediatric population change throughout the developmental stages of childhood. The disease processes, reactions to trauma and risk factors for accidental death and homicide change from infancy through adolescence. Forensic Pathology of Infancy and Childhood provides an authoritative, comprehensive reference text devoted to the medicolegal investigation of sudden unexpected death in children. With contributions from internationally renowned experts, individual chapters focus on specific unique causes and organ systems with detailed accounts of the changes in fatal diseases, risk factors of causes of sudden death, and responses to fatal trauma that occur as a child grows from neonatal stage through infancy, toddlerhood, childhood and adolescence. This text is an essential reference resource for forensic pathologists, medical examiner offices, pediatric pathologists, pediatric hospitals, anatomic pathologists and those in training as well as those in related legal professions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.
