This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LES FERROFLUIDES SONT DES SUSPENSIONS COLLOIDALES DE NANOPARTICLES MONODOMAINES MAGNETIQUES DONT LES GRAINS, SYNTHETISES CHIMIQUEMENT, SONT CONSTITUES DE FERRITE. ILS PORTENT UN MOMENT MAGNETIQUE ET SONT BIREFRINGENTS DU FAIT D'UNE ANISOTROPIE OPTIQUE INTRINSEQUE. UNE DENSITE SUPERFICIELLE DE CHARGE PERMET DE LES DISPERSER DANS UN SOLVANT POLAIRE. L'ETAT DE STABILITE DE LA SOLUTION DEPEND DU PH. POUR UNE DENSITE SUPERFICIELLE DE CHARGE MAXIMALE, UN SOL STABLE EST OBTENU. POUR DES DENSITES DE CHARGES PLUS FAIBLES, NOUS OBSERVONS LA FORMATION D'UN GEL THIXOTROPE PUIS UNE FLOCULATION REVERSIBLE AU VOISINAGE DU POINT DE CHARGE NULLE. UN MODELE DE POTENTIEL D'INTERACTION DE PAIRES (DLVO) EXPLIQUE DANS L'ENSEMBLE LE DIAGRAMME DE PHASE DE CES SOLUTIONS EN FONCTION DU PH. NOUS REALISONS PREMIEREMENT UNE ETUDE MAGNETO-OPTIQUE STATIQUE DE SOLS STABLES QUI NOUS PERMET DE MONTRER QUE, POUR DES PARTICULES A BASE DE -FE 2O 3, LA PRESENCE D'UNE COUCHE DE SPINS DESORDONNES EN SURFACE EST A L'ORIGINE D'UNE ANISOTROPIE OPTIQUE UNIAXIALE, CONDUISANT A UNE BIREFRINGENCE POSITIVE. POUR DES GRAINS A BASE DE NIFE 2O 4, CETTE COUCHE SUPERFICIELLE A UN ROLE IMPORTANT DANS L'AIMANTATION GLOBALE DU MATERIAU. CES NANOPARTICULES SONT UTILISEES COMME SONDES RHEOLOGIQUES DE LEUR MILIEU PORTEUR. TROIS EXPERIENCES DYNAMIQUES DE BIREFRINGENCE MAGNETIQUE SONT REALISEES AVEC TROIS TYPES DE CHAMPS MAGNETIQUES : CHAMP STATIQUE MODULE TRANSVERSALEMENT, ALTERNATIF OU PULSE. SELON LA HIERARCHIE RESPECTIVE DE L'ENERGIE MAGNETIQUE, DE L'ENERGIE D'ANISOTROPIE ET DE L'ENERGIE D'AGITATION THERMIQUE DES PARTICULES, ON OBSERVE TROIS REGIMES AVEC CHACUN UN TEMPS CARACTERISTIQUE PROPRE. LE MONTAGE EN CHAMP PULSE EST AUSSI UTILISE POUR EXPLORER LES PROPRIETES DE LA PHASE GEL THIXOTROPE EN FONCTION DU TEMPS ET DU PH. DEUX EFFETS ANTAGONISTES PARTICIPENT AU PROCESSUS DE GELIFICATION, L'AUGMENTATION DE LA TAILLE DES AGGLOMERATS LIBRES DE TOURNER DANS LA SOLUTION ET LEUR PIEGEAGE PROGRESSIF SUR UN AGREGAT DE TAILLE INFINIE.

DEUX TYPES D'ETUDES EXPERIMENTALES ONT ETE ABORDEES: UNE EXPERIENCE DE DIFFUSION RAYLEIGH FORCEE LIEE AUX TRANSFERTS TRANSLATIONNELS DE MASSE ET DE CHALEUR DANS LE COLLOIDE, UNE MESURE DE VORTICITE QUI SONDE, DANS UN ECOULEMENT, LE MOUVEMENT DE ROTATION DES PARTICULES COLLOIDALES PAR DES METHODES OPTIQUES DE BIREFRINGENCE MAGNETIQUE. A. DIFFUSION RAYLEIGH FORCEE: LA MODULATION SPATIALE D'INTENSITE LUMINEUSE DES FRANGES D'INTERFERENCES DU DISPOSITIF DE RAYLEIGH FORCE INDUIT UNE MODULATION SPATIALE PERIODIQUE DE TEMPERATURE ET UNE MODULATION SPATIALE DE CONCENTRATION EN PARTICULES. L'ETUDE DE LA DIFFRACTION AU PREMIER ORDRE D'UN FAISCEAU LASER SONDE A PERMIS: L'EVALUATION DU COEFFICIENT SORET DU COLLOIDE, LIE AUX PROCESSUS DE THERMODIFFUSION QUI DONNENT LIEU A LA CONSTRUCTION DU RESEAU ; LA MESURE DU COEFFICIENT DE DIFFUSION DE TRANSLATION DES PARTICULES, ASSOCIE A LA RELAXATION DE CE RESEAU EN PRESENCE ET EN L'ABSENCE DE CHAMP MAGNETIQUE APPLIQUE. B. MESURE LOCALE DE VORTICITE PAR BIREFRINGENCE MAGNETO-OPTIQUE: LES NANOPARTICULES MAGNETIQUES D'UN FERROFLUIDE SONT DILUEES EN FAIBLE QUANTITE DANS UN LIQUIDE PROTEUR OU ELLES SONT STABLES AU PLAN COLLOIDAL. ON MONTRE ICI QU'IL EST POSSIBLE D'UTILISER CES PARTICULES OPTIQUEMENT ANISOTROPES COMME SONDE HYDRODYNAMIQUE LOCALE D'UN ECOULEMENT DU LIQUIDE PORTEUR. CE TRAVAIL PRESENTE UNE MESURE LOCALE DE VORTICITE PAR DETERMINATION D'UNE BIREFRINGENCE OPTIQUE INDUITE PAR UN CHAMP MAGNETIQUE APPLIQUE. L'ORIENTATION DES PARTICULES SOUS L'EFFET CONJOINT DE LA VORTICITE LOCALE ET DU CHAMP APPLIQUE EST MESUREE EN DIRECTION ET EN AMPLITUDE DANS TROIS TYPES D'EXPERIENCES EN ROTATION SOLIDE: EN CHAMP STATIQUE, EN CHAMP ALTERNATIF ET EN CHAMP PULSE

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference on liquid crystals of one- and two-dimensional order and their applications is the third in a series of European conferences devoted mainly to smectic liquid crystals. Its purpose was to bring together people working on the frontiers of the field of liquid crystals. Ordinary nematic liquid crystals were left out in order to limit the size of the meeting. The number of registered participants still reached 148. The conference shed new light on the classification of smectic mesophases, especially through the interaction of the Halle (GDR) and Hull (England) groups. It saw lively discussions on the famous blue phase of cholesterics. There were illuminating presentations on lyotropic nematic liquid crystals, on reentrant nematics, mesomorphic polymer phases, and related subjects. Much room was given to bilayers, monolayers, and interfaces, mostly to further the use of the concepts and methods of liquid crystal physics in exploring bio membranes. Other topics were device applications of smectic and cholesteric liquid crystals and nematic polymers, both of which hold promise of techno logical breakthroughs, apart from their scientific interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the classic text incorporates the many advances in knowledge about liquid crystals that have taken place since its initial publication in 1974. Entirely new chapters describe the types and properties of liquid crystals in terms of both recently discovered phases and current insight into the nature of local order and isotropic-to-nematic transition. There is an extensive discussion of the symmetrical, macroscopic, dynamic, and defective properties of smectics and columnar phases, with emphasis on order-of-magnitude considerations, all illustrated with numerous descriptions of experimental arrangements. The final chapter is devoted to phase transitions in smectics, including the celebrated analogy between smectic A and superconductors. This new version's topicality and breadth of coverage will ensure that it remains an indispensable guide for researchers and graduate students in mechanics and engineering, and in chemical, solid state, and statistical physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide an introduction to the practical use of mobile NMR at a level as basic as the operation of a smart phone. Each description follows the same didactic pattern: introduction, basic theory, pulse sequences and parameters, beginners-level measurements, advanced-level measurements, and data processing. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most popular method for chemists to analyze molecular structures while Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool for medical doctors that provides high-contrast images of biological tissue depicting the brain function and the beating heart. In both applications large super-conducting magnets are employed which magnetize atomic nuclei of an object positioned inside the magnet. Their circulating motion is interrogated by radio-frequency waves. Depending on the operating mode, the frequency spectrum provides the chemist with molecular information, the medical doctor with anatomic images, while the materials scientist is interested in NMR relaxation parameters, which scale with material properties and determine the contrast in magnetic resonance images. Recent advances in magnet technology led to a variety of small permanent magnets, by which NMR spectra, images, and relaxation parameters can be measured with mobile and low-cost instruments.
