With the help of his sympathetic mother, he gently wraps the injured bird and takes it home. Wistful and uplifting in true Bob Graham fashion, here is a tale of possibility — and of the souls who never doubt its power.

Book excerpt: This posthumous novel from acclaimed author David Budbill tells the story of The Man Who Lives Alone in the Mountains. As winter descends on his idyllic home, the man encounters a bird with a broken wing, sending him into a poetic and profound meditation on solitude, friendship, and the unstoppable march of time. In the deep woods of Vermont, The Man Who Lives Alone in the Mountains exists in solitude and simplicity. His days are spent caring for his garden and observing the birds and creatures that visit his home. His nights are spent in a contemplative world of music, poetry, letter writing, and, most importantly, bird watching. As November arrives and The Man prepares for winter, he notices an injured bird, shiny and black, holding his own among bullying blue jays. He is drawn to the bird’s spirit of survival and freedom and names it Broken Wing. Since his only neighbors are a couple of hostile brothers and their bird-hunting cat, Broken Wing becomes a source of inspiration—and a friend. As fall changes to winter and back to spring, The Man’s dreams of Broken Wing give way to meditations on the peaks and valleys of life, the passage of time, and the poetry of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds Without Wings traces the fortunes of one small community in southwest Turkey (Anatolia) in the early part of the last century—a quirky community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries and where friendship, even love, has transcended religious differences. But with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the onset of the Great War, the sweep of history has a cataclysmic effect on this peaceful place: The great love of Philothei, a Christian girl of legendary beauty, and Ibrahim, a Muslim shepherd who courts her from near infancy, culminates in tragedy and madness; Two inseparable childhood friends who grow up playing in the hills above the town suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle; and Rustem Bey, a wealthy landlord, who has an enchanting mistress who is not what she seems. Far away from these small lives, a man of destiny who will come to be known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is emerging to create a country from the ruins of an empire. Victory at Gallipoli fails to save the Ottomans from ultimate defeat and, as a new conflict arises, Muslims and Christians struggle to survive, let alone understand, their part in the great tragedy that will reshape the whole region forever.

Book excerpt: A lovely bookstore owner asked me why she should read this book? I explained that in writing this book, I undertook a purposeful investigation leading where angels (and all good Baptists) fear to tread. It was during this attempt at explanation the picture formed in my mind of addressing an auditorium full of women. My opening remark to them is: 'Women hunger and thirst for romance. What is it that men want?" The entire audience responds with a resounding chorus in unison with one word: 'SEX!" I then ask: 'No, really ladies, what do men really want?" Again, with a single voice the chorus returns, loudly: 'SEX!" Seeing that I am getting nowhere fast I decide to try a new tack. I ask: 'Please, ladies, as a Romantic, a Poet, what do I, as a man, want?" Back it comes: 'SEX!" There is a definite mind set at work here. Okay, honestly, as a Romantic, a Poet, what do I want from a woman: SEX! Satisfied? But my admission of common guilt is only true to a point. Believe it or not, ladies, some men like myself want romance as much as you do. It is in searching for this elusive thing that I have discovered so much that betrays you ladies in the very areas you are supposed to excel in the romance department. I treat the causes and results of such betrayal in this book.

Book Synopsis The Humane Gardener by : Nancy Lawson
Download or read book The Humane Gardener written by Nancy Lawson and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book Synopsis Flying with Broken Wings by : Jr. Robert Smith
Download or read book Flying with Broken Wings written by Jr. Robert Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of broken people burdened by the pain of unresolved conflicts, mourning unrealized dreams. It matters not if you're African American, Hispanic, a person of color from the Caribbean or elsewhere in the world, Asian, White, single, married, affluent, whether you live on a fixed income, reside in an upscale hamlet or community plagued by social and economic neglect. It matters not if you were raised by a single mother or father, or achieved academic success or failed to complete the tenth grade. So many brothers and sisters are among the walking wounded. Men and women tortured, traumatized by past and present events in their lives that have cast a dark shadow over their sense of internal security and healthy perspective on who they are as human beings. My thesis is this: every person, regardless of the circumstances of his or her life, has value and worth. Simply stated, you are somebody because of your uniqueness. Every human being has talents, special abilities, and temperament that benefit a community, family, or society. This book is not aimed specifically at faith communities, whether Christian, Jewish, or disciples of Islam, though on a visceral level, I hope my words touch brothers and sisters trying to fit into a group to lift their self-image, brothers and sisters who heard negativity in the voices of their childhood repeated ad nauseam: "You are nothing. You're not as smart as your brother or sister."

When she finds a group of friends with the same glass-like, color-changing eyes and streaks of blue hair, she learns she is Cerulean. The divine gift leads to dangerous realizations about the doorways between spiritual realms and the Anderson family tree's dark, twisted roots. She is a descendant of one of the most powerful witches ever to walk between two worlds. With demons hunting her to break a curse placed by the witch, life is far from normal for young Abby. Angels are hovering nearby, and one is even breaking the rules and crossing boundaries. At seventeen, she thought she would spend her first year after high school trying to figure out life, but instead, Abby is trying to save her soul; once she figures out where it belongs, of course.
