Expressly stated that the bird was only seen, the Specimen has been secured; this of course not applying to such birds as are easily identified on the wing. In compiling the number of a set of eggs, the majority of notes are my own; these include all nests with a completed complement of eggs, whether collected or not, and also such nests as held young birds from which none had own. In some of our commoner Species the number is quite large, and shows the variation in a set much better than the usual four or five, sometimes three or six. I have omitted mention of second nestings 3 a good many of our birds nest twice and some three times; but except in one or two cases I could not identify the same pair of birds, and as nests in all stages, from started to build to birds ready to y, can be found any day in the height of the season for most of our commoner Species, I only give extreme nesting dates, preferring such as record eggs where possible. A list of the works and publications to which I have made reference is appended. The nomenclature followed, as also the number given, is that of the American Ornithologists Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of a Maryland Farm: A Local Study of Economic Ornithology The cultivated area is a level, alluvial bench extending back from the river a half mile to foothills (pl. III, fig. It is divided into five approximately equal lots, two along the southern or woodland boundary and three along the northern or river boundary. A straight line of fence parallel to the river separates the three river lots from the two inland lots. The river tract is rectangular, about three times as long as broad, and extends east - that is, up river several hundred yards farther than the inland tract. A bushy draining ditch, which will be designated throughout this paper by the local name Persimmon Branch, stretches lengthwise through the middle of this area from the calamus swamp to the lower or southwest corner of the farm, where it empties into the river by a swampy, timbered outlet. Persimmon Branch is joined not far from its river mouth by a tributary - locally known as Partridge Branch - that drains the western inland lot. The other inland lot has no ditch, and part of it is often wet; the side toward the swamp washes badly during heavy rains. It has been found convenient to designate these lots by numbers, the three 'along the river being numbered 1, 2, and 3 and the others 4 and 5 (see map, Pl. II). The farm meets the river in a precipitous, tree-fringed bluff from 20 to 30 feet high, which at low tide has a strip of sandy shore (pl. IV, fig. All the buildings but one stand at intervals on a road running along the brink of the bluff. In the middle of the river front of lot 1 are the house, surrounded by a yard with a paling fence and shaded by great locusts, and a horse barn with its corn house (see Pl. I, frontis piece, fig. In lot 2, touching the line dividing it from lot 1, is a cow barn, and at the middle of lot 2 is a negro cabin. A storage barn stands several hundred yards south of the cabin, at the northwest cor ner of lot 4 (see map, Pl. II). Of a district, a knowledge of the topography and other physical conditions is important. The region in question includes all of Madison county, and is, roughly speaking, in the center of New York state. The district is traversed by rather deep fertile valleys seldom exceeding a mile in breadth and having a general trend of north and south. The north-eastern boundary upon Oneida county forms a part of the divide between the headwaters of the Mohawk and Susquehanna river systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Common Birds of West Virginia By feeding and housing birds we may increase the pleasure we have in seeing our feathered friends about us. Their songs bring cheer: their devotion to their young ones teaches a lesson of parental love. It is said in the Good Book that not a sparrow falls without note being taken. How much care are we taking to make the little bird's life easier that he may render more efficient service to us? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of South Dakota There is perhaps no State ia the Union where bird study is more perplexing than in South Dakota. From east to west the State embraces birds of woods, prairie and mountains. The range of many birds is constantly moving westward, and this causes variation in the migrating routes of many species. The Black Hills, lying only a little apart from the Rocky Mountains, are apt to be visited occasionally by western species. From south to north, likewise, both trees and latitude affect the bird problem. The Missouri River with its wooded banks and ravines, traversing the middle of the State, provides conditions which attract some species farther north than they would otherwise come. But for this fact we probably would not have the beautiful Western Blue Grosbeak within our borders. Birds from farther east and south also, such as Cardinals and Wood Thrushes, follow the growing trees into South Dakota. Many birds are found in the southern part of the State which are never seen in the northern part; and some birds which form erly nested in South Dakota no longer do so. So numerous, therefore, are the changes going on in bird life within the State that observations which were made a few years ago may not be accurate today and observations made to day may not be accurate tomorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Kansas City Region There has been no list of the birds of the Kansas City region which local students of birds could consult. It is hoped that the present summary of an extensive study of the avifauna of Jackson County, Missouri, and vicinity, will be of service to local nature-study classes, and to bird students in general. It is hoped also that it may stimulate that scientific interest in bird-study which is an active and powerful incentive to the growing movement for bird protection. No attempt has been made to furnish a means of identifying birds, since so many standard works covering this ground are available. A list of desirable books is given in the text. The nomenclature used is that of the American Ornithologists' Union Che-ck List. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of New Hampshire In the following pages an attempt has been made to bring to gether a list of the species of birds known to have occurred with in the State of New Hampshire during historic times, together with a general account of their distribution, faunal position, times of migration, and, in case of the rarer species, a detailed list of the known instance of occurrence. The present list can be at best only preliminary, and there remains much yet to be done in 'the way of obtaining more complete information as to the de tails of distribution and migration, and particularly so in the case of the water birds. In addition to much that has been already recorded in many books and periodicals, a considerable body of unpublished facts relative to the birds of the State is here included, based not only on the writer's personal observations, but also on those of a num ber of ornithologists who have contributed most generously of their notes, and to whom due acknowledgment is made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Birds of New York This little book is not expected to give everyone a complete history of the birds of this state. To do so would require an immense volume. But it is designed to bring to the attention of the reader the most common, the most interesting and the most valuable birds and to create an interest which it is hoped will be the means of starting many on a more extended study of our most interesting fauna. In the last few pages is a quite complete list of New York birds and concise data in regard to their occurrence. As might be expected considering the size and location of the state, a very great many species occur or have been taken here. The sandy beaches and mud flats of Long Island furnish an ideal retreat or resting place for all sorts of water fowl and shore birds. The Carolinian Area of the Austral Zone extends to Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley; hence a great many southern species occur, species that otherwise would be very unusual in this latitude, such as Kentucky, Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers. Book excerpt: From the editor of the nation's premier birding magazine, a no-nonsense, no-fluff quick guide to the birds you see every day. Of all the classic American pastimes, perhaps none is as widely accessible as watching birds. Our unusually vast, diverse environmental landscape supports fascinating species and variations exclusive to each region of the country. While birders often spend their efforts in search of the rarest creatures, some of the most beautiful and intriguing birds are the ones that frequent our backyards (or nearby) daily. For that reason, where other, larger volumes focus on bird types that the casual observer is never likely to encounter, Southern Birds concisely celebrates those species living under our very noses. Written by Bill Thompson III, the editor and co-publisher of Bird Watcher's Digest, this portable 5"x8" book contains the same variety of entertaining and informative entries that make Bird Watcher's Digest the nation's most popular birding magazine. You'll find profiles of the 55 most common birds in the South, complete with large color photos, gender-specific physical descriptions, nesting and feeding information, bird call particulars, and interesting stories about each species. Thompson also introduces the reader to the basics of bird watching: essential gear, bird-friendly food and plantings, housing tips, and observational techniques. This guide covers North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. Look for our other backyard bird guides covering the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, and West regions of the United States.
