Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life in Labrador In a book, sketch, or series of sketches, one of the last things to be written - and often one of the last to be printed - is the introduction. Why, then, it should be so invariably placed first is a question for the causalist. I shall vary the usual proceedings in such cases, and, writing my introduction last, shall both print and place it last. The subject of the present and last number of Bird Life in Labrador is very briefly stated. In 1875, the writer made a Summer excursion to Labrador, remaining there two months, traveling chiefly within a radius of sixty miles southwest and ten miles northeast of Bonne Esperance. In 1880, he visited the coast in September and remained until the following September, calling at nearly every harbor of importance from Mingan to Red Bay. In 1882, a third exploring party continued the work of the two previous trips, as far as Fox Harbor, St. Lewis Sound. Other trips to portions of these same grounds have been made, and much new material gained, but not beyond St. Lewis Sound, as above mentioned. When the sketches that have just appeared in the American Field were written, after returning from the trip in 1882, I had never seen any account whatever of the birds of this region, saving from occasional glimpses in odd volumes of the works of Audubon, and not all of these. I cannot, therefore, be charged with literary piracy, so often urged upon writers of any particular subject or region. To prove the above fact, I am prepared to take upon me the most solemn obligation that can be required of any author. I make this statement simply as a precautionary measure of self-protection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little White Bird: Or Adventures in Kensington Gardens Sometimes the little boy who calls me father brings me an invitation from his mother: "I shall be so pleased if you will come and see me," and I always reply in some such words as these: "Dear madam, I decline." And if David asks why I decline, I explain that it is because I have no desire to meet the woman. "Come this time, father," he urged lately, "for it is her birthday, and she is twenty-six," which is so great an age to David, that I think he fears she cannot last much longer. "Twenty-six, is she, David?" I replied. "Tell her I said she looks more." I had my delicious dream that night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Book Synopsis The Labrador Coast by : Alpheus Spring Packard
Download or read book The Labrador Coast written by Alpheus Spring Packard and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Labrador Coast: A Journal of Two Summer Cruises to That Region; With Notes on Its Early Discovery, on the Eskimo, on Is Physical, Geography, Geology and Natural Hisoty The Labrador Peninsula is less known than the interior of Africa or the wastes of Siberia. Its rivers are still stocked with salmon; its inland waters are the breeding places of countless birds. Its numerous and deep fiords, and the splendid mountain scenery of the northern coast, with its Arctic icefields and thousand bergs, and the Eskimos, christianized and heathen, will never cease to tempt to this threshold of the Arctic regions the hardy explorer or the adventurous yachtsman. Though this book is mainly based on observations and collections made by the author in his early student days, it was thought that some general and standard account of the Labrador coast, its geography, its people, its fisheries, its geology, as well as its animals and plants, might be useful, even if future explorations of the great fiords and of the interior plateaux and rivers might in time result in far more complete works. The scientific results, geological and zoological, are reprinted from the Memoirs of the Boston Society of Natural History for 1867. Chapters I, II, III, and VI are reprinted by permission from the Bulletin of the American Geographical Society for 1888. Chapters IV and XIII first appeared in the American Naturalist, and Chapter Vis reprinted from Appletons' Journal.
