Book excerpt: Bird Day: How To Prepare For It This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Bird Day; How to prepare for it by Charles Almanzo Babcock In the spring of 1894 the writer's attention was attracted to the interest of the children in that part of their nature study which related to birds. Their descriptions of the appearance and habits of the birds they had observed were given with evident pleasure. They had a strong desire to tell what they had seen, not in the spirit of rivalry, but with the wish of adding to the knowledge of a subject in which all were equally interested. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Edward O. Wilson -- University Professor at Harvard, winner of two Pulitzer prizes, eloquent champion of biodiversity -- is arguably one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. His career represents both a blueprint and a challenge to those who seek to explore the frontiers of scientific understanding. Yet, until now, little has been told of his life and of the important events that have shaped his thought. In Naturalist, Wilson describes for the first time both his growth as a scientist and the evolution of the science he has helped define. He traces the trajectory of his life -- from a childhood spent exploring the Gulf Coast of Alabama and Florida to life as a tenured professor at Harvard -- detailing how his youthful fascination with nature blossomed into a lifelong calling. He recounts with drama and wit the adventures of his days as a student at the University of Alabama and his four decades at Harvard University, where he has achieved renown as both teacher and researcher. As the narrative of Wilson's life unfolds, the reader is treated to an inside look at the origin and development of ideas that guide today's biological research. Theories that are now widely accepted in the scientific world were once untested hypotheses emerging from one mans's broad-gauged studies. Throughout Naturalist, we see Wilson's mind and energies constantly striving to help establish many of the central principles of the field of evolutionary biology. The story of Wilson's life provides fascinating insights into the making of a scientist, and a valuable look at some of the most thought-provoking ideas of our time.

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Birds: Studied and Photographed From Life AN important and sometimes difficult phase in the study of bird life is to observe accurately and report without false interpretation the habits and actions of birds. The naturalist who uses the camera in the field often has the advantage of backing his observations with proof (not an unimportant thing in nature writing of to-day), and if he produces good authentic photographs, one may be quite sure they were not secured without patient waiting and a careful study of his subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of South Dakota Effort has been made in this bulletin to obtain as complete a list of South Dakota birds as possible. In all, 322 species and subspecies have been recorded. With few exceptions these are represented in the University Museum collections at Vermillion. There is perhaps no State in the Union where bird study is more perplexing than in South Dakota. From east to west the State embraces birds of woods, prairie and mountains. The range of many birds is constantly moving westward, and this causes variation in the migrating routes of many species. The Black Hills, lying only a little apart from the Rocky Mountains, are apt to be visited occasionally by western species. From south to north, likewise, both trees and latitude affect the bird problem. The Missouri River with its wooded banks and ravines, traversing the middle of the State, provides conditions which attract some species farther north than they would otherwise come. But for this fact we probably would not have the beautiful Western Blue Grosbeak within our borders. Birds from farther east and south also, such as Cardinals and Wood Thrushes, follow the growing trees into South Dakota. Many birds are found in the southern part of the State which are never seen in the northern part; and some birds which formerly nested in South Dakota no longer do so. So numerous, therefore, are the changes going on in bird life within the State that observations which were made a few years ago may not be accurate today and observations made today may not be accurate tomorrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of North Carolina, Vol. 4 The present volume, Birds of North Carolina, is a joint publication of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey, the State Audubon Society of North Carolina, and the State Museum. Mr. T.Gilbert Pearson, former Secretary of the North Carolina Audubon Society, was asked to take the supervision of the work, and, after consultation with Messrs. H. H. and C. S. Brimley, they decided on a joint authorship. The State Audubon Society of North Carolina for the study and protection of wild birds and animals authorized the preparation of the material, and appropriated the necessary funds to have prepared the original drawings and paintings with which it is illustrated. The object of this publication is to place in the hands of interested persons a book of ready reference which will be of assistance to them in acquiring further information regarding the birds of North Carolina; and also to preserve in permanent form the hitherto widely scattered data relative to the distribution and occurrence of the many rare species that have been found to occur within the borders of the State. To assist the student in identifying birds, an artificial key to the various orders, families, genera, and species of birds has been given, as well as a detailed description of each one treated. As a still further aid, the book has been somewhat more fully illustrated than is usual in works of this character. A record of the presence of a rare bird is of little scientific value unless the date and place of its appearance are noted; hence there is frequent mention in the text of the year, month, and day when birds of infrequent occurrence have been noted, together with a citation of the authorities for the statement. The volume takes up, first, a brief historical sketch of North Carolina ornithology, and an account of the work of the State Audubon Society. It has been prepared by T. Gilbert Pearson, who was the founder of the society and who for many years was its very efficient secretary. Following this is a sketch by C. S. Brimley on "Life Zones and Bird Distribution," which gives a description of the four life zones represented in North Carolina. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Six Common Birds: To Accompany Audubon Bird Charts This pamphlet is issued by the Massachusetts Audubon Soci ety, for the Protection Of Birds, to accompany its Wall Chart of colored drawings of twenty-six common birds. The objects of the society are to discourage the wearing of feathers, except those of the ostrich and domesticated fowls; to establish a Bird Day in con junction with Arbor Day in the schools; to promote the knowledge of birds in the community and to protect all wild birds and their eggs from needless destruction. The society circulates good lit erature on the subject, and accurate illustrations of birds. It seeks new members. A new member is added strength for necessary work, and is one more person interested to reform the fashion of wearing feathers of wild birds. The society's publication, Helps to Bird Study, was favorably received, and it is hoped that this leaflet and the chart will be of further assistance to teachers. The chart should be hung in a conspicuous place on the wall, so that the birds, by inviting constant examination, will become familiar. It should be used to supplement Nature work and general reading whenever convenient. The society is indebted to Mr. Ralph Hoffmann, of Belmont, Mass., for the descriptions of the birds found in this pamphlet, and for his valuable assistance in supervising the preparation of the chart. The illustrations on the chart have been especially drawn for the society by Mr. E. Knobel. The number following the common name of the bird is the number of that bird on the chart. Size of Chart, 29 x 42 inches, printed on heavy paper. Price, unmounted, backed with cloth and mounted on rollers like a map, $1. 30. If its sale indicates that it meets a need and serves to promote the public appreciation of birds, it is proposed to issue a second chart with figures of additional species. The two charts will illustrate all the species commonly Observed. Orders for the chart should be addressed to the Prang Educational Company, Washington Street, Boston. For information regarding the society, address the secretary, Miss Harriet E. Richards, care of Boston Society of Natural History, 234 Berkeley Street, Boston.
