Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Decade of Bird Banding in America: A Review The remarkable increase and spread of the European starling (sturnus vulgaris), since its introduction in New York City in 1890 and 1891, has been watched with much apprehension by students of birds. Because of the obvious potentialities of this bird for good or bad, the Survey early authorized and urged its cooperators to band them at every opportunity. As a gross result many thousands are now wearing numbered bands. Centers of starling banding activity have been Washington, D. C., and Columbus, Ohio. Dur ing the winters of 1927 - 28 and 1928 - 29, the author in company with other Washington ornithologists conducted a banding campaign that resulted in the marking of more than of these birds. The work was instituted under the direction of E. R. Kalmbach, of the Biological Survey, who (1932) has described how the banding Operations so discouraged the birds that they have not since resorted in large numbers to the church towers where so many of their fellows were ignominiously treated. Each hunter is a potential factor in return records for banded game birds, and occasionally also for banded birds of other classes. The possibilities of returns of nongame species are limited by the fact that, compared with the great numbers of hunters, less than persons were holding nongame-bird banding. Permits at the end of the year, although there are frequently chance recoveries of such banded birds from other sources. Furthermore, not all cooperators are operating trapping stations, so that the number of workers effecting returns from these two classes of birds is markedly disproportionate. Station operators are therefore entitled to special commendation for the excellent results they have already obtained. The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states. One or two outer quills with their inner webs emarginated. With or without ear-tufts. Bill blackish; iris yellow. Size medium. Ear-tufts well developed; only one quill emarginated Otus. Ear-tufts rudimentary; two quills emarginated Brachyotus. B. Cere, on top, less than the chord of the culmen; gradually ascending basally, or level (not arched). Ear-conch nearly the height of the skull, with the operculum extending only a part of its full length, or wanting entirely. Jr Anterior edge of the ear - conch with an operculum; the two ears asymmetrical. 3. Syrnium. Five to six outer quills with their inner webs emarginated. Top of cere more than half the culmen. Without ear-tufts. Bill yellow; iris yellow or black. Size medium or large. Six quills emarginated; toes densely feathered the ter minal scutellae concealed; iris yellow. Size very large Scotiaptex. My unpublished determinations of the North American species were furnished, by request, to Dr. Cones, for introduction into his Key of North American Birds consequently the names used in these pages are essentially the same as those there employed.
