Book excerpt: The fifth International Conference on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control and Bioenergy, held in the city of Nîmes (France) on 11-13 September 2013, aims to overview recent scientific advances and technological discoveries which led to the development of improved operating strategies and novel bioreactors configurations for the removal of volatile pollutants with high efficiencies and reduction of malodorous nuisance. With respect to the energy sector, sustainable gas treatment concepts have rapidly been developed through, for example, the conversion of waste gas emissions into cleaner (bio)fuels which can thus be obtained from cheaper sources than fossil fuels. Additional aspects are considered as well, among which the production or/and recovery of compounds and by-products from the waste gas streams. The fifth International Conference on Biotechniques for Air pollution Control and Bioenergy provides a good opportunity for a diverse community of specialized researchers, PhD students and professionals to share information on recent advances in the use of bioprocesses and bioenergy for solving air pollution problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution – air, water, soil, and noise. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste production, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci c pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

It helps to meet the much-needed demand for improvement of low-cost technologies that tackle pollution problems scientifically for the safeguard of the environment, focusing on bioremediation solutions that also create useful and renewable forms of energy. The biotechnological interventions discussed in the volume include approaches involving genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and fluxomics. In addition, biological agents such as microalgae, bacteria, fungi, and bacteriophage, which can also prove to be helpful in the elimination of wastes, are explored. Topics in Environmental Biotechnology: Sustainable Remediation of Contamination in Different Environs include the associated consequences and hazards from agricultural and industrial waste and a variety of bioremediation measures, including the use of bioaugmentation, biosensors, challenges of biofuel production, and more. The book is directed to researchers, scientists, industrialists, farmers, agricultural waste management authorities, as well as to faculty and students, and aims to help implement these novel technologies for environmental stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2008 in the subject Physics - Biophysics, , language: English, abstract: Biofiltration may be used to control indoor air pollution. In biofiltration, contaminants in a gas stream are degraded by microorganisms and converted to carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. In this study, the CO2 production and the elimination capacity (EC) of toluene at inlet concentrations between 20 and 80 ppm were investigated using three biofilters operated separately with soil as bed material. Results showed soil, with its rich microflora taken to full advantage without inoculants and additional nutrients, biodegraded toluene at removal rates comparable to those in other studies at higher concentrations. The quantity of CO2 produced correlates with the quantity of toluene removed which implies effective biodegradation and suggests stable long-term operation at these low concentrations. Though the concentrations used in this study are not typical toluene indoor concentrations (ppb), results show biofiltration may be effective for indoor air pollution control with proper design considering biomass growth or biofilm structure, concentration, and gas flow rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution, a major concern at the end of the 20th century, still remains a significant problem to be solved today. Traditionally, industrial waste gases have primarily been treated through physical or chemical methods. The search for new, efficient, and cost-effective alternative technologies has led to the development and, more recently, the improvement of gas phase bioreactors. This book is the first single text to provide a complete, comprehensive picture of all major biological reactors suitable for solving air pollution problems. The text describes the main features and covers the major aspects, from microbiological to engineering, as well as economic aspects, of the different types of bioreactors. The book also presents an in-depth review of the subject, from fundamental bench-scale research to industrial field applications related to the operation of full-scale systems successfully treating polluted air in Europe and the United States. Material dedicated to more conventional non-biological technologies has also been included, to provide a complete overview of the different alternative treatment processes. Audience: The different chapters have been written by international experts, as a result of a fruitful collaboration between European and American scientists and engineers. The resulting text is a high quality, valuable reference tool for a variety of readers, including graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, professors, engineers, and those professionals who are interested in environmental engineering and, more specifically, in innovative air pollution control technologies.
