Book excerpt: During the last ZO years great progress has been achieved in our understanding of both earth history and vertebrate evolution. The result is that climatic/tectonic events in earth history can now be placed in a more precise and global time frame, that permit their evaluation as abiotic causal factors which might trigger extinction and dispersal events in vertebrate history. Great strides have also been made in genetics and cell biology, providing new insight into phylogenetic relationships among many vertebrates. These new data, along with data on chronologie resolution of earth history, provide tests of previous interpretations regarding ancestral-descendant relationships based solely on the fossil record. It is fitting and proper that a volume on European Neogene mammal chronology is produced at this time, to ensure that new interpretations of vertebrate evolution and chronology are based on the most accurate and current data. Vertebrate paleon tologists believe that the fossil record is the only secure data for measuring the actual course and tempo of vertebrate evolution. Knowledge of the fossil record must keep pace with advances in other areas of science so that inferences on vertebrate evolu tion are accurate and meaningful.

Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary research on the Early-Middle Pleistocene site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov has yielded abundant climatic, environmental, ecological and behavioral records. The 15 archaeological horizons form a sequence of Acheulian occupational episodes on the shore of the paleo-Lake Hula. These enable us to reconstruct numerous aspects of the survival and adaptation of ancient hominins, leading to a better understanding of their evolution and behavior. This book presents the faunal analyses of medium-sized and large mammals, providing taxonomic, taphonomic and actualistic data for the largest faunal assemblages. The study of modes of animal exploitation reveals valuable information on hominin behavior.

Book excerpt: Designed for readers interested in anthropology, paleontology, and evolutionary biology, this excellent resource brings together the major ideas and publications on human evolution of the past three decades. Filled with original articles that have shaped current views of this exciting field, the book spans the entire scope of human evolution with a particular emphasis on the fossil record, including archaeological studies. Themost up-to-date survey of human evolution available on the market today, the articles presented are organized chronologically, showing how debates and opinions have developed over time. The book is divided into the following sections: geological background to human evolution; the earliest hominins: biomolecular and morphological evidence; Australopithecus, Paranthropus, and related forms; origin of the genus Homo; evolution and dispersal of Homo erectus; middle Pleistocene hominins in Africa, Europe, and Asia; the Neandertals; origin of modern humans; and evolution of homo sapiens. An excellent desk reference and resource for anthropologists, paleontologists, and evolutionary biologists, as well as others who wish to add this most informative book to their own libraries.
