Normal histology, non-neoplastic conditions, and neoplasia of the cervix and uterine body are covered using up-to-date terminology and concepts. Emphasis is on morphologic features and immunohistochemistry in the diagnostic material. Ancillary tests such as in situ hybridization for HPV and molecular studies for microsatellite instability assessment and molar pregnancy will be included. Close attention is given to differential diagnoses, including benign mimics of tumors. New to this edition will be a section on section of metastatic tumors.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer in females under 35 years of age and the second most common in females of all ages. Limitations of the existing diagnostic methods have led to the development of new diagnostic approaches. Acetic acid is a marker used for more than 70 years in gynaecology and can identify the transformation zone and detect acetowhitening changes identified as abnormal, while normal areas are not affected. A new Multispectral Imaging Spectroscopy System has been designed and developed (MIS-Colposcope). The MIS-Colposcopy is based on the quantitative and objective assessment of the acetic acid-cervical tissue interaction by means of the Multispectral Imaging Spectroscopy System (MIS-Colposcope). The method was used for the in vivo detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and the results, from measurements of 123 women, indicated that there is a strong correlation between the histological condition of the tissue and the kinetics of the acetowhitening development. The best fit of the time course measurements of acetowhitening was achieved by the triple exponential function. Statistical analysis of several parameters that characterise the acetowhitening kinetics, had indicated that the combined evaluation of the parameters that express the duration and the intensity of acetowhitening differentiates sufficiently all the examined histological conditions. Estimation of the sensitivity and the specificity of this method indicate that its diagnostic performance is comparable or better than that of the existing methods. The authors' data show that this approach may be used as a sensitive and specific non-invasive colposcopic method for the diagnosis of cervical lesions and for the accurate classification of intraepithelial neoplasias.

Book excerpt: This colposcopy manual was developed in the context of the cervical cancer screening research studies of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the related technical support provided to national programs. It is thus a highly comprehensive manual, both for the training of new colposcopists and for the continuing education and reorientation of those who are more experienced. This manual offers a valuable learning resource, incorporating recent developments in the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), as well as in colposcopy and cervical pathology. Expertise in performing satisfactory, safe, and accurate colposcopic examinations requires high competence in the technical, interpretive, and cognitive aspects, and the capability to develop pragmatic and effective management plans and treatment. This comprehensive and concise manual covers all these aspects and serves as a useful handbook for acquiring the necessary skills for the visual recognition and interpretation of colposcopic findings and for developing the personal and professional attributes required for competence in colposcopy.

Book excerpt: A practical guide for the diagnostic surgical pathologist, this new edition of Biopsy Interpretation of the Breast presents the diverse spectrum of pathologic alterations that occur in the breast in a manner analogous to that in which they are encountered in daily practice. Lesions are grouped together according to their histologic patterns rather than by the traditional benign-malignant categorization in order to simulate the way pathologists face these lesions as they examine microscopic slides on a daily basis. The role of adjunctive studies in solving diagnostic problems in breast pathology is emphasized where appropriate. In addition, the clinical significance and impact on patient management of the various diagnoses are discussed and key clinical and management points highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hippocratic Corpus comprises some sixty medical works of varying length, style and content. Collectively, this is the largest surviving body of early Greek prose. As such, it is an invaluable resource for scholars and students not only of ancient medicine but also of Greek life in general. Hippocrates lived in the age of Socrates and most of the treatises seem to originate in the classical period. There is, however, no consensus on Hippocratic attribution. The ‘Hippocratic’ Corpus examines the works individually under the broad headings: content - each work is summarised for the reader comment - the substance and style of each work is discussed context is provided not just in relation to the corpus as a whole but also to the work’s wider relevance. Whereas the scholar or student approaching, say, Euripides or Herodotus has a wealth of books available to provide introduction and orientation, no such study has existed for the Hippocratic Corpus. As The ‘Hippocratic’ Corpus has a substantial introduction, and as each work is summarised for the reader, it facilitates use and exploration of an important body of evidence by all interested in Greek medicine and society. Elizabeth Craik is Honorary Professor at University of St Andrews and Visiting Professor at University of Newcastle, UK.

Book excerpt: This book offers clear, up-to-date guidance on how to report cytologic findings in cervical, vaginal and anal samples in accordance with the 2014 Bethesda System Update. The new edition has been expanded and revised to take into account the advances and experience of the past decade. A new chapter has been added, the terminology and text have been updated, and various terminological and morphologic questions have been clarified. In addition, new images are included that reflect the experience gained with liquid-based cytology since the publication of the last edition in 2004. Among more than 300 images, some represent classic examples of an entity while others illustrate interpretative dilemmas, borderline cytomorphologic features or mimics of epithelial abnormalities. The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, with its user-friendly format, is a “must have” for pathologists, cytopathologists, pathology residents, cytotechnologists, and clinicians.
