Book excerpt: With its unique collection of case studies, this book provides detailed coverage of metal biomonitoring and bioremediation in terrestrial ecosystems using higher plants, lichens, mosses and fungi. Emphasis is placed on application rather than theory. It gives an exhaustive account of the most reliable procedures for sampling, sample preparation, analytical determinations and interpretation of data. Using an ecophysiological approach, metal uptake by plants and metal transfer along terrestrial food chains are examined.

Book excerpt: Air pollution has been recognised as the worlds top problem in many strategic environmental policies. However, it is still inadequately corroborated by regulatory monitoring due to the balance between costs and practicable constraints. The variability in air pollution patterns additionally emphasises a need for feasible approaches to extensive screening of pollutants. To achieve highly temporally -- and spatially -- resolved measurements, biomonitoring (ie: the use of living organisms to determine changes in the environment has been utilised in the investigating of a complementary method to regulatory measurements). The book aims to give reviews of research over the last decade of the most recommended organisms for monitoring airborne inorganic and organic pollutants. Naturally growing mosses and lichens have been used as passive biomonitors of long-term atmospheric deposition of the pollutants across remote areas. To overcome scarcity of these biomonitors in anthropogenically devastated areas, an active biomonitoring approach has been investigated. Specifically, the use of moss and lichen bags represents a convenient technique for easily performed biomonitoring of short-term and small-scale pollutant distribution, especially in urban and industrial areas. As a new direction in biomonitoring, magnetic properties of the biomonitors have been investigated as a valuable proxy for ambient particle pollution. This book moves beyond the attempt to promote biomonitoring as an effective approach for screening air quality that should be considered for implementation into laws and regulations against air pollution. Finally, the authors review the latest research in the field of air pollution biomonitoring, which is vital for everyone engaged in solving environmental issues.

Book excerpt: This volume discusses major areas of primary concern for the understanding of the complexity associated with ecological trace element research. These include sources and fates of trace elements; analytical techniques; and the distribution of trace elements in biota and soil and sediment reservoirs. Case studies, field work and laboratory studies intensively discussed in this volume are useful to enhance our knowledge about processes related to the biological response of trace metal stress under realistic environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: The topic of Positional Responses in Lichen Transplant Biomonitoring of Trace Element Air Pollution is the (bio)monitoring of (trace) element air pollution, with the attention focused on used techniques and selected approaches. Lichens are used in all experiments, and elemental analyses are performed by nuclear multi-elements techniques. This book is focused on lichen transplants aspects, aiming predominantly at transplant vitality, the effects of the positioning of the transplants used and on analytical aspects, thereby concentrating on aspects of comparative PIXE and INAA.

Book excerpt: The population explosion that began in the 1960s has been accompanied by a decrease in the quality of the natural environment, e.g. pollution of the air, water and soil with essential and toxic trace elements. Numerous poisonings of people and animals with highly toxic anthropogenic Hg and Cd in the 20th century prompted the creation of the abiotic environment, mainly in developed countries. However, the system is insufficient for long-term exposure to low concentrations of various substances that are mainly ingested through food and water. This problem could be addressed by the monitoring of sentinels – organisms that accumulate trace elements and as such reflect the rate and degree of environmental pollution. Usually these are long-lived vertebrates – herbivorous, omnivorous and carnivorous birds and mammals, especially game species. This book describes the responses of the sentinels most commonly used in ecotoxicological studies to 17 trace elements.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of air quality in Albania evaluated by moss biomonitoring and metals atmospheric deposition. It is based on the concentration data onto 51 elements in moss samples collected during 2010/2011 moss biomonitoring survey conducted at the same time with European moss biomonitoring survey. The elements under investigation were determined by using ICP-AES and ENAA analytical techniques. Moss species Hypnum cupressiforme (Hedw) sps., a carpet-forming bryophyte, was used as bioindicator of trace metal atmospheric deposition. The goal of this study was to identify factors leading to the high levels of trace metals in at-mospheric deposition in Albania, to identify the risk factors and the origin of trace metals in atmos-pheric deposition. It may help the policy makers and regulators to take proper decisions to protect the public health and the environment. The distribution pattern of the elements was visualized by using the geographic information system, GIS 10.2. The predicted trends of the distribution were calculated by using time series (linear model) and the areas with high concentration of certain met-als were suggested for monitoring and to be under control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book discusses the use of lichen as a biomonitor tool to trace element air deposition, especially focusing on their accumulation performance. The work comprises three main parts, each one addressing relevant issues on factors influencing bioaccumulation. The distribution of accumulated elements, the lichen parameters that need to be used in assessing and ensuring comparability of their characteristics in space and time and the dynamics of the elemental accumulation and release in lichens are all subjects covered in depth in this volume. Lichen Biomonitors: Factor Affecting Response Behaviour starts by presenting the current state-of-the-art of biomonitoring and by introducing relevant issues both generally and specifically recognised as needing attention. The work goes on to explain the intercellular distribution of elements in lichens, the procedures of the comparability testing experiment and, finally, the study of lichens dynamic in more detail. The final chapter discusses and summarises the principal work and the conclusions of the different experiments of the study and highlights the future research that is needed in this area. This book is a must have for people working on biomonitoring issues offering an in-depth study particularly in lichen, for those interested or that have previously worked with these organisms.
