This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume of The Crustacea contains chapters on: ● Devoting a chapter to Pentastomida ● Class Eupentastomida ● Orders Bochusacea, Mictacea, and Spelaeogriphacea ● Order Amphipoda ● Order Tanaidacea For those working on Arthropoda, it will be obvious that the chapters on Pentastomida are newly conceived. The other chapters in this book constitute updated translations of contributions in the French edition of the Traité, volume 7(III)(A), while the order Bochusacea, not featuring in the French version as only more recently described, has been added in a combined treatment with the two closely similar orders. Overall, this constitutes the eighth tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), 3 (2012), 4A (2013), and 4B (2014). From vol. 4A onward the chapters are no longer published in the serial sequence as originally envisaged, because the various contributions, both the updates and the entirely new chapters, become available in a more or less random order. Yet, when completing this series, all major issues as well as all taxa currently recognized will have been treated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Based on extensive local field research undertaken in and around the Cross River National Park in Nigeria, this book provides a socio-economic study of the tensions between agriculture and nature conservation. Taking a ’bottom-up’ approach and focussing on the farm household and the dynamics of forest farming at household level, it brings together a wealth of new information on the subject of tropical forestry, the causes and dynamics of tropical rain forest loss and the problematic relations between conservation authorities in National Parks and local people. Its conclusions raise important questions about practical ways forward in the development of such areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major reference at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine Chemical biology is a rapidly developing field that uses the principles, tools, and language of chemistry to answer important questions in the life sciences. It has enabled researchers to gather critical information about the molecular biology of the cell and is the fundamental science of drug discovery, playing a key role in the development of novel agents for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Now students and researchers across the range of disciplines that use chemical biology techniques have a single resource that encapsulates what is known in the field. It is an excellent place to begin any chemical biology investigation. Major topics addressed in the encyclopedia include: Applications of chemical biology Biomolecules within the cell Chemical views of biology Chemistry of biological processes and systems Synthetic molecules as tools for chemical biology Technologies and techniques in chemical biology Some 300 articles range from pure basic research to areas that have immediate applications in fields such as drug discovery, sensor technology, and catalysis. Novices in the field can turn to articles that introduce them to the basics, whereas experienced researchers have access to articles exploring the cutting edge of the science. Each article ends with a list of references to facilitate further investigation. With contributions from leading researchers and pioneers in the field, the Wiley Encyclopedia of Chemical Biology builds on Wiley's unparalleled reputation for helping students and researchers understand the crucial role of chemistry and chemical techniques in the life sciences.

Book excerpt: This book covers important advances in enzymology, explaining the behavior of enzymes and how they can be utilized to develop novel drugs, synthesize known and novel compounds, and understand evolutionary processes. Advances in Enzymology focuses on enzymes, the primary catalysts of life processes. The explanation of the behavior of enzymes can be found via studies of their chemical mechanisms and can be utilized to develop novel drugs, synthesize known and novel compounds, and understand evolutionary processes. The transglutaminases, first described in 1957, are a large, widely-distributed family of enzymes canonically responsible for the amidation/transamidation of protein side chains. The extraordinary diversity of names associated with various enzymatic activities now recognized and aggregated as transglutaminase bears witness to the remarkable diversity of biological roles associated with the activity, including myriad human diseases.

Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

They take a variety of forms: some are bushy and moss-like, some are flat and encrusting and others resemble lace. Bryozoans are mostly marine, with species found in all oceans from sublittoral to abyssal depths, but freshwater species also exist. Some bryozoans are of concern as marine-fouling organisms and invasive species, while others show promise as sources of anticancer, antiviral and antifouling substances. Written by experts in the field, Australian Bryozoa Volume 2: Taxonomy of Australian Families is the second of two volumes describing Australia’s 1200 known species of bryozoans, the richest diversity of bryozoans of any country in the world. It contains detailed taxonomic data and illustrated family-level treatments, which can be used to identify specimens. It provides an authoritative reference for biology students, academics and others interested in marine biology.

Book excerpt: The motivation for us to produce a treatise on regulation was mainly our convic tion that it would be fun, and at the same time productive, to approach the subject in a way that differs from that of other treatises. We had ourselves written reviews for various volumes over the years, most of them bringing together all possible facts relevant to a particular operon, virus, or biosynthetic system. And we were not convinced of the value of such reviews for anyone but the expert in the field reviewed. We thought it might be more interesting and more instructive-for both author and reader-to avoid reviewing topics that anyone scientist might work on, but instead to review the various parts of what many different scientists work on. Cutting across the traditional boundaries that have separated the subjects in past volumes on regulation is not an easy thing to do-not because it is difficult to think of what interesting topics should replace the old ones, but because it is difficult to find authors who possess sufficient breadth of knowledge and who are willing to write about areas outside those pursued in their own laboratories. For example, no one scientist works on suppression per se. He may study the structure of suppressor tRNAs in Escherichia coli, he may study phenotypic suppression of various characters in drosophila, he may study polarity in gene expression, and so on.
