Book Synopsis Phylogeny of the Primates by : W. Luckett
Download or read book Phylogeny of the Primates written by W. Luckett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a tremendous surge of interest in varied aspects of primate biology, encompassing virtually all disciplines of the biological sciences. Regardless of whether these studies have been approached from a paleontological, morphological, developmental, biochemical, neuroanatomical, or behavioral point of view, one under lying theme has been a common interest in the possible phylogenetic relationships suggested by the results of such studies. In some cases, sound taxonomic principles have not been followed in the interpretation of these data, and this has led to skepticism among many taxonomists with regard to the validity of some of the genealogical relationships and conclusions suggested by comparative studies of living primates. It is generally agreed that the fossil record alone provides the essential time dimension for directly observing changes in characteristics, but unfortunately this record is limited both in the number of genera represented and particularly in the incomplete nature of the available preserved material. On the other hand, extensive comparative analyses of numerous characteristics in living primates have provided additional insight into possible phylogenetic relationships, despite the lack of a time dimension. Such studies of both fossil and living primates are enhanced considerably by a cladistic analysis of the probable primitive (ancestral) or advanced (derived) condition of each character state discussed, based upon their distribution (and ontogeny, wherever possible) in a wide variety of primate and nonprimate taxa, including other eutherian mammals, marsupials, mono tremes, and reptiles.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Primates by : Daris R. Swindler
Download or read book Introduction to the Primates written by Daris R. Swindler and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Primates is a comprehensive but compact guide to the long evolutionary history of the world’s prosimians, monkeys, and apes, and to the much shorter history of humankind’s interactions with them, from our earliest recorded observations to the severe threats we now pose to their survival. Daris Swindler provides a detailed description of the major primate groups and their environments, from the smallest lemurs of Madagascar to the gorillas of central Africa. He compares and contrasts the primate species, looking at each with a specific anatomical focus. The range of diversity emerges as the particular characteristics of the species becomes increasingly distinct. Swindler also considers primate behavior and its close connections with environment and evolutionary differences. His account of 65 million years of successful adaptation and evolution demonstrates the drama of paleontology as evidence accrues and gaps in the history of primate evolution gradually close.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, illustrated textbook that reveals the structural and functional anatomy of primates. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Why do orangutan arms closely resemble human arms? What is the advantage to primates of having long limbs? Why do primates have forward-facing eyes? Answers to questions such as these are usually revealed by comparative studies of primate anatomy. In this heavily illustrated, up-to-date textbook, primate anatomist Daniel L. Gebo provides straightforward explanations of primate anatomy that move logically through the body plan and across species. Including only what is essential in relation to soft tissues, the book relies primarily on bony structures to explain the functions and diversity of anatomy among living primates. Ideal for college and graduate courses, Gebo's book will also appeal to researchers in the fields of mammalogy, primatology, anthropology, and paleontology. Included in this book are discussions of: • Phylogeny • Adaptation • Body size • The wet- and dry-nosed primates • Bone biology • Musculoskeletal mechanics • Strepsirhine and haplorhine heads • Primate teeth and diets • Necks, backs, and tails • The pelvis and reproduction • Locomotion • Forelimbs and hindlimbs • Hands and feet • Grasping toes

Book Synopsis Primate Evolution by : Phyllis C. Lee
Download or read book Primate Evolution written by Phyllis C. Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-08-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of integrated papers on the latest techniques and concepts for understanding the fossil record of primates; including humans. Papers review the dating of primate fossil finds from many areas of the world, as well as the status and importance of recent discoveries of fossils linking the monkeys and apes to humans. Further contributions compare the anatomy and growth of living primates to that of the ancestral animals in order to give an understanding of trends in evolution. A final section discusses the application of recently developed genetic techniques to interpret and explain the evolution of primates. By presenting the most recent research, this volume provides a valuable synthesis of the new developments in primate and human evolution.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Primate Societies by : John C. Mitani
Download or read book The Evolution of Primate Societies written by John C. Mitani and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, the University of Chicago Press published Primate Societies, the standard reference in the field of primate behavior for an entire generation of students and scientists. But in the twenty-five years since its publication, new theories and research techniques for studying the Primate order have been developed, debated, and tested, forcing scientists to revise their understanding of our closest living relatives. Intended as a sequel to Primate Societies, The Evolution of Primate Societies compiles thirty-one chapters that review the current state of knowledge regarding the behavior of nonhuman primates. Chapters are written by the leading authorities in the field and organized around four major adaptive problems primates face as they strive to grow, maintain themselves, and reproduce in the wild. The inclusion of chapters on the behavior of humans at the end of each major section represents one particularly novel aspect of the book, and it will remind readers what we can learn about ourselves through research on nonhuman primates. The final section highlights some of the innovative and cutting-edge research designed to reveal the similarities and differences between nonhuman and human primate cognition. The Evolution of Primate Societies will be every bit the landmark publication its predecessor has been.
