Book excerpt: Provides guidelines for the biological monitoring of occupational exposure to four metals (aluminium, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel), three solvents (benzene, methanol, and methylene chloride), two groups of pesticides (dithiocarbamates and pyrethroids), aromatic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Guidelines for each chemical follow a common framework. The chemical is first introduced in terms of its physical and chemical properties, possible occupational and non-occupational exposures, data on toxicokinetics and toxic effects, and a comparison of currently available biological indicators of exposure. Recommended biomarkers are then discussed in terms of suggested methods of sampling and analysis, and guidelines for the interpretation of test results.

Book excerpt: 1.1 Organisation and aims This International Seminar, organised jointly by the Com mission of the European Communities and the United States authorities (Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) has brought together more than 150 participants from the Member States of the European Community, from the United States, and also from Greece, Finland, Sweden and Switzer land. The aim of the Seminar was to examine the roles of ambient and biological monitoring in protecting the health of workers exposed to toxic agents and to define a multidisciplinary approach to this monitoring. To achieve this aim expertise from the following disciplines, directly or indirectly involved with monitoring, was called upon: medicine, industrial hygiene, nursing, biology, engi neering, chemistry, epidemiology, statistics, economics and jurisprudence, and representatives from trade unions, indus try and government agencies. The difference in concepts that each of these disciplines has of monitoring and of its role in the team is fully reflected in the papers. 1.2 Current trends in occupational health and hygiene (as related to monitoring).

Book excerpt: A practical guide to biological monitoring for industrial chemical exposure assessment, this authoritative book summarizes what is known about biological monitoring for inorganic, organic, and organometallic substances. The authors explore the objectives of biological monitoring, the types of biological monitoring methods, their advantages and limitations, as well as practical aspects that must be considered before initiating a biological monitoring program. They identify the potential biological markers for assessing exposure or body burden and include summary tables with practical recommendations that give readers quick and easy access to the data.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, industrial hygienists have sought to prevent excessive exposure to chemicals in industry by setting standards for concentrations of chemicals in ambient air. Standards for chemicals in air applied by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists include: the maximum allowable concentration (MAC), the threshold limit value (TLV), and the emergency exposure limit (EEL) However, the monitoring of air concentrations only considers exposure by inhalation and is not indicative of the actual uptake or total body burden of chemicals by exposed workers. During the past 20 years numerous procedures have been developed for the analysis of industrial chemicals in biological specimens collected from workers. Such biological monitoring takes into consideration absorption of chemicals by all routes of absorption and differences in individual exposures. The goal of biological monitoring is to detect excessive exposure in workers before the occurrence of detectable adverse health effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF EXPOSURE TO INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS MEANS EVALUATION OF THE INTERNAL EXPOSURE OF THE ORGANISM TO A CHEMICAL AGENT (IE, THE INTERNAL DOSE) BY A BIOLOGICAL METHOD. INTERNAL EXPOSURE OR INTERNAL DOSE MAY MEAN THE AMOUNT OF THE CHEMICAL RECENTLY ABSORBED, THEAMOUNT ALREADY STORED IN THE ORGANISM (BODY BURDEN), OR THE AMOUNT OF THE ACTIVE CHEMICAL SPECIES BOUND TO THE SITES OF ACTION. THREE TYPES OF MEASUREMENTS ARE USUALLY SELECTED TO EVALUATE THE INTERNAL DOSE: 1. THE CONCENTRATION OF THE SUBSTANCE ITSELF IN VARIOUS BIOLOGICAL MEDIA (BLOOD, URINE, EXPIRED AIR, HAIR, ADIPOSETISSUE, SALIVA, ETC); 2. THE CONCENTRATION OF ITS BIOTRANSFORMATION PRODUCTS (METABOLITES) IN THE SAME MEDIA; 3. THE DETERMINATION OF NON-ADVERSE BIOLOGICAL CHANGES THAT ARE THE RESULTS OF THE REACTION OF THE ORGANISM TO EXPOSURE. THE MAIN GOAL OF BIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF EXPOSURE IS EITHER TO INSURE THAT THE CURRENT OR PAST EXPOSURE OF THE WORKERS IS SAFE (IE, DOES NOT ENTAIL AN UNACCEPTABLE HEALTH RISK) OR TO DETECT POTENTIAL EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE BEFORE THE OCCURRENCE OF DETECTABLE ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. IT IS ESSENTIALLY A PREVENTIVE MEDICAL ACTIVITY. AUTHORS ABSTRACT ABRIDGED.

Book excerpt: In keeping with a congressional mandate (Public Law 104-484) and the Chemical Weapons Convention, the United States is currently destroying its chemical weapons stockpile. The Army must ensure that the chemical demilitarization workforce is protected from the risks of exposure to hazardous chemicals during disposal operations and during and after facility closure. Good industrial practices developed in the chemical and nuclear energy industries and other operations that involve the processing of hazardous materials include workplace monitoring of hazardous species and a systematic occupational health program for monitoring workers' activities and health. In this report, the National Research Council Committee on Review and Evaluation of the Army Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program examines the methods and systems used at JACADS and TOCDF, the two operational facilities, to monitor the concentrations of airborne and condensed-phase chemical agents, agent breakdown products, and other substances of concern. The committee also reviews the occupational health programs at these sites, including their industrial hygiene and occupational medicine components. Finally, it evaluates the nature, quality, and utility of records of workplace chemical monitoring and occupational health programs.
