This book was released on 2006 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation is a series of studies related to the development of a TMDL for the Olentangy watershed. In the first study, a customized version of the SWAT model was used to predict hydrology and water chemistry for the Olentangy River watershed (1985-2002). This version of SWAT simulated a restrictive layer in the soil profile and its impact on subsurface drainage, watershed hydrology, and nutrient and sediment transport. Model parameterization and calibration are presented. Following model calibration all land use in the watershed was changed to forest, prairie, or wetlands to predict potential water quality of pre-European conditions. Results suggest that sediment, total phosphorus, and nitrate-nitrogen at the watershed outlet have increased by factors of approximately 50, 20, and 3, respectively, for most subwatersheds in the watershed. The calibrated SWAT model was used to predict the potential water quality benefits of alternative management scenarios. Alternative management scenarios that were evaluated include: 1) crop rotations, 2) fertilizer application rates, 3) types of tillage, 4) timing of tillage operations, and 5) buffer strips. A 33-meter buffer strip was predicted to provide the largest water quality benefits when compared to other alternative management scenarios. Another study was conducted to develop a geomorphology assessment index to provide a logical and minimally biased framework to evaluate dynamic equilibrium at study sites in the Olentangy River watershed. Regional curves were developed using geomorphology data from study sites impacted by a variety of disturbances. A diagnostic approach that integrated multiple lines of evidence was used to develop the index. In chapter 5 a statistical analysis was conducted to examine species-environment relationships between stream biology and environmental variables such as water quality, habitat, spatial location, and geomorphology. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to elucidate relationships between biology and environmental variability. Partial CCA techniques were used to partition variation among the groups of environmental variables. Environmental variables were grouped into three categories including geomorphology variables, habitat variables, and spatial location variables. The partial CCA technique was used to partition variation between each of these variable groups. Results suggest that geomorphology variables explained the most variation.

This collection of research articles focuses on our current understanding of the impacts of removing dams and the role of dam removal in the larger context of river restoration. The papers are grouped by topic: (1) assessment of existing dams, strategies to determine impounded legacy sediments, and evaluating whether or not to remove the dam; (2) case studies of the hydrologic, sediment, and ecosystem impacts of recent dam removals; (3) assessment of river restoration by modifying flows or removing dams; and (4) the concept of river restoration in the context of historical changes in river systems"--Provided by publisher.

It is a measure of the water condition related to the requirements of biotic species and to human need. The health of ecosystems, safety of human contact, and drinking water are the most common standards used to measure water quality. Water quality parameters can be categorized into human consumption, environmental water quality, and industrial and domestic use. The measurement of water quality includes the process of sample collection, chemical analysis, real-time monitoring and testing in response to natural disasters. Various environmental indicators such as physical, chemical and biological indicators are also observed and used for the monitoring of water quality. This book explores all the important aspects of water quality in the present day scenario. It elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary manner. It will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a social—ecological system description and feedback analysis of the Lake Tana Basin, the headwater catchment of the Upper Blue Nile River. This basin is an important local, national, and international resource, and concern about its sustainable development is growing at many levels. Lake Tana Basin outflows of water, sediments, nutrients, and contaminants affect water that flows downstream in the Blue Nile across international boundaries into the Nile River; the lake and surrounding land have recently been proposed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; the basin has been designated as a key national economic growth corridor in the Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plan. In spite of the Lake Tana Basin’s importance, there is no comprehensive, integrated, system-wide description of its characteristics and dynamics that can serve as a basis for its sustainable development. This book presents both the social and ecological characteristics of the region and an integrated, system-wide perspective of the feedback links that shape social and ecological change in the basin. Finally, it summarizes key research needs for sustainable development.
