Book excerpt: The discipline of neurodesign is a highly interdisciplinary one, while at the same time in the process of maturing towards real-life applications. The breakthrough about to be achieved is to close the loop in communication between neural systems and electronic and mechatronic systems and actually let the nervous system adapt to the feedback from the man-made systems. To master this loop, scientists need a sound understanding of neurology, from the cellular to the systems scale, of man-made systems and how to connect the two. These scientists comprise medical scientists, neurologists and physiologists, engineers, as well as biophysicists. And they need the topics in a coherently written work with chapters building upon another.

Book excerpt: t With the F caesarium, that was held in Bonn in November of 1999, the newly founded research center caesar (center of advanced european studies and research) has initiated a series of symposia, which are to bring researchers together for discussions and definition of positions on the various research fields at caesar on an annual basis. The areas of research at caesar incorpo- rate materials science/nanotechnology, coupling of biological and electronic systems and ergonomics in communications. nd In November of 2000, the 2 caesarium, this time with the theme of "Coupling of Biological and Electronic Systems" was held in Bonn. The con- ference transcript at hand delivers an impression of the introduced topics and discussions. The coupling of biochemics and electronics together with bioinformatics is an exciting and current thematic complex, which will surely co-define the development of science and research for a long time. The pre- n d sentations held at the 2 caesarium gave a glimpse into broadly diversified areas such as bioinformatics, biomolecules and biosensor technology. Further miniaturisation up to the nanoscale played as much of a role asthe conception of fast algorithms for the structural reconnoitring of proteins. We would like to thank the participants of the symposium for the inspiring discussions in a not always easy interdisciplinary dialogue. Thanks to the organising com- mittee, the colleagues Michael Famulok, Daniel Hoffmann, Michael Moske and Eckhard Quandt, the symposium became a success.

Book excerpt: How engineered materials and machines powered by living biological cells can tackle technological challenges in medicine, agriculture, and global security. You are a biological machine whose movement is powered by skeletal muscle, just as a car is a machine whose movement is powered by an engine. If you can be built from the bottom up with biological materials, other machines can be as well. This is the conceptual starting point for biofabrication, the act of building with living cells--building with biology in the same way we build with synthetic materials. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Ritu Raman offers an accessible introduction to biofabrication, arguing that it can address some of our greatest technological challenges. After presenting the background information needed to understand the emergence and evolution of biofabrication and describing the fundamental technology that enables building with biology, Raman takes deep dives into four biofabrication applications that have the potential to affect our daily lives: tissue engineering, organs-on-a-chip, lab-grown meat and leather, and biohybrid machines. Organs-on-a-chip (devices composed of miniature model tissues), for example, could be used to test new medicine and therapies, and lab-grown meat could alleviate environmental damage done by animal farming. She shows that biological materials have abilities synthetic materials do not, including the ability to adapt dynamically to their environments. Exploring the principles of biofabrication, Raman tells us, should help us appreciate the beauty, adaptiveness, and persistence of the biological machinery that drives our bodies and our world.

Book excerpt: Advances and Technology Development in Greenhouse Gases: Emission, Capture and Conversion is a comprehensive seven-volume set of books that discusses the composition and properties of greenhouse gases, and introduces different sources of greenhouse gases emission and the relation between greenhouse gases and global warming. The comprehensive and detailed presentation of common technologies as well as novel research related to all aspects of greenhouse gases makes this work an indispensable encyclopedic resource for researchers in academia and industry.Volume 5 titled Carbon Dioxide Conversion to Chemicals and Energy provides a beneficial strategy to control the rise of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere and their conversion into valuable materials such as chemical and energy carriers. The book touches concepts about the conversion of carbon dioxide, which is the main GHG. This two-section volume provides applications of carbon dioxide and the chemical processes employed to fabricate a host of materials. Each section reviews a process in detail and surveys the economic assessments, cost analysis, environmental impacts and challenges, recent advances and new concepts, and the largest operating plants and pilots for carbon conversion. - Introduces different applications of carbon dioxide - Includes environmental challenges and economic assessment of carbon capture and utilization - Describes various chemicals produced from CO2
