Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of Myron Tanner The subject matter from which this sketch was taken was much of it given by Myron Tanner to his children, Sunday, June 14, 1896, at Provo City, Utah, where the family had gathered to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of his birth. The gathering, however, had been postponed a week in view of the enforced absence of some of the family. "I was born," he said, "on the 7th day of June, 1826, in the town of Bolton, Warren County, State of New York, where I lived until I was eight years old." This little town is located on a beautiful spot of earth near Lake George, It was here that John Tanner, the father of Myron Tanner, received the gospel. The father was a prosperous man in those days, and one of the leading farmers of the community in which he lived. Wishing to join the body of the Saints, with whose destiny he now became identified, he left Bolton, December 25, 1834, and arrived at Kirtland in March, 1835. The family remained in Kirtland for three years, where they were largely engaged in the erection of the Temple. The names of John Tanner and his older son Sidney Tanner, being honorably mentioned among those entitled to recognition for their devoted services in the erection of the house of God. John Tanner was himself an energetic and intelligent farmer, and his love for and cultivation of the soil characterized his labors at each stopping place in every exodus of the Saints. His old farm at Kirtland is still in the ownership and possession of one of his descendants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Options have been traded for hundreds of years, but investment decisions were based on gut feelings until the Nobel Prize -- winning discovery of the Black-Scholes options pricing model in 1973 ushered in the era of the "quants." Wall Street would never be the same. In Pricing the Future, financial economist George G. Szpiro tells the fascinating stories of the pioneers of mathematical finance who conducted the search for the elusive options pricing formula. From the broker's assistant who published the first mathematical explanation of financial markets to Albert Einstein and other scientists who looked for a way to explain the movement of atoms and molecules, Pricing the Future retraces the historical and intellectual developments that ultimately led to the widespread use of mathematical models to drive investment strategies on Wall Street.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-Brothers offers the most extensive analysis to date of the sea and its meaning in American literature. On the basis of his study of Melville, Crane, London, Hemingway, Matthiessen, and ten lesser-known sea-writers, Bert Bender argues that the tradition of American sea fiction did not end with the opening of the western frontier and the replacement of sailing ships by steamers. Rather, he demonstrates its continuity and vitality, identifying a central vision within the tradition and showing how particular authors draw from, transform, and contribute to it. What is most distinctive about American sea fiction, Bender contends, is its visionary, often mystical, response to the biological world and to man's perceived place in the larger universe. When Melville envisioned the sea as the essential element of life, indeed as life itself, he changed the course of American sea fiction by introducing the relevance of biological thought. But his meditations on the whale and "the ungraspable phantom of life" project a different reality from that envisioned by his successors. In American sea fiction after Melville, the influence of Origin of Species is as powerful as that of Moby Dick or the theme of sailing ships being displaced by steam. The ideal of brotherhood so central to American sea fiction was severely compromised by the biological reality of a competitive, warring nature. Twentieth-century sea fiction has continued to center on the biological world and address the possibility of democratic brotherhood, but the issues were fundamentally changed by Darwin's theories. This book will be a valuable source for students and scholars of American literature and will interest readers of sea fiction.

Whether you're new to automated tests or have been using them for years, this book will help you write more effective tests. RSpec has been downloaded more than 100 million times and has inspired countless test frameworks in other languages. Use this influential Ruby testing framework to iteratively develop a project with the confidence that comes from well-tested code. This book guides you through creating a Ruby project with RSpec, and explores the individual components in detail. Start by learning the basics of installing and using RSpec. Then build a real-world JSON API, using RSpec throughout the process to drive a BDD-style outside-in workflow. Book excerpt: "The ancient Greeks developed their own very specific ethos of art appreciation, advocating a rational involvement with art. This book explores why the ancient Greeks started to write art history and how the writing of art history transformed the social functions of art in the Greek world. It looks at the invention of the genre of portraiture, and the social uses to which portraits were put in the city state. Later chapters explore how artists sought to enhance their status by writing theoretical treatises and producing works of art intended for purely aesthetic contemplation which ultimately gave rise to the writing of art history and to the development of art collecting. The study, which is illustrated throughout and which draws on contemporary perspectives in the sociology of art, will prompt the student of classical art to rethink fundamental assumptions on Greek art and its cultural and social implications."--BOOK JACKET.
