This book was released on 1995 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904-66), India's second prime minister and successor to Jawaharlal Nehru, is the absorbing saga of a little man who, while suffering the rigours of poverty in early life, rose to political eminence on the strength of moral principle. When Shastri died, he left no house, no land, no money. But he did leave behind an example which is morally inspiring. In an age riddled with political corruption, his career of exemplary integrity possesses a very special relevance for readers in contemporary India as well as abroad. Although Shastri's tenure as prime minister lasted only nineteen months, it was a period of high excitement and drama. Under Shastri's leadership India successfully fought a major war against Pakistan. This came as a tremendous boost to India after the China debacle three years earlier. This Indo-Pak war was followed by successful peace negotiations between the two countries at the famous Tashkent Conference, where, with the ink scarcely dry after all the momentous signatures, Shastri dramatically died of a heart attack. Several social and political issues of national importance and international interest emerged or found successful resolution during the time that Shastri held political power in Nehru's cabinet, as well as when he took over the premiership of India. There was the Kamaraj Plan; the question of Nehru's successor; the English-Hindi national language controversy; the problems of food scarcity and foodgrain imports; the Hazratbal episode of the stolen sacred relic from the shrine in Kashmir; the complicated diplomatic negotiations over Kashmir in the United Nations; the tangled web of tightrope relations with China, the USA, andthe USSR; the controversy and suspicion over the circumstances of Shastri's sudden death; and finally the heroism and acclaim that came to Shastri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India Vs Pakistan. No. This is not a cricket match hyped-up by media. We are talking about war, real war! This war is nothing new. It started even before the new country "Pakistan" existed, and still continuing for more than 60 years. In the mid forties, our freedom struggle movement was reaching its peak. At one point, British authorities decided they can't hold us anymore and decided to leave the country. A grand success to generations of freedom fighters! But, this victory came with an added headache. Our British rulers also decided to split India into two pieces, and create a new country called Pakistan. Means, effectively they were granting freedom to two countries, not one. This is exactly what happened in case of Pakistan too. Even after their new country was officially formed on August 14th 1947, they were still not satisfied. According to them, many states that now belonged to Independent India should be theirs. Mainly, Kashmir! During that time, Jawaharlal Nehru was the Indian Prime Minister. He didn't like wars. Personally, he wanted India to have good relationship with all her neighbors, and believed that will make the whole south Asia a peaceful destination. After all, Pakistan was not attacking India directly. If India also gets into such backdoor tactics, things will get ugly, and Nehru didn't want it. The entire world respected Nehru as a leader. So, if Pakistan makes a wrong move, they will be in huge trouble. So they were waiting for a good opportunity to attack India directly. That happened after Nehru's life time. India now had a new prime minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. Supposed to be a short, calm person, well respected, but not as huge a personality as Nehru. So, Pakistan decided to attack India directly. Its president Ayub Khan ordered their army to make explicit advances in Kashmir, across Indian border. Now, India went into serious dilemma. Should they attack Pakistan? What happens to Nehru's peace projects? Does that mean we give away Kashmir? Everyone looked at Lal Bahadur Shastri for advice. On May 27, 1965, Prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri addressed India in a large meeting organized in Delhi Ramlila Ground. This inspired the whole nation. Millions of citizens were mentally prepared to fight the war, either in the battlefield directly, or by performing their duties religiously, by collecting money, by supporting the soldiers in various other ways. We were able to fight Pakistan and teach them a good lesson too! During this war, Lal Bahadur Shastri also coined a term "Jai Jawan! Jai Kisan". Meaning, "Victory to Soldiers, Victory to Farmers". This simple slogan characterized India's respect, for those who protect its borders, and for those who provide food in our plates. This way, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the face of Indian Public. He was a living proof that a simple citizen of India can grow to its top position and lead the country to great heights. Everyone started looking at him with respect!

Book excerpt: Famous for the inspiring slogan, 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', Lal Bahadur Shastri's prime ministership saw India ensuring respect for the farmer and the soldier. In his brief yet eventful tenure of nineteen months, he resolved some of the most contentious problems facing the country, by taking all segments of society along. The book takes a closer look at his pioneering efforts at ensuring self-sufficiency in foodgrains by ushering in the Green Revolution. As the inspiration behind the original 'surgical strikes', it also highlights the laudatory manner in which Shastri motivated the soldiers to effectively respond to Pakistan's military adventurism, by giving the green signal to the military to enter Pakistani soil. Insightful, thought-provoking, and written in a lucid style by one of India's most respected political commentators, Lal Bahadur Shastri focuses on the leader's greatest strengths-integrity, humility, simplicity and a self-effacing nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the time of the Cold War. After defeating Pakistan in the second biggest armed conflict since the Second World War, Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri arrived in Tashkent, former USSR, to sign a peace accord. After days of extended negotiations, the peace agreement was signed between India and Pakistan in the presence of Alexei Kosygin, the USSR Premier. Hours later, at 1.32 AM, Shastri died in his dacha. Abruptly. Mysteriously. Soon after, his official Russian butler and the Indian cook attached to the Indian ambassador were arrested by the Ninth Directorate of the KGB under the suspicion of poisoning Shastri. No post-mortem was done. No confession was achieved. There was no judicial enquiry ever. It's been 50 years since his death, and we still don't know the truth. Was it really a heart attack? Was he poisoned? Did the CIA kill him? Was it the KGB? Was it a state-sponsored murder? Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri along with his motley team of inexperienced assistants turned whistle-blowers investigate the mystery behind Shastri's death and find themselves in a mirror-world where all and everybody is suspect. But they cannot remain distant, for the painful story of India touches their own lives as they discover how the country was put up for sale.
