Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Ancient Irish Saints, Etc That converts to Christianity were in Ireland before the arrival there of St. Patrick, is admitted by all good historians. Palladius, who was sent by Pope Celestine to Ireland, A.D. 431, but who remained in that country only a very short time, was sent to the "Scots that believe in Christ." This sentence proves two things: first, that the ancient Irish were called "Scots," and secondly, that there were Christians already in the land. It is said that they had Bishops amongst them, and therefore some species of authorized Church constitution. Book excerpt: Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister's book, 'The Latin & Irish Lives of Ciaran,' delves into the hagiography of one of Ireland's most revered saints, St. Ciaran of Clonmacnoise. Through the comparison of Latin and Irish sources, Macalister offers a comprehensive analysis of the life and miracles of St. Ciaran, shedding light on the cultural and religious significance of this early Irish saint. The book is meticulously researched and presented in a scholarly yet accessible manner, making it a valuable resource for students and scholars of early Irish history and hagiography. Macalister's blend of linguistic expertise and historical insight brings new depth to the study of St. Ciaran's life and legacy. Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister, a prominent Celtic scholar and archaeologist, dedicated much of his career to studying ancient Irish texts and monuments. His passion for the preservation and interpretation of early Irish history is evident in 'The Latin & Irish Lives of Ciaran,' where he skillfully combines his knowledge of language, history, and archaeology to paint a vivid portrait of St. Ciaran and the world in which he lived. I highly recommend 'The Latin & Irish Lives of Ciaran' to anyone interested in early Irish history, hagiography, or the intersection of language and culture. Macalister's thorough research and insightful analysis make this book a must-read for those looking to deepen their understanding of Ireland's rich religious heritage.

Book excerpt: Scarcely a parish in Ireland is without one or more dedications to saints, in the form of churches in ruins, holy wells or other ecclesiastical monuments. Professor Pádraig Ó Riain's Dictionary of Irish Saints is intended to serve as a guide to the (mainly documentary) sources of information on the saints named in these dedications, for those who have an interest in them, scholarly or otherwise. The need for a summary biographical dictionary of Irish saints, containing information on such matters as feastdays, localisations, chronology, and genealogies, although stressed over sixty years ago by the eminent Jesuit and Bollandist scholar, Paul Grosjean, has never before been satisfied. Professor Ó Riain has been working in the field of Irish hagiography for upwards of forty years, and the material for the over 1,000 entries in his Dictionary has come from a variety of sources, including Lives of the saints, martyrologies, genealogies of the saints, shorter tracts on the saints (some of them accessible only in manuscripts), annals, annates, collections of folklore, Ordnance Survey letters, and other documents. Running to almost 700 pages, the body of the Dictionary is preceded by a Preface, List of Sources and Introduction, and is followed by comprehensive Indices of Parishes, Other Places (mainly townlands), Alternate (mainly Anglicised) Names, Subjects, and Feastdays. Professor Ó Riain's Dictionary has been described as 'an astonishingly comprehensive, intelligent and well-organized work'; it is unlikely to be superseded for many decades to come.
