Book Synopsis Biographia Navalis - Volume 3 by : John Carnock
Download or read book Biographia Navalis - Volume 3 written by John Carnock and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only word to describe this work is monumental. It is a record of the services of more than 2200 naval officers across a span of nearly 140 years, drawn from the most authentic sources (according to the title page) and disposed in a chronological arrangement. Sometimes only one or two lines constitute the entry, in other cases there are several pages (Earl St Vincent takes ten pages). They are set out on a year by year basis, and within each year the names are arranged alphabetically. Charnock intended this to be a four-volume work but that wasn't enough, two more were needed (V and VI) and these were subtitled The First and Second Volumes of the Continuation. Each of the six volumes has its own index.

Download or read book Empire of the Seas written by Brian Lavery and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC TV Tie-in to Dan Snow's Timewatch series exploring the navy's rise over four centuries. The year 1588 marked a turning point in our national story. Victory over the Spanish Armada transformed us into a seafaring nation and it sparked a myth that one day would become a reality – that the nation's new destiny, the source of her future wealth and power lay out on the oceans. This book tells the story of how the navy expanded from a tiny force to become the most complex industrial enterprise on earth; how the need to organise it laid the foundations of our civil service and our economy; and how it transformed our culture, our sense of national identity and our democracy. Brian Lavery's narrative explores the navy's rise over four centuries; a key factor in propelling Britain to its status as the most powerful nation on earth, and assesses the turning point of Jutland and the First World War. He creates a compelling read that is every bit as engaging as the TV series itself.

Book Synopsis Catastrophe at Spithead by : Hilary L. Rubinstein
Download or read book Catastrophe at Spithead written by Hilary L. Rubinstein and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating historical inquiry sheds new light on the mysterious sinking of an 18th century warship and its lingering effect on British naval culture. On August 29th, 1782, the mighty flagship HMS Royal George suddenly capsized while anchored in the calm, familiar waters of Spithead on the English Channel. In one of the most sensational and perplexing incidents in naval history, Rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt, an outstanding veteran officer, drowned along with more than 800 crew and many civilian visitors. Catastrophe at Spithead is the first comprehensive account of the sinking, drawn from a variety of archival sources, including reports by survivors and eyewitnesses. Hilary L. Rubinstein examines the mysterious cause and tragic cost of the disaster, as well as its lingering aftereffects, including its treatment in literature. As well as describing the sinking, Rubenstein uncovers new information on the life and career of Rear Admiral Kempenfelt, ranging from his familial relation to the great Admiral Rodney to accounts of his whereabouts when the ship sank. These call into question the scenario in William Cowper's famous poem, “On the Sinking of the Royal George,” which depicts Kempenfelt writing in his cabin when she foundered.

Book Synopsis William IV (Penguin Monarchs) by : Roger Knight
Download or read book William IV (Penguin Monarchs) written by Roger Knight and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William IV, the 'Sailor King', reigned for just seven years. Rash and impetuous as a young man, he was sent to join the navy by his father, George III, to bring him to order, but he was overpromoted at an early age and saw his years of active service marked by a series of calamities. He was also notorious for his mounting debts and his long relationship with the actress Mrs Jordan, with whom he had ten children. Yet, as Roger Knight, one of Britain's foremost naval historians, shows in this concise and perceptive biography, William's bluff, unpolished sailor's manner made him popular with the people. Inheriting the throne amid strikes, riots and the push for parliamentary reform, he helped see the country through the great constitutional crisis of the era. Despite his many flaws, he was perhaps a better king than sailor, leaving the monarchy in a healthier state than when he found it, and enabling the smooth succession of his niece, Victoria.
