Book Synopsis Swedish Cinema and the Sexual Revolution by : Elisabet Björklund
Download or read book Swedish Cinema and the Sexual Revolution written by Elisabet Björklund and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swedish cinema became recognized for daring representations of sexuality with such films as One Summer of Happiness (1951), The Silence (1963), I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967) and a wave of sex films in the late 1960s and 1970s. The association between Swedish film and sexuality shows up frequently in popular culture. From Taxi Driver (1976) to Mad Men (2007-2015), dirty Swedish movie references abound. Yet the connection has attracted little critical attention. In this collection of new essays, Swedish and American scholars go beyond popular misconceptions to explore the origins, influences and reception of sexuality in Swedish cinema during the "sexual revolution" on both sides of the Atlantic. A broad range of topics are covered, from analyses of key films, to a behind-the-scenes study of the Swedish Film Institute, which played a significant role in opposing Swedish film censorship.
Book Synopsis Researching Newsreels by : Ciara Chambers
Download or read book Researching Newsreels written by Ciara Chambers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the underscrutinised topic of cinema newsreels. These short, multi-themed newsfilms, usually accompanied by explanatory intertitles or voiceovers, were a central part of the filmgoing experience around the world from 1910 through the late 1960s, and in many cases even later. As the only source of moving image news available before the widespread advent of television, newsreels are important social documents, recording what the general public was told and shown about the events and personalities of the day. Often disregarded as quirky or trivial, they were heavily utilised as propaganda vehicles, offering insights into the socio-political norms reflected in cinema during the first half of the twentieth century. The book presents a range of current research being undertaken in newsreel studies internationally and makes a case for a reconsideration of the importance of newsreels in the wider landscape of film history.

Book Synopsis The Emergence of Film Culture by : Malte Hagener
Download or read book The Emergence of Film Culture written by Malte Hagener and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, a distinct and vibrant film culture emerged in Europe. Film festivals and schools were established; film theory and history was written that took cinema seriously as an art form; and critical writing that created the film canon flourished. This scene was decidedly transnational and creative, overcoming traditional boundaries between theory and practice, and between national and linguistic borders. This new European film culture established film as a valid form of social expression, as an art form, and as a political force to be reckoned with. By examining the extraordinarily rich and creative uses of cinema in the interwar period, we can examine the roots of film culture as we know it today.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Cinema by : John Sundholm
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Cinema written by John Sundholm and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although relatively small, the northern countries of Scandinavia have made a disproportionately large contribution to world cinema. Indeed, some of their films are among the best known of all times, including The Seventh Seal, Dancer in the Dark, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And Scandinavian directors are also among the best known, just to mention Ingmar Bergman and Lars von Trier. But there is much more to the cinema of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland than that, and this book shows us what they have been accomplishing over more than a century from the beginnings of cinema until the present. The Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Cinema shows just how long and busy this history has been in the chronology, starting in 1896. The introduction then describes the situation in each one of the component countries, all of which approached and developed the field in a similar but also slightly different manner. The dictionary section, with over 400 substantial entries, looks at the situation in greater detail, with over 400 substantial entries on major actors, directors and others, significant films, various genres and themes, and subjects such as animation, ethnicity, migration and censorship. Given its contribution to world cinema it is good to finally have an encyclopedia like this which can meet the interests of the scholar and researcher but also the movie fan.

Book Synopsis Ingmar Bergman and the Rituals of Art by : Paisley Livingston
Download or read book Ingmar Bergman and the Rituals of Art written by Paisley Livingston and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close readings of Bergman's famous and lesser-known films, as well as through study of his early stage productions, untranslated essays, interviews, and scripts, Paisley Livingston elucidates Bergman's rigorous critique of the violence, persecution, and deceit in modern culture. Bergman's focal point is the dilemma of the artist in society, the nature and value of his exchanges with the public. He envisions modern art in terms of its relation to a moribund tradition: in its dependence on destructive and sterile ritual patterns, art has lost the power to influence the development of our lives. Bergman criticizes the vestiges of cult values in both popular and elite forms of art, from the idolatry of the star system to the aggressive primitivism of certain avant-garde experiments. Linking his innovations in film form to an investigation of the processes of social interaction, Bergman is able to confront the artist's relation to both the order and the disorder of culture.
Book Synopsis Masculinity in the Golden Age of Swedish Cinema by : Tommy Gustafsson
Download or read book Masculinity in the Golden Age of Swedish Cinema written by Tommy Gustafsson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swedish society underwent great changes during the first decades of the 1900s and the new consumption and entertainment culture came under fire. Children and youth--but also women and the working classes--become symbols of the forces breaking down traditional structures and values. These groups were also identified as the principal audience for the new film medium. Hence, during the silent era, film culture interacted with society at large, filling the screen with contradictory images of diverging masculinities and gender/ethnic relations. In fact, film culture became one of the most important arenas where new gender relations could be articulated. This book covers Swedish film culture throughout the 1920s. It is the first in-depth exploration of Swedish silent film culture that goes beyond the small number of canonized films of the "Swedish Golden Age" that have been discussed as "art" for nearly 100 years. The study is based on extensive research and takes all Swedish feature films produced in the 1920s into consideration, together with a large number of source materials that include fan and trade magazines, manuscripts, censorship records, government reports and some 900 film reviews.
