Book excerpt: This report provides information from a consultancy project carried out to assist the European Commission in its implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. It evaluates the biodiversity expenditure tracking methodology used by the Commission for the 2014 to 2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, and, on the basis of those findings and in the light of changes to the structure of programmes, makes recommendations for tracking in the 2021-2027 period. It also offers suggestions on possible alternative methodologies, and on improving the consistency of EU Member State international reporting on biodiversity. The second part of the report then estimates the financing needs for delivery of the 41 objectives under the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030. Current levels of financial expenditure from the EU, from Member States public expenditure, and from private sources, are then estimated. Estimates of future expenditure from these sources for the period 2021-2030 are then developed, based on a combination of extrapolation and published budgetary plans. In a final step, these estimates are compared to the estimated financing needs, and an estimated average gap of EUR 18.69 billion a year is identified.

It presents a preliminary assessment of current biodiversity-related finance flows, and discusses the key data and indicator gaps that need to be addressed to underpin effective monitoring of both the pressures on biodiversity and the actions (i.e. responses) being implemented. The report concludes with ten priority areas where G7 and other countries can prioritise their efforts.

Book excerpt: This book gathers contributions from scientists and industry representatives on achieving a sustainable bioeconomy. It also covers the social sciences, economics, business, education and the environmental sciences. There is an urgent need to optimise and maximise the use of biological resources, so that primary production and processing systems can generate more food, fibre and other bio-based products with less environmental impacts and lower greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, we need a “sustainable bioeconomy” – a term that encompasses the sustainable production of renewable resources from land, fisheries and aquaculture environments and their conversion into food, feed, fibre bio-based products and bio-energy, as well as related public goods. Despite the relevance of achieving a sustainable bioeconomy, there are very few publications in this field. Addressing that gap, this book illustrates how biological resources and ecosystems could be used in a more sustainable, efficient and integrated manner – in other words, how the principles of sustainable bioeconomy can be implemented in practice. Given its interdisciplinary nature, the field of sustainable bioeconomy offers a unique opportunity to address complex and interconnected challenges, while also promoting economic growth. It helps countries and societies to make a transition and to use resources more efficiently, and shows how to rely less on biological resources to satisfy industry demands and consumer needs. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and include many practice-based lessons learned, some of which are reproducible elsewhere. In closing, the book, prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), reiterates the need to promote a sustainable bioeconomy today.

Book excerpt: 'For at least two decades, scholars and practitioners have argued that international beneficiaries of ecosystem conservation should help pay for the supply of services from which they benefit. Yet these arguments have remained inchoate and have had little real impact on the ground. Bishop and Hill's excellent edited volume should help change that. The chapters are chock full of insights and guidance for scaling payments for environmental services to the international level. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-540/ Financial institutions have facilitated the expansion of business activities detrimental to biological diversity. However, the demand for investing in activities with positive impact on nature is rapidly rising, and the financial sector is increasingly urged to align their portfolios with biodiversity positive outcomes. This report provides a status of existing analytical tools and public and private strategies that ensure that public and private investments strengthen, not weaken, biodiversity. The report also looks closer at the approaches to biodiversity safeguards in the Nordic financial institutions Nefco (Nordic Environment Finance Corporation), NDF (Nordic Development Fund) and NIB (Nordic Investment Bank), and examines their methods to support biodiversity and nature through their financial activities.
