Bindung ist etwas, das uns alle betrifft, und jeden von uns in seinen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen beeinflusst. Die uns bekannteste, und wohl vertrauteste Bindung, ist die, die der Mensch meist von Geburt an erlebt: Die Bindung zu seiner Mutter. In diesem Text wird das Modell der Bindungstheorie mit Fokus auf der Mutter-Kind-Beziehung im Säuglingsalter vorgestellt. Der Begründer der Bindungstheorie, John Bowlby (2008), beschreibt „Bindung“ als angeborenes und enorm wichtiges Verhalten eines Menschen, welches klar abgegrenzt werden müsse von sexuellem Verlangen oder etwa dem Nahrungsbedürfnis. Gemeint ist folglich eine Beziehung nur auf der Gefühlsebene. Erst im späteren Verlauf des Lebens wird die meist langjährige Bindung zu einer Hauptperson oft durch partnerschaftliche Beziehungen ergänzt. Das Bindungsverhalten unterscheidet sich dahingehend von der Bindung, dass die Nähe suchende Person aktiv wird, um zur Bindungsfigur Kontakt aufzunehmen. Eine psychisch gesunde Person besitzt immer die Fähigkeit, sich an einen anderen Menschen zu binden. Die Bindungstheorie besagt außerdem, dass ein Kind während seiner Entwicklung immer mehr auf Entdeckungstouren geht, da es ein Interesse an seiner Umwelt entwickelt. Hierzu müssen die Eltern als sichere Basis dienen, zu der das Kind zu jeder Zeit zurückkehren kann und umsorgt wird. Die Modelle der Bindungstypen sind unterteilt in die Kategorien „sicher“, „unsicherambivalent“ und „unsicher-vermeidend“. Der unsicher-ambivalente sowie unsichervermeidende Bindungstyp werden durch Störungen charakterisiert, die bei den Kindern oftmals durch aggressives oder ängstliches Verhalten gekennzeichnet sind.
