Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated into English for the first time, Foundations of Modern Harmony, by composer and music theorist Karel Janec̆ek, addresses the analysis and composition of music not based on the tonal harmony that was common language until the early 20th century. Discussing this newer music requires a vocabulary in which all combinations of notes, or chords, can be named. Janec̆ek developed his theory of modern harmony over many years. In this book, he classifies chords according to their intervallic structure, their possible arrangements, and then based on their consonance and dissonance. His focus on what we hear leads to a discussion of “imaginary” pitches, those that are still heard after they are no longer sounding. Dealing with such issues as harmonizing a melody, resolving dissonant chords, and the formation and extinction of a sense of the tonic, Janeček’s work is an exciting complement to the theories of Schoenberg and Hindemith. His discussion of harmonic motion leads to the consideration of harmonic function, of establishing the tonic, of modulation, of atonal composition, and of static and kinetic conceptions of harmony. First published in 1965, Janeček’s concerns are of continuing importance to music theorists and composers.

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection of essays by a constitutionalist and a political sociologist examines how fragmented societies can be held together by appropriate and effective constitutional arrangements providing for bonds of democratic citizenship. Exploring the political order dilemmas of capitalist democracies, the authors address moral and institutional prerequisites on which the deepening of European integration depends. The desirability of such deepening is currently contested, with the membership of some states (and their compliance with the spirit of the Union's treaties) at stake. The authors do not consider the ‘renationalisation’ of Europe to be a feasible (and even less so a desirable) way out of Europe's current malaise. Yet whatever the way out, charting it calls not just for the vision and imagination of political elites but also for the intellectual efforts of social scientists. With this book, Preuß and Offe contribute to those efforts. Key Features: • original insights on the nature of the European crisis • analysis of how fragmented societies can be held together by appropriate constitutional arrangements • how state sovereignty and federal structures can be merged • account of the moral prerequisites and resources of democratic polities • dilemmas of political order under democratic capitalism

Book excerpt: Organosilicon Chemistry: 2 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of organosilicon chemistry. This book discusses the organosilicon substituents in anionic rearrangements as well as examines the production of tetrakis allene from a large number of aliphatic and aromatic polyhalogenated compounds. Organized into 14 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the use of organosilyl groups as migrating substituents. This text then examines the development in the chemistry of organosilicon cyclic compounds. Other chapters consider the evidence supporting the intermediacy of silylenes and the general picture of the chemistry of organosilylenes. This book discusses as well the two major approaches for the silylation of polyhalogenated compounds, including the direct reaction of polyhalogenated compounds and the metalation or halogen-metal exchange between the halogenated aromatic compounds and organolithium reagents. The final chapter deals with the importance of hydrosilation. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, scientists, and research workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook for German/English/German technical translators at all levels from student to professional covers the root terminologies of the spectrum of scientific and engineering fields. The work is designed to give technical translators direct insight into the main error sources occurring in their profession, especially those resulting from a poor understanding of the subject matter and the usage of particular terms to designate different concepts in different branches of technology. The style is easy to read and suitable for nonnative English speakers and translators with no engineering experience. Volume 1 presents a comprehensive systematic description of the basic concepts underlying all branches of technology: Electrical, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Materials, Science, Electronics, Nucleonics, Aeronautics, Computers, Automobiles, Plastics and other important fields. Volume 2 expands this terminology with the aid of a Technical Thesaurus and a set of structured bilingual dictionaries which draw attention to specific English/German errors, usage of technical vocabulary and to collocations of general vocabulary in engineering contexts. The two volumes combine 3 major areas: 1. Technical Translation, 2. General Linguistics and 3. Computational Lexicography, possibly indirectly marking the birth of a new discipline “Technical Linguistics”.The book is designed for practical as well as academic use, for translator trainers, practicing translators, applied linguists, and professional engineers and scientists working with English/German documentation.“There is so much material there that the books will not only be wanted by English/German/English translators, but the English basis on its own will be attractive to other language orientations involving English” Juan C. Sager (UMIST, Manchester)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon and silicon compounds have contributed decisively to the technical progress. Technical applications range from mass commodities to highly sophisticated special materials, from ceramics to polymers, from medicine to microelectronics. To keep pace with scientific and technical developments Germany and Austria have established national priority programs, strongly linked to each other as well as to some Swiss groups. At mid-term of the German program and the end of the first funding period of the Austrian program the results are summarized in this special edition of the journal Monatshefte für Chemie/Chemical Monthly, giving an excellent overview of the current chemical (and partly physical) acitivites in the joint Austrian/German/Swiss program. The contributions cover topical and interdisciplinary developments in the following areas: • new phenomena in compounds with Si-Si bonds: transitions between molecular compounds and solids, cyclosilanes, polysilanes, silicides, amorphous hydrogenated silicon, • novel silicon-oxygen systems: functionalized sol-gel compounds, spherosiloxanes, siloxene, • compounds with low- and high-coordinated silicon, • new spectroscopic and analytical techniques for the characterization of molecular and polymeric silicon compounds.

Book excerpt: The first supplement volume eomplements the 20 volumes on boron eompounds (Borverbin dungen) that have been published within the New Supplement Series (Erg.-Werk) of the eighth edition of the Gmelin Handbook by uniformly updating the literature eoverage to the end of 1977. However, the deseription in this supplement volume follows largely the Gmelin prineiple of the last position. The systems boron-hydrogen and boron-oxygen were presented in the first part, the systems boron-nitrogen and boron-halogens in the seeond part. This third and final part eontains the systems boron-ehaleogens and also earboranes as weil as a formula index for the three parts of the first supplement volume. Besides the earboranes many additional examples of earbon-eontaining or organie eompounds are ineluded in the presentation, partieularly in those eases where the earbon-free speeies are not known. As was the ease in the volumes of the New Supplement Series, a substantial part of this supplement volume is already presented in the English language. The IUPAC nomenelature is adhered to as mueh as possible, deviations are elearly indieated. This book was released on 2001-06-29 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Theory, together with the principles of special and general relativity, constitute a scientific revolution that has profoundly influenced the way in which we think about the universe and the fundamental forces that govern it. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is a definitive historical study of that scientific work and the human struggles that accompanied it from the beginning. Drawing upon such materials as the resources of the Archives for the History of Quantum Physics, the Niels Bohr Archives, and the archives and scientific correspondence of the principal quantum physicists, as well as Jagdish Mehra's personal discussions over many years with most of the architects of quantum theory, the authors have written a rigorous scientific history of quantum theory in a deeply human context. This multivolume work presents a rich account of an intellectual triumph: a unique analysis of the creative scientific process. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is science, history, and biography, all wrapped in the story of a great human enterprise. Its lessons will be an aid to those working in the sciences and humanities alike.||Comments by distinguished physicists on "The Historical Development of Quantum Theory":||"¿the most definitive work undertaken by anyone on this vast and most important development in the history of physics. Jagdish Mehra, trained in theoretical physics under Pauli, Heisenberg, and Dirac, pursued the vision of his youth to write about the historical and conceptual development of quantum theory in the 20th century¿This series of books on the HDQT has thus become the most authentic and permanent source of our knowledge of how quantum theory, its extensions and applications developed. My heartfelt congratulations."|-Hans A. Bethe, Nobel Laureate||"A thrilling and magnificent achievement!"|-Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, FRS, Nobel Laureate||"¿capture(s) precisely, accurately, and thoroughly the very essence and all the fundamental details of the theory, and that is a remarkable achievement¿I have greatly enjoyed reading these books and learned so many new things from them. This series of books will remain a permanent source of knowledge about the creation and development of quantum theory. Congratulations!"|-Paul A. Dirac, FRS, Nobel Laureate||"The wealth and accuracy of detail in 'The Historical Development of Quantum Theory' are breathtaking."|-Richard P. Feynman, Nobel Laureate
