Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of World War II, the British government determined the railway in East London would be vulnerable to heavy bombing by Germany. Children in the area were evacuated into the countryside to save their lives. Among the children sent to the West Country for the duration of the war were Tom and Billy Hedge. Their train journey to Cornwall was long and tiring. When the brothers finally arrived at the Applegate Farm in Netherton, where they were to be fostered, Billy stated, “I don’t like it here, Tom,” and that night, they silently cried themselves to sleep. The Applegates had two children: a son, Joshua, who at thirteen was a year older than Tom, and a daughter, Queenie, aged nine and a half, just six months younger than Billy. Tom found farm work to be hard and tedious, while Billy relished looking after the chickens, and later, the horses. Billy and Queenie bonded right from the start and became inseparable. They shared numerous adventures in the small village, including meeting a local ghost and helping an army deserter. After the war, and just before Christmas 1949, the two married.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Oregon without Jesse Applegate would be like Exodus without Moses. Like Moses, Jesse led pioneers through the wilderness across the Oregon Trail in 1843. Like Moses, he was a law-giver, and like Moses, when proper provocation occurred, he sometimes threw down the tablets.Jesse Applegate, A Dialogue with Destinygives a comprehensive historical perspective to the life of this interesting, complicated man who played a major role in the formation of Oregon. Throughout his amazing life, he led the 'cow column' of '43 west to Oregon, wrote the constitution of '45, played a major role in the solving of the Cayuse War, led the expedition to find a new southern route in'46, and fought to keep Oregon free of slavery. But perhaps even more important was the moral compass he provided for the emerging Oregon society. Through his letters to editors of newspapers and to prominent political figures, he provided comment, council, criticism, and loyal opposition to those in power. His opinions were sought by local, state and federal leaders, as well as the historians of the day.
Download or read book The Cameo written by Geri Livelli and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inheritance of an antique cameo brooch, the discovery of her great grandmothers memoirs, and a time-capsule filled with antique furnishings all conspire to change Grace Winthrops life. Haunting secrets and a bittersweet love story were destined to spend eternity inside the memoirs. Grace breathes life back into them with her book, The Cameo. In 1882, Graces great grandmother Sofia Stewart began chronicling her life and love for Billy Ryan. Love flourished in the beautiful Hudson Valley, but their plans to marry were abruptly interrupted. Circumstance enters to keep their lives entwined. Hudson Valley was home to the brickmaking industry and the immigrants who labored there. There were contrasts: great wealth, abject poverty, Saratoga horse racing, child labor, the Womens Suffrage Movement, and social mores to cover all that was offensive. World War I took the world by surprise, ushering in a time of sorrow and change. The human spirit survives while the ever present cameo symbolizes the love between Sofia and Billy.

Book Synopsis The Modoc War by : Robert Aquinas McNally
Download or read book The Modoc War written by Robert Aquinas McNally and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold, rainy dawn in late November 1872, Lieutenant Frazier Boutelle and a Modoc Indian nicknamed Scarface Charley leveled firearms at each other. Their duel triggered a war that capped a decades-long genocidal attack that was emblematic of the United States’ conquest of Native America’s peoples and lands. Robert Aquinas McNally tells the wrenching story of the Modoc War of 1872–73, one of the nation’s costliest campaigns against North American Indigenous peoples, in which the army placed nearly one thousand soldiers in the field against some fifty-five Modoc fighters. Although little known today, the Modoc War dominated national headlines for an entire year. Fought in south-central Oregon and northeastern California, the war settled into a siege in the desolate Lava Beds and climaxed the decades-long effort to dispossess and destroy the Modocs. The war did not end with the last shot fired, however. For the first and only time in U.S. history, Native fighters were tried and hanged for war crimes. The surviving Modocs were packed into cattle cars and shipped from Fort Klamath to the corrupt, disease-ridden Quapaw reservation in Oklahoma, where they found peace even more lethal than war. The Modoc War tells the forgotten story of a violent and bloody Gilded Age campaign at a time when the federal government boasted officially of a “peace policy” toward Indigenous nations. This compelling history illuminates a dark corner in our country’s past.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestseller Katherine Applegate, a singular middle-grade novel about a girl who risks everything to help a handmade creature who comes to life. The earth is old and we are not, and that is all you must remember . . . Eleven-year-old Willodeen adores creatures of all kinds, but her favorites are the most unlovable beasts in the land: strange beasts known as “screechers.” The villagers of Perchance call them pests, even monsters, but Willodeen believes the animals serve a vital role in the complicated web of nature. Lately, though, nature has seemed angry indeed. Perchance has been cursed with fires and mudslides, droughts and fevers, and even the annual migration of hummingbears, a source of local pride and income, has dwindled. For as long as anyone can remember, the tiny animals have overwintered in shimmering bubble nests perched atop blue willow trees, drawing tourists from far and wide. This year, however, not a single hummingbear has returned to Perchance, and no one knows why. When a handmade birthday gift brings unexpected magic to Willodeen and her new friend, Connor, she’s determined to speak up for the animals she loves, and perhaps even uncover the answer to the mystery of the missing hummingbears. A timely and timeless tale about our fragile earth, and one girl’s fierce determination to make a difference.
