Book excerpt: This invaluable study of turn-of-the-century German thought and literature examines the causes of «Verbildung» as revealed in the cultural, social and political climate of Wilhelminian Germany. It traces the early philosophic admonitions of Nietzsche and Langbehn, how they gave rise to the Verbildungsroman and Schulliteratur and analyzes the life and prose fiction works of Otto Julius Bierbaum, the only German author who made the issue of Verbildung the focal point of his life and work.

Book Synopsis The Role of the Trial in the School Prose of the Weimar Republic by : Roy L. Ackerman
Download or read book The Role of the Trial in the School Prose of the Weimar Republic written by Roy L. Ackerman and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1982 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods as a frame of reference, this invaluable study of the Schulliteratur composed during the Weimar Republic presents a judicious analysis of school prose written by Hermann Sudermann, Frank Thiess, Klaus Mann and others. More importantly, it clearly illuminates social, cultural and political values in which the German people have traditionally placed stock and provides trenchant insight into the kaleidoscopic nature of the Weimar Republic and its effect on these beliefs. It proves convincingly that the school prose of the Weimar Republic is a mirror of a most fascinating era in German history, and, as such, deserves more than oblivion.

Book excerpt: This study is concerned with the social and political awareness apparent in the works of Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll. In particular, the authors' critical stance has been examined and, in some instances, the reaction of West German society to this criticism. Behind Böll's censure there is evident an intention to alert his fellow citizens to the prevailing social inequities, to awaken a deeper sense of democratic values, and, ultimately, to create a more equitable and human society.

Download or read book The Humorous and Grotesque Elements in Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz written by Henrietta S. Schoonover and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1977 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Döblin manipulates language to set up the laughter of incongruity. The paradox of linguistic anarchy both attacks and defends the world order. Satire and irony expose weaknesses and faults in the world order; they attack both general human frailty and the specific political failings of the Germans and the Weimar Republic. Picaresque elements and the picaro tradition mock society, describe and criticize «Biberkopf». Grotesque incongruities, developed in the «dunkel»-motif, disclose a world order hostile to man. Consideration of his literary theories determine Döblin's humor as a serious element which allows for both perceiving incongruities in the world order and taking delight in its grand totality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first epistemologic approach to Wieland. The author's theory of knowledge is analyzed and applied to several novels by way of explaining their individual structure and style. At the same time this innovative approach affords a reassessment of the author's so-called «Urphänomen der Schwärmerei». The epistemological method represents a new way of viewing literature in general and is equally applicable to prose or verse.

Book Synopsis Images of Transience in the Poems and Ballads of Friedrich Schiller by : Ronald L. Crawford
Download or read book Images of Transience in the Poems and Ballads of Friedrich Schiller written by Ronald L. Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study attempts to identify and analyze the images of transience in Schiller's poetic work. In the early poems a major series of images of transience reveals his baroque heritage. The surprising aspect of the poems which follow the historical studies and the engrossment in Kant is that the same images of transience remain. The persistent images of transience make it clear that Schiller was far from being an ivory tower idealist, rather he was a realist who perceived the grim visage of life.
