Book Synopsis Women’s Work in Britain and France by : Abigail Gregory
Download or read book Women’s Work in Britain and France written by Abigail Gregory and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-01-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Work in Britain and France is a ground-breaking retheorization of what constitutes 'progress' in gender relations. The book shows that French women, although having more full-time and continuous careers and greater social policy support, retain as great a responsibility for unpaid domestic and caring work as their British counterparts. It replaces the conventional focus upon encouraging women's increased insertion into employment as the principal strategy for achieving progress in gender relations with a new focus on changing men's work patterns.

Download or read book Women and Recession (Routledge Revivals) written by Jill Rubery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book compiles a collection of works investigating the impact of recession on women's employment. The authors argue that the most important explanation of differences in women's experience between the countries is the form of labour market regulation and organisation. They point out that current changes in these forms of regulation, and not displacement of female labour, pose the main threat to any gains that women have made in the labour market in the post- World War II period.

Book excerpt: This anthology examines the effects of economic orthodoxy on the French left. A decade after the governing left relinquished plans to 'transform society', French social actors have indeed changed. They have adapted to economic orthodoxy and to a new political mainstream. Various essays examine the political impact of economic forces. They explore the relationships between left parties and organized labour. The book also looks at new forms of political mobilization around gender, immigration, and environmental issues.

Download or read book Femmes Et L'emploi written by Kathleen Ann Lahey and published by Condition féminine Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes how Canadian fiscal policy reinforces the many social, economic and legal barriers women face when they try to gain equal access to full-time work with equal pay. It examines basic structural features of the tax and social assistance system for their tendency to place pressure on women to choose unpaid or poorly paid irregular work to optimize the well-being of their families. These include provisions that treat the adult couple as the basic unit of fiscal policy, joint income limits on the child tax benefit, and the Goods and Services Tax credit. The report outlines structural proposals to remove these barriers and assesses the proposals for their probable impact on women who are further disadvantaged by their race or ethnic origin, marital status, sexuality or disability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the wealth of empirical research currently available on the interrelationships of gender and labor, we still know comparatively little about the forms of classification and categorization that have helped shape these social phenomena over time. Categories in Context seeks to enrich our understanding of how cognitive categories such as status, law, and rights have been produced, comprehended, appropriated, and eventually transformed by relevant actors. By focusing on specific developments in France and Germany through a transnational lens, this volume produces insights that can be applied to a wide variety of political, social, and historical contexts.

Book Synopsis French Women in Politics: Writing Power by : Raylene L. Ramsay
Download or read book French Women in Politics: Writing Power written by Raylene L. Ramsay and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more women in France have entered political life than ever before, the fact remains that there are fewer women representatives in the French parliament than there were after the Second World War. In a new and original approach, the author presents an overview and analysis of the emerging body of text by or on women who have held high political office in France. The argument is that writing about women and politics has not just described or reflected women's slow but now substantial entry into political life; it has played a major part in shaping the parity debate and its outcomes. Interviews with political women, such as Huguette Bouchardeau, Simone Veil or Edith Cresson, inserted in the text, demonstrate the emergence and circulation of a new common discourse focused on the issue of whether women in politics make or should make a difference. A close reading of the various texts examined in this book and their connection to new public counter-discourses in France suggest that a re-writing of power is indeed occurring.
