Book excerpt: Feminist Research: Prospect and Retrospect offers a thorough look at the problems of women today, suggesting that society is encountering a period of strong reaction to the feminist movement of the late sixties and early seventies. Marguerite Anderson argues that only the "dynamite of research" will allow construction of a positive route forward.

Book Synopsis Sponsorship-- for Better Or for Worse by : Andrée Côté
Download or read book Sponsorship-- for Better Or for Worse written by Andrée Côté and published by Status of Women. This book was released on 2001 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sponsorship is a procedure that allows people to immigrate to Canada in order to join their families without having to satisfy the usual selection criteria. This report examines the impact of sponsorship on immigrant women using documentary research and qualitative research based on life stories. Part 1 describes that methodology and presents a brief history of immigration & sponsorship policies in Canada. Part 2 presents & discusses life stories revealed in in-depth interviews with 16 Francophone immigrant women in Ontario who were sponsored by their husbands. The stories reveal the magnitude & complexity of the problems they face as immigrant women and how conjugal sponsorship contributes to their disadvantaged status. Part 3 reviews the rights of immigrant women under the current sponsorship regime and the impact of spousal sponsorship on those rights. The final part begins by discussing reforms made in other jurisdictions in order to find promising avenues for reform, then examines recent federal proposals in its January 1999 policy statement on new directions for immigration policy & legislation. Two policy reform options are then considered: improving the current sponsorship regime according to the needs of women sponsored by their husbands; and eliminating mandatory sponsorship in cases of family reunification between spouses. The appendix includes an interview guide.
Book Synopsis Organizing Women by : Guillaume, Cécile
Download or read book Organizing Women written by Guillaume, Cécile and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the representation of women and their interests in the world of work across four trade unions in France and the UK. Drawing on case studies of the careers of 100 activists and a longitudinal study of the trade unions' struggle for equal pay in the UK, it unveils the social, organizational, and political conditions that contribute to the reproduction of gender inequalities or, on the contrary, allow the promotion of equality. Guillaume’s nuanced evaluation is a call to redefine the role of trade unions in the delivering of gender equality, contributing to broader debates on the effectiveness of equality policies and the enforcement of equality legislation.

Book Synopsis Women, Work, and Activism by : Eloisa Betti
Download or read book Women, Work, and Activism written by Eloisa Betti and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteen critical and well-documented chapters of Women, Work and Activism examine women’s labor struggle from late nineteenth-century Portuguese mutual societies to Yugoslav peasant women’s work in the 1930s, and from the Catalan labor movement under the Franco dictatorship to workplace democracy in the United States. The authors portray women's labor activism in a wide variety of contexts. This includes spontaneous resistance to masculinist trade unionism, the feminist engagement of women workers, the activism of communist wives of workers, and female long-distance migration, among others. The chapters address the gendered involvement of working people in multiple and often precarious and unstable labor relations and in unpaid labor, as well as the role of the state and other institutions in shaping the history of women’s labor. The book is an innovative contribution to both the new labor history and feminist history. It fully integrates the conceptual advances made by gender historians in the study of labor activism, driving home critiques of Eurocentric historiographies of labor to Europe while simultaneously contributing to an inclusive history of women’s labor-related activism wherever to be found. Examining women’s activism in male-dominated movements and institutions, and in women’s networks and organizations, the authors make a case for a new direction in gender history.
