Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told in the alternating voices of Cage, Harper, and their parents, Cages Bend is the story of a family damaged by tragedy and unfulfilled dreams and renewed by the unshakable bonds of love. Cage, Nick, and Harper appear to be the archetypal sons of the ideal American family of the 1960s and 70s. The firstborn, Cage, is the golden boystar athlete and scholar, adventurous, handsome, and preternaturally popular; Nick is the quiet, late-blooming middle son; and Harper, 10 years younger, chases after his older siblings, trying not to be left out. With the tragic death of Nick in the 1980s, the breakdown of the family begins. Cages guilt triggers incipient mental illness and the next two decades find him swinging between mania and depression, between grim institutions and comebacks. Harper, who has achieved early success on Wall Street, is torn between wanting to help his brother and seeking escape from his ghosts in an endless stream of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Matters addresses a cluster of related questions that arise from the conflict of interests between rights based on sex and rights based on gender identity. Some of these questions are theoretical, including: who has the more ambitious vision for women's liberation, gender-critical feminists or proponents of gender identity? How does each understand what gender is? What are the arguments for the refrain that 'trans women are women!', and do they succeed? Other questions taken up in the book are more applied to specific issues in law and policy including: should there be a right to exclude people who are biologically male from women-only spaces? How do the interests of all stakeholders to bathrooms, in particular, trade off when it comes to moving from sex to gender identity as the basis for self-inclusion? If we think about types of transition, or gatekeeping requirements on transition, as providing assurance to women who are asked to accept the opening up of women-only spaces to transwomen, are any such assurances sufficient? Is 'TERF' a slur, as some radical and gender-critical feminists have claimed? And finally, is gender-critical speech 'hate speech', as it has been classified by some social media platforms, or at least harmful speech? Holly Lawford-Smith discusses these issues in a series of essays, all but one of them previously unpublished. She takes an analytic philosophical approach to these issues, drawing on ideas from political philosophy, philosophy of biology, and philosophy of language, as well as second-wave feminist theory and empirical literature, to defend a gender-critical position in response to all of these questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chrystal Sharp's first two books, If The Cat Fits and Dog In My Footsteps, earned her an enthusiastic following - and it continues to grow. In this, her third book, the irrepressible vet's wife brings us yet more stories of her life with her husband and son in a coastal town in the Eastern Cape. In a home where domestic animals and wildlife abound, we once again encounter Beau, the wolf lookalike, who bites first and asks questions afterwards. I had to be constantly on the alert for visitors who behaved in a manner that Beau could interpret as suspicious. And on a bad day, that could be someone who coughed or sneezed once too often. 'My God, Beau, the poor woman only sneezed three times. She suffers from hayfever.' 'She was building up to something.' 'She was building up to another sneeze!' Then there's Singe, the cat who survived a shack fire; Gooseberry, a seagull who thinks a duck is his mother; penguins, a fish eagle, and the odd snake or two. Acutely observant, Sharp's writing is alive with her humour and compassion for all living creatures. She reaches into the hearts and minds of her readers, drawing them into her life. And throughout it all, one cannot help but admire her stoical efforts to maintain an air of normality - often in the face of daunting odds.

Book excerpt: Pete the Vet has seen it all – whether Apollo the hamster, Nero the cat, Samson the rabbit or Ned the terrier, he has come across a whole host of cases that aren't in the textbook. With nearly twenty-five years at a veterinary clinic combined with ten years spent on the Telegraph answering reader's questions and a weekly spot on Irish breakfast TV he has dealt with sick pets from the big to the small. Whether that is a giant tortoise or a budgie, there is no case too extraordinary for Pete. Drawing on his experience from his own veterinary practice Pete has a wealth of stories – heart-warming as well as heartbreaking – that are told with a witty and engaging turn of phrase. Pet Subjects is a collection of case studies where the reader works beside Pete to try and cure his patients. Once solved, Pete helpfully provides further Q&As to cover a wider range of ailments related to the main story. A captivating and essential read for anyone who cares for a pet of their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 36, Caroline Knapp, author of the acclaimed bestseller Drinking:A Love Story, found herself confronted with a monumental task: redefining her world. She had faced the loss of both her parents, given up a twenty-year relationship with alcohol, and, as she writes, "I was wandering around in a haze of uncertainty, blinking up at the biggest questions: Who am I without parents and without alcohol? How to form attachments, and where to find comfort, in the face of such daunting vulnerability?" An answer materialized in the most unlikely form: that of a dog. Eighteen months to the day after she quit drinking, Knapp stumbled upon an eight-week-old puppy at a local animal shelter, took her home, and named her Lucille. Now two years old, Lucille has become a central force in Knapp's life: "In her," she writes, "I have found solace, joy, a bridge to the world." Caroline Knapp has been celebrated as much for her fresh insight into emotional and psychological issues as she has been for her gifts as a writer. In Pack of Two, she brings the same perception and talent to bear on the rich, complicated terrain of human-animal relationships. In addition to mining her own experience with Lucille, Knapp speaks to a wide variety of dog people--from animal behaviorists and psychologists to other owners whose dogs have deeply affected their lives--about this emotionally complex, sometimes daunting, often profoundly healing alliance. Throughout, she explores the shift in canine roles from working partners to intimate companions and looks, too, at how this new kinship, this wordless bond, becomes a template for what we most desire ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You, This Is Me. Over. Charts former Green Beret, Clinton Beaudel Dooley’s journey from elite soldier and seasoned veteran of both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, to his struggles with post traumatic stress disorder after several tours of duty, a near fatal breakdown, and through his recovery. Clint’s works show a fractured person who brought back together by the love of his exceptionally strong wife, fellow brothers in arms, forgiving family, fur-babies, and rediscovered connection to the world outside himself. After years of cycling in and out of war zones, of trying to switch back and forth between being a soldier in the thick of war and being a loving husband and everyday person at home, he understands why veterans sometimes get stuck in between the competing inner/outer worlds of God, Family, and Country which hinder many war veterans from fully fitting back into a society they have all fought to protect. You, This is Me. Over, offers veterans, their loved ones, and health care professionals an insight into what is going on inside the veterans’ hearts and heads with the hope of increasing understanding, and opening up conversations that will save lives. Together all the works present the many facets of a person’s experience with PTSD. If you read one, or all of them, and it speaks to you or allows you to show a loved one what you are experiencing, then YOU, THIS IS ME. OVER. has been worth writing.
